Education Alum Leader in South Florida Private School Education, Opens Virtual School


Brent Goldman, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, is the co-founder and CEO of Xceed Preparatory Academy, which currently has four locations in South Florida (Kendall, Weston, Coral Springs, and Daytona Beach). In July 2020, Xceed opened its 5th school, a virtual school called Xceed Anywhere.

Goldman has been a leader in private school education in South Florida since 1996. He was the co-founder and Head of School at The Sagemont School in Weston for 21 years. Under his leadership, Sagemont grew to over 820. Additionally, he co-founded The University of Miami Online High School and Smart Horizons Career Online Education (www.shcoe.org).  The University of Miami Online High School was the first Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accredited private online high school. It was sold to Kaplan in 2007.  Smart Horizons Career Online Education is geared towards the 30mm+ adult high school dropouts in the United States and is the official high school of McDonalds.

Goldman earned his M.S. in 1994 and his Ed.D. in 1997 from the Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice.

Innovation summit features NSU’s Dr. Harry Moon

Dr. Harry K. Moon, Nova Southeastern University’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, will be among a distinguished panel discussing the challenges that COVID-19 has created for education. “Education in a Pandemic: From Crisis Teaching to Distance Learning,” a virtual event hosted by national business law firm Greenspoon Marder, will bring together leaders of top companies to share their perspectives across industry lines. The panel discussion will be on Wednesday, September 30, from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Joining Dr. Moon in this panel discussion will be Denise J. Ganz, a partner with Greenspoon Marder; Antonio L. Roca, director at Academica Virtual Education; John Edelson, Founder and President of Time4Learning; and Richard Moreno, President of BH Services, Building Hope.

Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine Students Dominate at FMA Poster Symposium

Three Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine students— Class of 2020 alumna Gabriela Lins, D.O.; OMS-III Collin Tacy; and OMS-IV Jason D. Vadhan—earned awards at the David A. Paulus, M.D., Poster Symposium held during the virtual Florida Medical Association (FMA) 2020 Annual Meeting during July 31–August 2. Below are the KPCOM winners and their respective categories.

Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumna to Work on Greys Anatomy

 

Carisa Champion, D.O., J.D., M.P.H. (‘16), is working in Los Angeles, California on the long-running TV show Grey’s Anatomy as a medical adviser and a surgical communications fellow. She will help accurately portray surgical procedures and guide the direction of surgical storylines as the show will take another dramatic turn when its 17th season premieres—focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic as the season’s overarching plot point. Additionally, Champion taught her first course as an adjunct professor—Professional Ethics and Health Law—for the KPCOM’s Master of Science in Medical Education program. Champion also serves on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners’ COMLEX PE Committee.

Nova Southeastern University Provost and Executive VP for Academic Affairs Ronald J. Chenail, Ph.D. is pleased to announce that starting August 17, 2020, nominations will be accepted for the annual Provost’s Research and Scholarship Award. The deadline to submit a nomination or to self-nominate is 5:00 p.m., EDT, September 11, 2020.

The purpose of the award is to recognize an NSU faculty member who has demonstrated significant achievement in support of NSU’s mission to foster scholarship, intellectual inquiry, and academic excellence. Research and scholarship are two of NSU’s core values, and excellence in these areas enhances education, patient care, and public service, and develops superior scholarship. This annual award recognizes distinguished accomplishments in the pursuit of research and scholarly activities across the academic disciplines.  The winner of the Provost’s Research and Scholarship Award will be announced in October 2020.

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Increases Post-9/11 GI Bill® Benefit Levels

NSU

Current and prospective NSU students eligible for education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) may see an increase in benefits effective August 1, 2020. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pays Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits at different rates (known as benefit levels) based on length of service. Effective August 1, 2020, rates will change as follows:

  • 40% benefit level will be eliminated
  • Students who were previously eligible for 40% are now eligible for 50%
  • Students who were previously eligible for 50% are now eligible for 60%

After the change goes into effect, veterans may use the GI Bill® Comparison Tool to determine the entitlement they can receive for their education, training, and housing. For more information, please view the VA’s Consolidation of Benefit Level Postcard or visit the financial aid website.

Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Healthcare Sciences Department of Speech-Language Pathology: A Voice for the Non-Traditional Podcast

Two recent M.S.-SLP graduates, Kelly Thompson and Amber Banks, both of Kentucky, were recently interviewed on Sunshine Speechie podcast, about their experience as non-traditional students while obtaining their M.S.-Speech-Language Pathology degree from NSU’s Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Healthcare Sciences. They discussed their personal experiences of working in the field of speech-language pathology while going to school online and answered questions about their experiences and provided advice to people who are pursuing a degree in speech-language pathology.

“A Voice for the Nontraditional Student” by Sunshine Speechie was released on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, on all podcast platforms.

Kelly and Amber also presented in February at the 2020 Kentucky Speech-Language Hearing Association on “Perspectives on Preprofessional Employment and Non-traditional Graduate Programs”.

NSU Counseling Professor Publishes First Book

A presentation at the American Counseling Association in 2017 has grown into the first book published by Melanie Iarussi, Ph.D., an associate professor in the College of Psychology’s Department of Counseling. Integrating Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Clinical Practice covers in detail two types of therapy: motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT).

“My dissertation for my doctoral program was on this same topic, so it’s been a thread of my work since I’ve started,” she said.

Iarussi describes MI as a guided approach that meets the client where they are when they aren’t ready for change, and it emphasizes compassion, empathy, and nonjudgement. Separately, CBT is an umbrella of approaches that identifies a client’s core beliefs and can help with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The book covers how the two therapies are complementary to each other.
