NSU Men’s Soccer Selected as a 2018-19 College Team Academic Award

The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer program has been recognized as a 2018-19 College Team Academic Award recipient, announced by United Soccer Coaches.

The award, which dates back to 1996, honors men’s and women’s collegiate soccer programs that performed at a high level in the classroom during the academic year by maintaining at least a 3.0 cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

During 2018-19, the Sharks posted a combined GPA of 3.37, including the highest marks of any of NSU’s seven men’s teams in each of the fall and winter semesters.

“Another opportunity to brag on a great group of student-athletes,” said head coach Matt Watts. “I’m incredibly proud! The boys smashed it out of the park in the 2018-19 season both on and off the pitch. It’s brilliant to see such success in our program, and I know these guys are going to go on to do HUGE things!”

The Sharks were one of eight men’s teams from the Sunshine State Conference to be acknowledged, boasting the third-highest GPA of the select group. In all, a total of 347 men’s programs across all divisions were named to the award list.

Criminal Justice Faculty Member Article on 9/11 Accepted into the Journal of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress

Grace Telesco, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, authored an article titled, Never Forget, Sometimes Forgotten, Often Haunted, which was accepted into the Fall Edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. Dr. Telesco’s article focuses on the trauma experienced by a first responder during 9/11.

Dr. Telesco recalls, “as a 9/11 First Responder in New York City, the images, sounds, and smells of Ground Zero are etched in my mind. Having spent eighteen months escorting family members to the place where their loved ones had last been seen alive is a memory of a tragic time that is impossible for me to forget. I wrote this article in order to explore how the effects of this traumatic event still impacts those of us who responded 18 years later.  I know that despite the fact that many of our students were toddlers at the time, the memory of this event and the amazing recovery work that was conducted should never be forgotten.”
