CAHSS Graduate Conducts Workshop in Guinea on Conflict, Negotiation, and Mediation

Onur Yuksel Ph.D.

Onur Yuksel, Ph.D., doctoral graduate in Conflict Analysis and Resolution in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), conducted a four-day workshop in Guinea on Conflict, Negotiation, and Mediation. Participants were government officials, including Mohamed Said Fofana, former president of Guinea and currently the head of the Mediation Institute of Guinea.

Yuksel is the Project Development Coordinator at TOBB University of Economics and Technology, Conflict Resolution Center in Ankara, Turkey. In addition to his doctoral degree from NSU, he holds a master’s degree in International Relations from Northeastern University.

CAHSS hosts the first of three El Cafecito Spanish Conversation Table of the Fall Term

The Department of Literature and Modern Languages (DLML) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) hosted the first of three El Cafecito Spanish Conversation Table of the semester on September 9, 2019. Over forty students, most of whom are enrolled in Spanish courses, participated in the event. Three Spanish faculty members, Yvette Fuentes, Ph.D., Grace Helguero-Balcells, Ph.D., and Carolina Zarate, Ph.D., served as moderators. During the hour, students had the opportunity to chat in Spanish about various topics of interest in a relaxed atmosphere. Participants enjoyed Cuban pastries and Colombian coffee. The department will host two more El Cafecito events this semester, on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and again on Friday, November 15, 2019 from 12-1 p.m. Both events will be held on the second floor of the U.C.  El Cafecito is open to all members of our community who wish to practice their Spanish. All levels are welcome.

CAHSS Faculty Presents at the Fourteenth International Conference on the Arts in Society in Portugal

Elena Bastidas, Ph.D., faculty in the Depart of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on The Arts and Society in Portugal. The conference was held at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. Her co-presenter was her daughter, Victoria Luzuriaga, a student studying art and psychology at The New School in NYC.

Bastidas and Luzuriaga presented their work on “Art as a Way of Facilitating Social Change Processes.” The presentation focused on Social Polygraphy, a methodology used to facilitate social processes. Using case studies from Bastidas’ work on youth peacebuilding efforts in Colombia, Luzuriaga dissected the methodology using arguments from the arts and psychology that helped the audience get a better understanding of the effectiveness of this methodology for conflict resolution efforts that depend on social change.

Bastidas’ research and teaching interests include quantitative methodology, conflict and international development, environmental conflict, and gender analysis in international development. She is also the director of the M.S. and Graduate Certificates in DCRS.

Social Justice Roundtable featuring CAHSS Alum on “Reflective Introspection about Social Justice”, Sept. 21

The Social Justice Roundtable (SJR) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites you to participate in the next roundtable on Saturday, September 21 from 4:30-5:45 pm in Maltz, Room 2050. Our special guest will be Dilip Kulkarni, Ph.D., Ed.D. Kulkarni is a doctoral graduate of the conflict analysis and resolution program in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies in CAHSS. Kulkarni will share his thoughts on the important topic of “Reflective Introspection about Social Justice,” and will invite participants to share their reflections.

The SJR provides a means to examine and discuss topics related to human rights and social justice. The SJR is collaborating with Community Resolution Services to host an Inclusion dialogue to consider, “Reflective Introspection about Social Justice.” The understanding of social justice is challenging, and invites us to reflective introspection by the individual. What does social mean to you? How has your understanding evolved? How does your education and our field weave social justice into the fabric of our theories, research, and practice?

In addition to his degree from NSU, Kulkarni recently completed an Ed.D. at Northeastern University. His other degrees include his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from University of Bombay, India, an M.S. in civil engineering from Clarkson College of Technology (now Clarkson University), and an M.S. in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.

CAHSS Invites you to Sebastián Lelio’s Una Mujer Fantástica (A Fantastic Woman), Sept. 18

The Department of Literature and Modern Languages (DLML) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and First Year Experience Program are pleased to present the Annual Film Series: The Reel. This film series offers NSU students, faculty, and other members of the university and local community curated film screenings three times per fall and winter on campus. Food and drinks are provided, and each night is free of charge.

Yvette Fuentes, Ph.D., faculty in DLML will facilitate discussion of Sebastián Lelio’s Una Mujer Fantástica (A Fantastic Woman), on Wednesday, September 18, from 6:00-9:00pm in the Mailman-Hollywood Auditorium, 2nd floor.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (2017) and directed by Sebastián Lelio, one of Chile’s most successful directors and screenwriters, Una Mujer Fantástica focuses on the life of a transgender woman, Marina (Daniela Vega), who must overcome rejection and harassment after the unexpected and sudden death of her older lover, Orlando (Francisco Reyes). Set in modern-day Chile, the movie presents viewers with the changes taking place in a country once plagued by a right-wing dictatorship, and where laws protecting LGBTQ have only been recently passed. Una Mujer Fantástica calls on viewers to reflect on love, loss, and hope even in the direst of circumstances. The film will be shown in Spanish with English captions.

This film if part of NSU’s celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Come join us as we explore Hispanic and Latin heritage and culture through film!

CAHSS’ Department of Literature and Modern Languages Hosted Welcome Luncheon

The Department of Literature and Modern Languages (DLML) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) hosted the “Hi, You” Haiku: Welcome Luncheon to greet all returning and incoming students in English, Spanish, Medical Humanities, Humanities, Gender Studies, Film, and Folklore & Mythology. To get things started, students and professors crafted personal haikus to introduce themselves and shared a little about books they found most influential. DLML backpacks and books from professors were given away as raffle prizes. This event brought DLML majors and minors together to appreciate literature and the languages. Look out for our next Literature and Language Luncheon. On November 1, the Department will host “The Mad Tea Party” from 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm at Mailman Hollywood room 332, for all those majoring, minoring, or interested in literature and the languages. We look forward to you joining us for games, giveaways, and food!

CAHSS Faculty and Students Present Guns, Grief, and Family Therapy: After School Shootings at AAMFT Conference in Austin, TX

Anne Rambo, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Family Therapy (DFT) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), and 3 DFT students conducted an Institute at the 2019 American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Conference. The Institute was entitled, “Guns, Grief, and Family Therapy: After School Shootings.” The conference was held in Austin, TX.  The three students included Alexandra Alfaro, Elizabeth Jarquin, and Porshia Cunningham.

Rambo also directs DFT’s master’s and graduate certificate programs and has extensive experience working with at-risk children and families. She has written three books for professionals, and one for parents, as well as numerous book chapters and articles and presents internationally on social justice and family therapy.
