As a lead-up to June Pride Month and the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall, this one-day symposium with local and national LGBTQ artists, curators and activists will highlight issues in the LGBTQ+ art community.

Speakers include: Artists Roberto Juarez, Kia LaBeija, Naima Green, Roberto Navarrete, GeoVanna Gonzalez and Najja Moon; Alex Fiahlo, programs director Visual AIDS, Requel Lopes, director of the World AIDS Museum and Education Center. Performances by artists Rosemarie Romero, Roberto Navarrete and the Fort Lauderdale’s Gay Men’s Chorus.

Paint the Universe Art Exhibit Featured at the Alvin Sherman Library

The Gold Coast Watercolor Society is the premier watercolor club in South Florida, and several members have been nationally recognized for their work. The  “Painting the Universe” exhibit coincides with the Alvin Sherman Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories.”The exhibit is FREE and open to the public from Saturday, May 4 – Saturday, July 13, 2019

Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing to Host Mental Health Forum

The Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing in conjunction with NAMI Broward will host a mental health community forum discussion to discuss the current state of mental health care in Broward county.  The forum aims to foster discussion to identify risks and protective factors that affect mental health. We will explore solutions to recovery and resilience in substance dependence, homelessness, crime and mental illness across the lifespan.  

Panelist include renowned community and academic leaders in mental health:  Judge Lerner-Wren of the 17th Circuit Court, Scott Poland, Ed.D., Gayle Giese, Jose A. Rey, Pharm.D. and Sgt. Rafailovic.

Halmos Undergraduate Wins Outstanding Chemistry Graduating Senior Award

This April, Halmos College Chemistry student Sabrina Vázquez Brenzini received the award for Outstanding Chemistry Graduating Senior at the South Florida American Chemical Society (So-FLACS) Awards Ceremony and Banquet. Held at Florida International University, the award recognizes graduating undergraduate students who have demonstrated the highest level of academic excellence in the field of chemistry.

When informed of her win, Sabrina said, “I feel honored about receiving this award… [This award] motivates me to keep doing better, to always give my best…”

Also in attendance at the ceremony was faculty member Richard H. Perry, Ph.D. of the Halmos College Department of Chemistry and Physics.

So-FLACS is the south Florida branch of the American Chemical Society. Founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress, the American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society. Their mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people.

Sharks Selected as No.2 Seed in NCAA South Super Regional

To the surprise of very few, the Nova Southeastern women’s golf team will once again have a chance to compete for a national championship after being picked as the No. 2 seed to come out of the south region on Monday. The nation’s third-ranked program is among the 48 teams chosen to participate in super regional play as part of the 2019 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships, with the NCAA South Super Regional set to tee off Monday, May 6 at the Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tenn. FULL RELEASE

Program-Best No.3 National Ranking

The 2019 Nova Southeastern Sharks women’s tennis squad has made some historic moves this season in several facets under third-year head coach Doug Neagle – from delivering the best season since 2007, to a 12-win turnaround from 2018, to the first victory over Barry in 10 seasons and a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Championship final appearance. However, the Sharks aren’t done just yet and the effort has been recognized with a program-best No. 3 national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). FULL RELEASE

NSU Headed to Back to Regionals

In his first full season as head coach, Joey Marino has the Nova Southeastern men’s golf team back in the postseason, as the Sharks were named among the 80 teams selected to participate in regional competition as part of the 2019 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. Nova Southeastern earned the No. 4 seed out of the south region, and will begin its quest for national title No. 3 when the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional opens up at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. on May 9. FULL RELEASE
