Van Gurp Tabbed SSC Player of the Year

Having reached the 30-win mark for the first time since 2014, the Nova Southeastern softball team added to its notable season on Thursday, as a pair of standouts were recognized on the All-Sunshine State Conference teams. Second baseman Suka Van Gurp became the fourth player in program history to be selected as the SSC Player of the Year, while sophomore pitcher Miriam Schmoll was named as a member of the All-SSC Second Team. FULL RELEASE

Tampa Bay Regional Campus: Let’s Talk About It: Sexual Assault and the First Response, May 16

A sociodrama on effective responses and communication with sexual assault survivors

Join the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Tampa Bay Regional Campus on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. as we experience the emotional and mental state of a survivor while assessing the situation through the eyes of a first responder. Participants will engage in real-life scenarios and discuss relevant, effective interventions.

Attendees will:

  • Learn how to identify individual characteristics related to trauma
  • Obtain skills and techniques to use when interacting with survivors
  • Explore the prevalence, warning signs, and coping strategies for individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Discover best practice treatment approaches based on Judith Herman’s trauma-focused framework

CAHSS Faculty Presents Lectures as Guest Artist at UNCG and Belmont University

While on sabbatical from NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Bill J. Adams, D.M.A., associate professor in the Department of Performing and Visual Arts, has presented lectures at the University of North Carolina Greensboro School of Theatre and at Belmont University School of Music in Nashville.

Adams is a certified instructor of the performance training method, Acting and Singing with Archetypes, which synthesizes the imagination, the voice, and the body as a starting point for character development in theatre. He has been invited, along with Christine Morris, MFA, associate professor in UNCG’s School of Theatre, to submit an article on Acting and Singing with Archetypes for the Vocal Traditions Series in the Voice and Speech Review, the journal of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.

NSU Hosts 34th Annual Scholarship Golf Classic

Hosted at PGA National Resort and Spa, the 34th Annual Nova Southeastern University Scholarship Golf Classic took place on Friday, April 12. The proceeds from the Scholarship Golf Classic directly impact NSU student-athletes by way of scholarships and academic support.

Since its inception, the NSU Scholarship Golf Classic has raised over 6.4 million dollars in endowments funds to benefit the student-athlete scholarship fund. Through live and silent auctions, a raffle the day of the tournament and through generous donations from the event sponsors, the tournament was one of the most successful golf events in recent history.

“The Scholarship Golf Classic is the perfect combination of a successfully ran special event and an outpouring of philanthropic support, all while supporting a great benefactor – the student-athletes of NSU,” boasted Director of Athletics Michael Mominey. “We have been so fortunate to have so many friends of the university who have been supportive of the event for so many years, I am humbled to be part of the greater purpose and lead a preeminent athletic program with great student-athletes who are ambassadors of our university on and off the field of play”.

The support and success of the Scholarship Golf Classic is essential to the sustainable success of NSU’s NCAA Division II athletic program. Nova Southeastern currently sponsors 17 teams, as well as the Sharkettes spirit squad. The Sharks have captured eight NCAA Team National Championships, 21 Individual NCAA National Championships, and 36 Sunshine State Conference Championships.

NSU student-athletes live the core values and vision of the university by realizing their potential on and off the field and. In addition to athletic accomplishments, they are driven to perform at the highest level in academics. As a result, NSU Athletics has achieved a collective departmental GPA of 3.0 or higher for the past 16 consecutive years and for the past three years have achieved a 3.20 GPA or higher.

New NSU SharkCard Wins National Best Card Design Award

NSU’s new identification card, the SharkCard, dominated at the 26th Annual National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU) Conference where it won the first-place award for best card design. The newly designed SharkCard was one of five finalists among the University of Alabama, Clemson University, the University at Albany, and Southeastern Louisiana University, selected by the awards committee based on a grading matrix. NSU’s SharkCard proceeded to score the most votes from the NACCU members prior to and during the NACCU Annual Conference.

The new NSU SharkCard features the photo-realistic rendering of NSU’s mascot, the shortfin mako shark, along with the tagline “Prepare to Dominate” in front of a school of small fish. NSU’s University School will also be rolling out a new card design to better represent NSU’s new brand. Both cards were designed by Bryan Barrett, graphic designer and identity standards specialist in NSU’s Office of Publications and Creative Services. Vernol Robinson, director of NSU’s SharkCard Services, accepted the award on behalf of the university at the NACCU conference during in April 7-10, 2019, in Hartford, Connecticut. “We are very honored to have received this prestigious design award. It shows that our new brand identity not only resonates with our students, but also with our colleagues and peers at other institutions on a national level,” stated Robinson.

NSU’s new SharkCard will be issued to new members of the NSU community beginning in May 2019.

The NSU SharkCard is NSU’s official identification card for all members of the NSU community, including students, faculty, and staff. It provides access to buildings and parking lots and can be used to make purchases on and off campus. NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Hosts Dean’s List Ceremony

Honggang Yang, Ph.D., dean of NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), hosted the CAHSS Dean’s List Ceremony on April 3, 2019. CAHSS hosts the Dean’s List Ceremony once a year, so students who earned a spot on the Dean’s List in Winter 2018 or Fall 2019 were eligible, excluding graduates. A term GPA of 3.8 or higher is required to be on the Dean’s List. One hundred nine students were on the Dean’s List, and fifty-nine students attended the ceremony. A luncheon was provided for those in attendance.

Conflict Analysis and Resolution Alumnus is the COO of the Seattle Police Department

Mark Baird, Ph.D., graduate of the doctoral program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, was named the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Seattle Police Department. In this role, he oversees Professional Standards, Administrative Services, Budget and Finance, the 911 Communication Center and Information Technology.  

As COO, he works with various city entities and sits on several citywide committees and Mayoral subcabinets. He is responsible for the predominately-civilian support side of the organization. There is work in policy development, analysis, and implementation.

Baird indicated that, “My CR education has been very instrumental in my job and I use components of it each day.”

Prior to earning his doctorate degree from NSU, Baird earned his B.A. in Political Science from Central Washington University, and his M.P.A. from Florida Gulf Coast University. His extensive professional experience includes serving as the Executive Director of Budget and Finance, overseeing Budget, Facilities, Jail Coordination, and manages significant departmental projects. He served as a crime analyst and later the analytical supervisor and ComStat coordinator for the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and had a similar role in the Portland Police Bureau. While in graduate school, Baird was a research fellow for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He was the programs/operations analyst for the Snohomish County Department of Corrections and later became the Chief of Administration.  He has been an adjunct instructor at Clackamas Community College in Oregon and at Portland State University.
