NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Faculty Co-produces the play, The Weir

James Doan, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Literature and Modern Languages in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), was the co-producer, with Christopher Harrington, of the play, The Weir, by Conor McPherson. The South Florida Irish Theatre and ACT of Davie hosted the play on March 15 and 16, 2019, in Davie. The Weir is about a group of men drinking in a bar in rural Ireland and swapping ghost stories. A woman from Dublin arrives and weaves a tale of her own.

Doan is a co-founder of the South Florida Irish Theatre and is actively involved in the theatre community in South Florida, having written and directed plays for Actors Community Theatre (ACT) in Davie. His research interests include the legend of King Arthur; late Renaissance English drama; Irish and Celtic literature; the figure of the vampire in myth, legend and film; and the supernatural in general.

Sharks Rowing Ranked Eighth in the Nation

Nova Southeastern women’s rowing was announced among the top programs in the nation in the latest NCAA DII Poll by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing. The Sharks are currently positioned in eighth-place after receiving 28 total votes, as they are looking to carry that momentum into a strong showing at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Central Sprints on Friday in Edmond, Okla.

REACTIONS FROM HEAD COACH DEVIN FAY:

  • “What is incredible to me is if you look at the list you will see Central Oklahoma, Western Washington, Humboldt State and UC San Diego as four of the top five teams in the nation, ranked by the coaches and we get an opportunity to see all of them this weekend.”
  • “It should be a great test against the top teams in the country as many of them have a shot at making nationals. This opportunity will allow us to see the top end speed in all of Division II rowing.”
  • “The team is really excited to go out and see what we’ve got! There will be seven teams at the race, several of whom are nationally ranked, and it will be great to see where we stand in comparison to these programs.”

Basketball Times Names Matthews Third Team All-American

For the second time in as many weeks, Nova Southeastern’s Mark Matthews has been recognized as an All-American, this time being named a third team pick by the Basketball Times. Matthews was previously named as an honorable mention selection by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA).

The team leader in both points (20.6 ppg) and rebounds (9.6 rpg), Matthews proved to be a double-double machine in his first year with the Sharks, recording an impressive 16 in his 33 starts. The Bonita Springs, Fla. native shined on the biggest stages, carrying Nova Southeastern with some notable performances in the postseason. After pouring in a season-high 32 points in the NCAA South Region Semifinal victory over West Alabama, Matthews tallied 18 points and 11 boards in the Sharks’ regional title win against rival Lynn. He then added 31 points and 13 boards in the Elite Eight against a Saint Anselm club that led its league in field goal percentage defense. The redshirt junior scored in double-figures in all but one contest, and set numerous single-season, NCAA-era program records for the Sharks in 2018-19, including points (680), field goals (290), total rebounds (316), and offensive rebounds (151).

Matthews’ postseason accolade marks his sixth overall.

Division II Bulletin Tabs Dennis as All-America Honorable Mention

Putting the finishing touches on his illustrious career, David Dennis has been named an All-America Honorable Mention selection, announced by Division II Bulletin.

Dennis joins teammate Mark Matthews as the second Shark to be named an All-American following a senior campaign in which he filled up the stat sheet for 15.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists to go along with 2.8 steals per game on the defensive end. His 28-point effort in the NCAA South Region title game against rival Lynn earned him tournament MVP, and sent the Sharks to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. In just two seasons with Nova Southeastern, Dennis became only the 15th Shark to surpass the 1,000-point mark, and closed his collegiate career as one of only two players in NCAA history, across all divisions, with at least 1,800 career points, 600 career rebounds, 700 career assists, and 300 career steals.

The latest postseason accolade marks the fourth on-court award for Dennis, with a fifth handed out after earning Google Cloud First Team Academic All-District back in February.

Shaw’s Amir Hinton was recognized as the Division II Bulletin Player of the Year.
