The Nova Southeastern Sharks baseball team is coming off a 35-16 campaign last season, going three games deep in the NCAA Division II South Regional Championships – the team’s fourth straight – and announced on Friday the 2019 slate under ninth-year head coach Greg Brown. FULL RELEASE

With the 2019 NCAA Division II baseball season just over the horizon, the Nova Southeastern Sharks earned a No. 20 preseason ranking in the annual poll by Collegiate Baseball News, while seniors Samuel Duran and Christian Demby received individual recognition from the national publication. After a strong performance this past weekend in a 200-62 victory over the Florida Southern Moccasins, Jenna Johns has earned her first SSC Swimmer of the Week award. While this is the sophomore’s first honor this season, this is her fourth all-time. FULL RELEASE
For the second time in as many years, Nova Southeastern point guard David Dennis has been selected to the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List, announced by Small College Basketball. The prestigious honor recognizes the cream of the crop nationwide throughout both NCAA Divisions II and Division III, NAIA Divisions I and II, as well as the USCAA and NCCAA. FULL RELEASE

The Nova Southeastern University Fort Myers Campus Physician Assistant (PA) class of 2020 recently planned, organized, and then carried out a very successful Project SEED (Serving Everyone, Embracing Diversity) event. Project SEED is centered on the NSU core values and has become an event for the students, faculty, and staff at the Fort Myers Campus to rally behind. The Fort Myers Campus community overwhelmingly supported this year’s event by generously donating to a clothing drive organized by Project SEED. Forty-five boxes of gently used clothes and shoes were gathered at the campus and then delivered to the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee, FL as a part of Project SEED. This is where the old items from the campus go for resale to support the Early Childhood Education Program, After-School Enrichment Program, and Tutor Corps Program all run by the Guadalupe Center.
This year, the organizers embraced the directive set forth by George L. Hanbury, II, president and CEO, Nova Southeastern University to adopt an Interprofessional Education (IPE) model. The Fort Myers Campus Project SEED students worked together with the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine students at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus to adopt the IPE goal set forth by Hanbury.
The 2019 Fort Myers Campus PA Student Organization continued the best practices of the past, which included gloves and protective glasses donations, blood pressure and glucose testing, nutrition booth, sports equipment donations, children’s activities, dental hygiene, mosquito awareness, HIV screenings, and bike donations. The bike donations have become an important part of the health fair as they are a primary means of transportation for many of the residents of Immokalee.
Another added feature to this year’s event was a computer give-away. Working with the Office of Innovation and Information Technology (OIIT) at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus, 13 old NSU computers were reformatted and then distributed through a raffle to the attendees at Project SEED. What is old to NSU is a new beginning for some of the Immokalee residents.
Claudia Manuel and Dr. Judith McKay
Judith McKay, J.D., Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) provided a workshop on conflict resolution perspectives on crisis, and negotiation to the Broward County Multi-Agency Crisis Response Teams as part of their hostage negotiation training. The event was sponsored by the Plantation Police Department and NSU.
In addition to McKay, Claudia Manuel, graduate student in the M.A. in Cross-disciplinary Studies program participated. Manuel was completing her practicum with McKay as her supervisor in CAHSS’ Community Resolution Services, a practicum and volunteer site for students. McKay has been a frequent trainer for law enforcement agencies for several decades.
Andrea Shaw Nevins, Ph.D.
Andrea Nevins Shaw, Ph.D., faculty and chair of the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), provided the keynote address at the Induction Ceremony for the Alpha Chi National Honor Society at NSU on November 14, 2018. Shaw addressed the challenges she faced in her twenties when she did not honor her own interests, rather did what she believed was expected. She shared how fear and doubt eventually led her to reach for her own dreams and accomplish her goals. Using her own experiences with juggling graduate school and family responsibilities, Shaw encouraged the new inductees to attain their goals.
