Alumni Spotlight: FCE Graduate Named Department Chair at Virginia Union University


Monekka Munroe, Ed.D., graduate of Nova Southeastern University’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education was appointed Department Chair of Virginia Union University’s Criminal Justice Program.

Munroe has been teaching criminal justice courses for 10 years and has been an advocate for criminal justice reform, specifically for female inmates. She was selected as a TED Talk presenter in 2016 because of that advocacy, where she spoke about the injustices of the criminal justice system. Munroe was FCE’s keynote speaker at the 2017 Summer Institute.

This spring, she taught and developed a course that explains the correlation between childhood trauma and adult criminality, it will be taught in a local Virginia jail in the fall of 2018. Additionally, she is currently in the process of writing her very first criminal justice textbook.

Munroe earned her doctorate of education, with a major in higher education leadership in 2016.

FCE Thanks Professors for Their Assistance with New Recruitment Efforts


NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education, recently thanked a few of its Professors for their help with new recruiting efforts at the college.

Michael Simonson, Ph.D., and Gina Peyton, Ed.D., Associate Professors, Department of Higher Education Leadership and Instructional Technology, were each acknowledged with a gift card for their support to the FCE Recruitment team in launching the inaugural Facebook Live sessions. These sessions among various topics, discussed and promoted popular graduate level education programs, and the job opportunities that could be available with a degree in these areas. It was also a time to highlight two of the FCE esteemed faculty members.

Silvia Orta, Ed.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Higher Education Leadership and Instructional Technology, was also recognized with a gift card for her countless support of Fischler initiatives to recruit prospective students at events, which included the NSU 2018 Spring Open House where she spoke about her experiences as a doctoral student and professional opportunities the degree brought her. In addition, Dr. Orta played an integral part in the FCE summer 2018 call campaign to current students that had not yet registered offering her assistance with enrolling for this term.

Fischler College of Education and the Office of International Affairs Host Graduation Reception

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and the Office of International Affairs hosted a commencement reception on June 15 in the Sales Institute for students graduating from the Asia doctoral cohorts. The event was attended by the graduating students, their families, and many faculty and staff members of the Fischler College of Education, as well as Anthony DeNapoli, Ed.D., Associate Dean, Office of International Affairs. At the reception, students thanked the group of faculty who had traveled to Asia to teach the blended classes, and everyone who had guided them along their doctoral journey.

This is the first time the Office of International Affairs has held a reception for a graduating group of students. It was such a positive experience that OIA hopes to collaborate with other academic units to do the same in the future.

International Association of Women Honors FCE Alum as a 2018-2019 Influencer of the Year


T. Sharis Robinson, graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education, was named a 2018-2019 Influencer of the Year by the International Association of Women (IAW).

Ms. Robinson is currently the Dependency Director at the Children’s Home Society of Florida. She works repeatedly to improve the lives of children and families in the state of Florida, while working closely with the judicial system and organizational partners to promote change in the child welfare system. Ms. Robinson’s motto is “positive output encourages feedback.” In the future, she hopes to become more involved in policy making decisions for the protection of children in Florida and create more awareness about the issue of child welfare in communities.

Ms. Robinson earned her Masters of Organization Leadership at the Fishler College of Education in 2014.

Romer Ocanto, Chair of the CDM’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Honored at International Conference


Romer Ocanto, D.D.S., M.S., CAGS, chair of the CDM’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry, was presented with a Certificate of Recognition for the best poster at the International Conference on Dentistry and Oral Health held in September in Valencia, Spain.

Ocanto also received $500 Euros toward expenses at the 2018 meeting to be held in Rome. In addition, Ocanto has been invited to speak about the CDM grant at the University of Malta (L-Università ta’ Malta) for the Dental Medicine faculty, Department of Oral Rehabilitation and Community Dental Care in Valetta, Malta, during 2018.

Ocanto has secured $8,058,231 since 2007 toward improving access to dental care to children with Special Health Care Needs (SHCN). In June of 2015, Ocanto secured a $3,391,788 grant from the Health Resource and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA) to provide this training to pediatric dentistry and advanced education in general dentistry residents over a five-year period. To date Ocanto has received four grants from HRSA.

This project is 100% financed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number D88HP20126 and Postdoctoral Training in General, Pediatric and Public Health Dentistry and Dental Hygiene for $3,391,788. NSU Optometry Student Receives National Scholarship


Jeremy Chartash, a fourth-year student at NSU’s College of Optometry was honored with the Dr. Pat & Patrick Cummings Scholarship ($5,000) from The AOA Foundation, the charitable organization of the American Optometric Association (AOA). The AOA Foundation administers numerous scholarships that encourage students to make a difference for their community and the profession of optometry.

In tribute to father and son, both of whom passed away in separate tragic accidents, the Dr. Pat & Patrick Cummings Memorial Fund was established through Optometry Cares. This opportunity was generously funded by numerous individual donors, as well as a large contribution from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.

As Cummings was a dedicated philanthropist in his profession, the scholarship requires recipients to write an essay about their goals in the area of public health and leadership roles in optometry.

NEHEP Welcomes College of Optometry Associate Professor to Planning Committee


The National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) announced Janet Leasher, O.D., M.P.H, F.A.A.O., associate professor of optometry at NSU’s College of Optometry, as its new Planning Committee member for 2015‒2018. The Planning Committee, which advises the National Eye Institute on the overall development, implementation, and evaluation of NEHEP activities, comprises experts in eye care and public health education.

Leasher has served as the director of community outreach for NSU’s College of Optometry since June 2003. She spearheads community health education and promotion projects in visual health. Her current teaching assignments in the Doctor of Optometry program include public health didactic courses and primary care, pediatric, and binocular vision clinics. She is also a member of the faculty in the Master of Science Clinical Vision Research program and holds a faculty appointment within the Public Health program at NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her research interests include program evaluation and global access to quality vision care.

NSU College of Dental Medicine Dean Named Fellow by National Science Organization


Linda Niessen, D.M.D., M.P.H., M.P.P., dean and professor of the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) College of Dental Medicine, was recently named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She was elected to receive this honor by her AAAS peers.

Niessen is one of 396 AAAS members who were chosen by their peers for “scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.” Specifically, she was lauded for her distinguished contributions to the field of dental public health, particularly geriatric oral medicine, dental services and health policy as well as access to oral health care. Niessen will be inducted as a Fellow at the AAAS Annual Meeting on Saturday, February 17, 2018 in Austin, Texas.

“It is truly an honor to be named a Fellow by this prestigious group of peers,” said Niessen. “The AAAS promotes scientific discovery, translational research and science education throughout the world. The interdisciplinary nature of the members of AAAS advances and strengthens the field of dentistry by supporting research and discoveries that will ultimately benefit patients around the globe.”

Niessen joined NSU in October 2013. She previously served as a clinical professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at Texas A&M University’s Baylor College of Dentistry. Niessen’s research interests include geriatric oral research and education, epidemiology of oral diseases in older adults, and oral health public policy.

Niessen received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry (Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of New Mexico and her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Master’s in Public Health (MPH) and Master’s in Public Policy (MPP), all from Harvard University.

CAHSS Alum is Inducted into National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals


Stanley Zamor, M.S., graduate of the master’s program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution and the B.S. in Legal Studies in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS), has been inducted into the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. Membership in the National Academy is by invitation only after having been nominated and fully vetted. Most of the members are attorneys and retired judges.

Zamor is the former President of the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators (FAPM). As the FAPM president, he was the first non-attorney to lead the organization as well as the youngest and the first Caribbean-American president.

Zamor spent years in the legal field as a paralegal and mediator. He is currently in private practice as a mediator, trainer, and conflict resolution specialist. He is Florida Supreme Court certified in county, circuit civil and family mediation and a qualified arbitrator. He has served as an arbitrator for FINRA and has been selected as a mediator by federal and state agencies.

NSU Alumni Spotlight: CAHSS Alumna Named Senior Program Manager at US Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution


Marci DuPraw, Ph.D., doctoral graduate from NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), was named Senior Program Manager at the US Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution (US Institute). Congress established the US Institute in 1998 to provide impartial consensus-building, collaboration, and conflict resolution services. One of the projects DuPraw will be working on is managing the Institute’s support for a very large, landscape-scale collaboration (the Missouri River Recovery process).

Previously DuPraw was a Senior Mediator/Senior Facilitator at the Center for Collaborative Policy in Sacramento. She was the Senior Mediator/Senior Director for Kearns & West, Inc., in Portland, Oregon and the Senior Facilitator and Mediator for SRA International, Inc., in Arlington, VA. In 2011, DuPraw was the recipient of the Association for Conflict Resolution’s Sharon M. Pickett Award for achievement in environmental protection using alternative dispute resolution.

In addition to her doctoral degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS), DuPraw completed a Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research from the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies (DMS). She earned her B.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of California, and her M.S. in Natural Resource Policy, Economics and Management from the University of Michigan. DuPraw has been an adjunct faculty member in DCRS and DMS.
