Educators Publish Article in Southern Discourse in the Center

Nikki Chasteen, M.A., NSU Writing & Communication Center (WCC) Assistant Director; Kevin Dvorak, Ph.D. NSU WCC Executive Director; and Kelly Concannon, Ph.D., Eric Mason, Ph.D., and Janine Morris, Ph.D, NSU WCC Faculty Coordinators, published “From Crisis to Habit: Re-Shaping Academic Conferences for Remote Communities” in the Fall 2022 issue of Southern Discourse in the Center. Dvorak, Concannon, Mason, and Morris are all faculty members in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts (DCMA) in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences (HCAS). Chasteen is an alumna of the DCMA Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media master’s program.

“From Crisis to Habit” focuses on lessons learned while hosting the virtual 2022 Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) conference, February 2022. Chasteen et al. co-hosted the conference, with support from DCMA and the SWCA board. Of the experience, Chasteen et al. reflect, “Almost two years into the pandemic, and with all of this uncertainty in mind, we wondered what we could do to engage conference participants in needed conversations, how we could understand this period as an opportunity to maximize our most productive habits, and what lessons we had learned in the process” (11). The article provides advice for educators interested in hosting remote conferences.

NSU Hosts Free Online Conference on Autism, April 1-21

The annual Issues in Autism Conference will be held online from April 1-21, 2023. Hosted by the NSU Satellite of UM-NSU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, this year’s topic is Social Emotional Engagement:  The “Fuel” for Learning with Emily Rubin as the featured speaker. The sessions are pre-recorded so that participants can view them at their convenience. There is no cost to attend but registration is required by March 27. Register at: https://bit.ly/3ymmh1L.

About the Conference

Findings of research in social neuroscience foster our ability to create supportive learning environments where social-emotional engagement is a “fuel” for learning and emotional well-being, both with our neurodiverse students as well as our educators. While standards-based instruction is our focus in the classroom, our learners are more likely to access the curriculum when they are invested, independent, and initiating with their peers and teachers.

This session will begin with a review of the neuroscience of learning and shift toward a practical discussion of the “why” we need to measure and enhance learner engagement.  Participants will learn about the Social Engagement Ladder, a freely accessible tool for measuring learning engagement and identifying opportunities for enhancing engagement. In addition, participants will learn “what” to do when there are opportunities to enhance engagement. The session will introduce a freely accessible tool, the SEE-KS Quick Reference tool, as a reference for identifying strategies for enhancing engagement that is consistent with a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework.  Participants will also learn “how” to mentor one’s multidisciplinary team members using appreciative inquiry to identify what is already working as well as opportunities for the next steps.

NSU Launches New Off-Campus Housing Website

NSU’s University Housing is providing additional resource options for our students that won’t be able to live on campus, our graduate students who are also navigating the private leasing market, as well as NSU’s faculty and staff. We are excited to launch our brand new off-campus housing website, www.offcampus.nova.edu partnering with Apartments.com. The site will exclusively serve students and staff of NSU. Those with an NSU login will be able to sign up and access the site. Apartments.com will continuously be monitoring the site, reviewing and posting new property listings, and ensuring safety among users. The site is officially live, and we are excited to see the amount of listings grow and develop over the next year. You have the option to search for listings, create a roommate profile of yourself, and search for potential roommates that are affiliated with NSU based on the profile characteristics.

There will also be representatives from many of the properties from this website on campus with more information about their community at the NSU Housing Fair on Tuesday, March 21. The fair will be held in the Spine of the Don’t Taft University Center, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
