College of Psychology Receives ASCA Recognition

On February 1, 2023, the College of Psychology’s M.S. in Counseling: School Counseling concentration earned national recognition through the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Specialized Professional Association (SPA) under the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Per ASCA, their school counselor preparation program standards, “are a unified set of principles guiding school counselor preparation programs in training effective future school counselors in areas of professional practice and ethical behavior.”

NSU is the first-ever program to be awarded this national recognition. Attaining this specialty recognition was an essential component of maintaining CAEP accreditation as an advanced program, and it required the School Counseling program to demonstrate that they met each of the ASCA School Counselor Preparation Program Standards. In May 2022, the program was also granted the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accreditation with the Fischler College of Education & School of Criminal Justice.

The School Counseling concentration is one of five options offered as part of the M.S. in Counseling program. The concentration, which consists of 48 credit hours, is offered online. As part of the curriculum, students attend two residential institutes on campus.

More information about the ASCA SPA can be found HERE.

Transformational Gift Leads to NSU Renaming College of Pharmacy

Dr. Barry Silverman and his wife, Judy

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is proud to announce that Board of Trustees Vice Chair, and Chair of the NSU Health Professions Division Board of Governors Dr. Barry Silverman and his wife, Judy, have made a transformational gift to the university as part of the Campaign to Preeminence.

This generous gift will provide for student scholarships and endowment support to enhance the financial sustainability of three preeminent NSU entities: its College of Pharmacy, the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, and the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.

Dr. Barry and Judy Silverman are particularly interested in enhancing the growth and continued impact of NSU’s stellar pharmacy program, not only in Fort Lauderdale/Davie, but also at the university’s Palm Beach and San Juan, Puerto Rico campuses.

To honor this transformational gift, the college will now be known as NSU’s Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy.

“Education is something near and dear to our hearts, and to be able to provide a gift that will change the lives of students and the next generation of pharmacists and doctors was something we could not pass up,” said Dr. Silverman, who is an orthopedic surgeon. “NSU is a major part of our lives, and Judy and I are honored to be able to help enhance what these colleges and the NSU Art Museum are doing for our students and community as we all work together toward preeminence.”

Currently, NSU’s Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy has almost 1,000 students enrolled at its three locations, as well as more than 6,000 graduates who are researchers, innovators and advocates for their patients. The Pharm.D. program was recently granted another full eight-year re-accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Its Pharm.D. graduates are among the highest NAPLEX pass rates for Florida’s private colleges of pharmacy, and it’s the only program in the United States to operate a full-service campus-based community pharmacy and an institutional pharmacy. The college is known for its many research successes and its commitment to diversity, volunteerism and community service.

This gift is a major step in NSU reaching its goal of $500 million by 2025, with our giving total so far in 2023 now at $412 million. The Silvermans are the latest visionaries to join a list of NSU supporters and benefactors who are helping the university on its path to preeminence.

“What a month of achievement this has been for NSU, with two new national accreditations last week and now this naming gift for one of our world-class colleges,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President and CEO. “It’s been a privilege to work with Barry and Judy over the past few months to secure this gift and accomplish the many impacts they wished to see and how they wanted their efforts to benefit the students most of all.”

For example, in addition to the scholarship and endowment support already mentioned, and in further recognition of this gift, each year during the commencement exercise of the Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy, the dean of the college will present to the graduating Pharm.D. student exhibiting the highest scholastic achievement in his or her class, and who best exemplifies the exemplary characteristics of a preeminent pharmacist, the Barry and Judy Silverman Award.

“This leadership gift from the Silvermans will help fuel the college’s continuing path to preeminence,” said Michelle A. Clark, Ph.D., dean of NSU’s Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy. “It will allow us to offer more students scholarships so they can become inclusive leaders in the science and practice of pharmacy who will improve health and well-being through discovery, innovation, advocacy and the delivery of optimal patient care.”

Please join NSU in celebrating this generous gift and in recognizing the Silvermans as champions in the university’s rise to preeminence as we work together to make yours a healthier world.

Art + Design Professor Delivers Guest Lecture

Science and art came together for students who participated in a guest lecture led by Art + Design Professor Kandy Lopez-Moreno of the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts.

The guest lecture sought to teach environmental science students in Professor Paul Balduaf’s ENVS 3000 course basic concepts and techniques for freehand field sketching. The 2-hour and 24-minute-long lab session instructed students in sketching fossils, plants, and landscapes to a specific scale. Through this experience, environmental science students developed the basic sketching skills and techniques needed to capture important visual data.

“Dr. Baldauf and I have been working together for a few years now to try to connect science and art majors. Most of our students have either majors or minors in both programs and it’s important to showcase some of the similarities between these disciplines,” said Professor Lopez-Moreno.

The collaboration, supported by the Interdisciplinary Research and Teaching Initiatives Committee (IRTIC), helps foster student and faculty engagement across disciplinary boundaries.

Professor Patricia Gaffney Receives Outstanding Educator Award

Patricia Gaffney, Au.D.

Each year, the American Academy of Audiology asks colleagues, friends, and mentees to look around their professional circles and recognize members who are deserving of recognition for outstanding service to audiology and the hearing sciences. This year, Patricia Gaffney, Au.D., was chosen as the 2023 recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award and the Department of Audiology could not be prouder!

Gaffney has distinguished herself as a superior professor in the Department of Audiology, where her demanding didactic courses, clinical supervision, and research mentorship have earned her high respect from her students and her faculty colleagues.

Gaffney has been teaching doctoral audiology students since her appointment to Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 2007. She teaches multiple courses in vestibular science and amplification where she skillfully weaves theory to practice from classroom to clinic. In the clinical realm, Gaffney precepts students and provides care to patients in the NSU Audiology Clinic.  Most of her clinical focus is seeing adult and pediatric patients with vestibular complaints. This is where you can truly see Gaffney’s impact as students start translating what they have learned in the classroom to clinical practice.

Gaffney’s teaching philosophy is simple:

“Make our students into the best audiologists. When you produce good audiologists, that speaks for itself in the profession. The impact of well-trained audiologists is a continuous process because it means that patients will be treated in the way they need, and when the graduate become a preceptor, it will enhance the knowledge of the next generation of audiologists. Every day when I teach, that is in the forefront of my mind. This guides how I plan my semester, write lectures, precept students in the clinic, and counsel them.”

Gaffney represents the very best in education and we are all better for having been her colleague over the years.

Students Gain Experience as Social Media Strategists

M.A. in Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media students in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts had the chance to put on their social strategist hats when their class partnered with Symphony of the Americas as part of a class collaboration during the Summer 2022 semester. The graduate course, WRIT 5250: Social Media Writing and Strategy, is offered every other summer and offers students hands-on experience designing a social media campaign for a client.

“It was exciting seeing our students in action as social media professionals for a Broward County Major Cultural Institution that has served the South Florida community for 35 seasons,” said Associate Professor of Communication Whitney Lehmann, Ph.D., APR, who teaches the course. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with and learn from the Symphony of the Americas team.”

Students worked with the organization’s executive director, Steven Haines, and community development manager, Erin Fontes, to complete a social media audit, propose campaign objectives and complete deliverables, which included a social media manual, a newsletter, a content calendar, social media branding, audience-driven content, social media analytics and more.

In addition to the class collaboration, one CRDM student, Kaitlyn was also selected for a social media internship with the organization for the 2022-2023 academic year.

“It was an honor to work with Symphony of the Americas,” said Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts Shanti Bruce, Ph.D., “this was an outstanding professional experience for our graduate students.”
