Farquhar Honors College Sisters Present at National Conference

From left, Jenna and Marina Handal at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego.

Farquhar Honors College student Jenna Handal and her sister Marina Handal, an honors alum, presented their joint research at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) Annual Scientific Meeting. The sister duo collaborated to explore cosmetic surgery options for patients who have undergone weight loss surgery.

The pair came together to conduct this research due to their shared interest in medicine and public health. Jenna is a junior pre-med student, and Marina is a second-year Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)/Master of Public Health (MPH) student at NSU.

“I felt very humbled to have presented at the AACS conference alongside doctors, residents, and other health professionals who I admire for their hard work and achievements,” said Jenna. “I was also proud to share my research with the other poster presenters and felt so fortunate to learn about their findings.”

Their research will serve as a comprehensive guide for physicians and patients who need details on the risks, benefits, costs, satisfaction rates, etc., of the various cosmetic procedures available to eliminate excess tissue and loose skin after weight loss surgery.

“Attending the AACS conference taught me the importance of getting involved and playing an active role as a student researcher,” said Jenna. “I gained experience presenting research in a professional setting, which will surely help me in the future. I was also afforded the opportunity to connect with individuals in the medical field who gave me valuable advice for years to come.”

Fischler Alum Receives President’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Karlton Johnson, Ed.D.

A Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice alum recently received a recognition of presidential proportions.

Karlton Johnson, Ed.D., received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joe Biden in recognition of 5,000 hours of service in Florida, Texas, Virginia, and Arkansas.

The purpose of the award is to recognize the people across America who have volunteered thousands of hours over their lifetime. It was first established by President George W. Bush in 2003, but variations of the program have existed over the years.

“By sharing your time and passion, you are helping discover and deliver solutions to the challenges we face, the solutions that we need now more than ever,” the president said in a letter. “We are living in a moment that calls for hope and light and love. Hope for our futures light to see our way forward and love for one another. Through your service, you’re providing all three.”

“When I actually saw the award, saw the certificate, saw the badge and saw my metal, I was like, ‘Wow, this is real. A letter from the president himself,’” Johnson said. “This definitely put me on a platform where the notoriety of public education in districts across the country is really on the map.”

Johnson currently serves as the Director of Career and Technical Education for Broward County Public schools. Having spent more than 25 years in the education field, he said this was something his younger self never would have imagined.

“Our work is not just within the organization in which we work for the infrastructure, our work is mainly involvement and community outreach,” he said. “I’m so happy that the President and the Vice President were able to acknowledge those individuals across the world and I just happened to be one.”

The recognition left Johnson with the sense that his work is making an impact.

“It lets me know that the work that I do has a purpose towards changing lives and supporting lives across the country, and just not being an educator but just doing community outreach to help students across our country have a brighter future,” he said.

Johnson earned his M.S. in Educational Leadership in 2000 and his Doctor of Education in 2015 from NSU.

Congratulations Karlton Johnson! Fins up to you!

NSU Social Media Team Presents at PRSA Meeting

From right, Andrew Rivera and James Profetto

On Feb. 16, the Public Relations Society of America’s Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter hosted their monthly meeting at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Campus. NSU was well represented with their social media team in attendance: James Profetto, social media manager, and Andrew Rivera, social media content specialist. The panel tackled the topic of social media and best practices for growing engagement across all platforms.

Along with answering questions from professionals, NSU’s social media team presented a case study that detailed how they showcased the university’s partnership with the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program and turned it into an award-winning campaign.

“This was a wonderful chance to showcase what NSU has done to advance the landscape of social media in higher education,” Profetto said. “Like the old adage says, ‘A rising tide lifts all ships,’ so to be able to give and receive guidance in this field helped me leave feeling inspired and confident about the impact of social media in telling stories and empowering others for years to come.”

With more than 30 people in attendance, there was room for a bit of teaching and a whole lot of learning.

“It was a privilege to share what I’ve learned in the field with others to help them achieve their goals,” Rivera said. “If there’s something I’ve learned in my professional experience, it’s to always remain innovative and learn from others. This was another opportunity to do just that.”

StoryFest Offers Free Community Event March 5 on NSU Campus

Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Alvin Sherman Library will host its annual StoryFest! on Sunday, March 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guests will enjoy a fun-filled day of storytelling, live shows, crafts and more during this FREE community event. The theme for StoryFest 2023 is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). We’ll be exploring science, technology, engineering, arts and math with storytelling, theatre shows, music, storybook characters, arts & crafts, interactive science activities, and more!

“We are excited to once again host this family-focused event to benefit the local community,” said Jim Hutchens, NSU’s vice president for information services and university librarian. “Caregivers and children will have the opportunity to read, explore and learn, while also spending quality time together.”

Over the past 10 years, nearly 35,000 residents have attended the event, and more than 18,000 books have been distributed to children in our community as part of StoryFest! As part of the library’s efforts to encourage reading, each child who attends the event will receive a free book, while supplies last. Attendees are kindly asked to RSVP at lib.nova.edu/storyfest

Pre-registration is not required but it will allow guests to be eligible for a prize. Parking will be free throughout the entire event. Children can get their faces painted, design crafts, play sports, explore science, enjoy theatre shows and take photos with Curious George, Llama Llama and Splat the Cat.

Our community’s food insecurity poses an extreme threat to the wellbeing of children and their families. The good news is Feeding South Florida will be distributing food at this year’s event. Free pizza and hot dogs also will be served courtesy of Hungry Howies. In addition, families who pre-register for StoryFest are eligible to win a gift card!
