Speaker Discusses Prey Defense and Pattern Formation, March 24

Photo of Evan Haskell, Ph.D., sitting at an outdoor restaurant by the ocean.

The Halmos College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics will host guest speaker Evan Haskell, Ph.D., as part of their Mathematics Colloquium Series.  Haskell will be discussing how prey defense patterns influence predator-prey distributions.  The review will cover pattern formation resulting from prey defenses that lead to spatial segregation from their predators as well as the potential impact of prey defense mechanisms on prey species in resource competition.

Evan Haskell, Ph.D. is a professor of mathematics at NSU Florida. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 2000. Dr. Haskell joined the faculty at NSU in 2005 and has served as mentor and professor to hundreds of NSU students. He works on applied problems inspired by the real and engineered world.

“Prey Defense Patterns / Predator-Prey Distributions,” will take place on Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 12:30 – 1:20 p.m. in Parker Building, Room 338.  The entire NSU community, including students at all levels of mathematics, is invited and encouraged to attend.

Pen to Purpose: Cultivating Writing as a Brand of Professionalism, April 11

Join us on Monday, April 11th, at 6:30 p.m., in-person at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library’s Cotilla Gallery on the 2nd Floor, or online via Zoom for this semester’s final discussion in the Pen to Purpose series.  This author series, founded by Professor Efrat Friedman, is the result of a collaboration between the NSU Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts and the Alvin Sherman Library, and is sponsored by the Circle of Friends. You will not want to miss this compelling conversation with Malcolm Mitchell.

Mitchell was the former wide receiver for the New England Patriots, and the rookie who helped the Patriots win Super Bowl LI. For years Mitchell’s life revolved around his athletic pursuits and he devoted little attention to books or writing. The focus, however, changed while recovering from knee surgeries when Mitchell made time to pursue higher literacy levels and joined a book club. He eventually created the “Share the Magic Foundation” to promote literacy to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and “Read with Malcolm,” which introduces book ownership to students, and works to improve literacy in schools.

Mitchell is also the author of the children’s books, The Magician’s Hat and My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World which encourage a positive association with literacy and the idea that books promote growth and opportunity.

NSU Library’s Circle of Friends is the community support arm for Alvin Sherman Library. The funds raised are used to enhance the library’s services, materials, and programs. With more Friends, we can make an even greater impact, so why not consider becoming a member? For more information about Circle of Friends, please call 954-262-4593, email libdev@nova.edu or visit http://sherman.library.nova.edu/cof.   To become a member or renew, please click here.

Study: Drug Overdoses Rise During COVID-19, Creating ER Disparities

Nova Southeastern University professors conducted a landmark study on drug overdoses in Florida during COVID-19 and found unexpected results regarding disparities by age, ethnicity, and insurance status.

Among their key findings:

  • There were more opioid and stimulant overdoses reported by emergency departments (EDs) during COVID-19 in Florida than before the pandemic.
  • ED visits among those under age 18 were more likely to involve drug overdoses during COVID-19 compared to before COVID-19.
  • ED visits among those on Medicaid or without insurance were more likely to involve drug overdoses during COVID-19 compared to before COVID-19.
  • There were no disparities according to ethnicity or race. Drug overdoses were problematic for all groups during COVID-19.

The interdisciplinary, multi-college, multi-university study was conducted by Professors Timothy F. Page and François Sainfort from NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Professor Julie Jacko from NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, and Professor Weiwei Chen from Kennesaw State (Ga.) University’s Department of Economics, Finance and Quantitative Analysis. Their study of disparities in drug overdoses during COVID-19 was the first research of its kind in the state of Florida.

The researchers compared ED data from April to September 2019 (before the pandemic) to the same time period in 2020 (during the pandemic). While opioid overdose visits increased during the pandemic, visits for other causes declined as activity was restricted during the pandemic.

“This type of research has broad impact in the scientific community. It advances our knowledge of drug abuse during the pandemic and therefore helps us help society,” said Andrew Rosman, Dean of the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

The opioid crisis continues to persist in Florida as well as the United States, fueling thousands of overdose deaths. In 2019, the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control awarded Florida a new Overdose Data to Action grant, which was expanded in the scope of previous drug overdose surveillance to include more non-opioid related overdoses and strengthened funding of prevention efforts.
