CAHSS Dance Major Stephanie Rivera’s Choreography Chosen for the Gala Concert at the American College Dance Association Southeastern Regional Conference

NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is pleased to announce the successful participation of dance students at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) Southeastern Regional Conference, held at Kennesaw State University. During the four-day conference, the dance students presented three original pieces of choreography, performed, attended dance classes, and viewed numerous dance performances.  Senior Dance major Stephanie Rivera’s choreography, “Put Together”, was selected for the Gala Concert, for its “exemplary artist quality,” by a panel of nationally recognized adjudicators, including Ori Floman (International Choreographer, NYU Faculty), Debra Knapp, Ed.D. (Director of Dance, New Mexico State University), and Christina Johnson (Principal Dancer at Dance Theatre of Harlem).

Nine out of the approximately 50 faculty selected works performed at the conference were selected for the Gala. The panel of adjudicators described Rivera’s choreography as a “breath of fresh air” and “serious comedy,” and it was selected to close the show.  Please join CAHSS and the Department of Performing and Visual Arts in celebrating this success.

NSU to Wear Lime Green for Mental Health Awareness Day

Recently, our community has been devastated by natural disasters, incidents at schools, fatal bridge collapses, suicides, pressures of everyday life, and many more events which affect our mental health. Research shows that one in five people struggle with some form of mental health issues, yet less than half will seek any form of treatment due to stigma. Mental health has been linked to physical health and social wellbeing, highlighting the importance of optimal wellness. NSU has a long history of studying and developing innovative programs and curricula for those struggling with mental health issues and concerns, driving innovation coupled with community outreach, research, and direct service programs in multi-disciplinary settings.

NSU’s collaborative approach includes experts from the Brief Therapy Institute, Psychology Services Center, Mailman Segal Center, College of Psychology, and College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Stable Place, and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Today, we have over 30 clinics and programs that specialize in a variety of concerns from therapy, counseling, assessment/testing, family relationships, for children, families, couples, and individuals for all ages.

You are not alone in this journey. NSU is here to help.

We encourage NSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni to wear lime green on Friday, May 10, in recognition of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day and Mental Health Awareness Month. Join our clinics for the 2nd Annual Optimizing Mental Wellness Expo, May 11, 2019. RSVP at: www.nova.edu/dra/events. NSU Dental Fraternity Hosts Seventh Annual Oral Cancer Walk

Members of the NSU Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity presenting the check for $8,000 to the recipient of this year’s oral cancer treatment

The NSU Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity (AO) concluded its seventh annual Oral Cancer 5K Run and Walk-a-Thon by raising $8,000 towards helping a designated oral cancer patient from the NSU oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic.

The annual event held near the end of March on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus served as a kick off for oral cancer awareness month in April. The public raised funds through donations and fees with those participating in the run/walk along with donations from yearly sponsors including Aspen Dental and Henry Schien. In effort to raise awareness for oral cancer AO offered free public oral cancer screenings performed by dental students and oral surgery residents at the event.

AO’s Oral Cancer 5K Run and Walk-a-Thon event was started by a fellow fraternity member who was diagnosed with oral cancer during dental school. Held every year since 2013 the chapter has raised funds, awareness and provided oral cancer screenings to those in attendance.
