Osteopathic Students Feed Broward County

Throughout the holiday season, students at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine have taken time to volunteer with HandsOn Broward in various initiatives. In collaboration with the Jubilee Center, several feeding stations were held where students prepared hot meals for hungry, homeless, and low-income families and cleaned the center.

“The organization’s goal is to reduce hunger in the homeless population by providing daily hot meals,” said second-year student Isabel Bernal. “Everyone was required to wear a mask and gloves at all times, and only one person was allowed in the room at a time to pick up a meal.”

Even after the fall semester concluded, students still managed to make time when they participated in drive-thru food distributions throughout various South Florida cities, including Hollywood, where they gathered more than 300 bags of food for those in need. The students plan to continue collecting food, toy, and clothing donations through the end of December

NSU’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program alumnae, Lauren Tome, M.S., CCC/SLP, was featured in Joe DiMaggio Children’s hospital “Catch the Love this Season” as they celebrate those who have hands that heal and hearts that care.

As part of an inpatient rehabilitation team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, here are some “wow” moments centered on healing I’ve experienced as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Lauren stated her wow moment was “Watching a mom and/or dad safely per oral feed their premature infant for the first time using compensatory strategies and identifying their infant’s cues that I was able to teach them as their Speech-Language Pathologist”.

Fort Myers Student Nurses Association Breast Cancer Walk

The Fort Myers Student Nurses Association (FMSNA) organized and hosted the “Walk Your Way” community service activity with Lee County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The students hosted a closed event to students, faculty and their families on October 11, 2020, in which they walked 2 miles. During the month of October, FMSNA sponsored many fundraising activities, including “Penny Wars” between nursing cohorts, T-shirt sales, and donations. They raised $628 for Breast Cancer Research and Awareness. Our local TV station, WINK News, provided coverage of the event the Wednesday before the walk to inspire others to sponsor their own “Walk Your Way” event.
