Communication Major Rebrands Social Media Presence for PRSA Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter

B.A. in Communication major Chanel Gilcrease was recently recruited by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA FTL) to rebrand its social media presence. Gilcrease was selected as a Summer 2020 intern by the organization and had the opportunity to work on various strategic communications projects, including the revamp of the chapter’s social media presence and its brand identity across its social channels.

“Chanel is a creative dynamo!” said Jennifer Hudson, APR, president of PRSA FTL. “I was so impressed with the way she helped us re-imagine our social media platforms. She asked all the right questions, then used that input and her own research to develop our posting policy, a style guide that beautifully incorporates the PRSA national brand, and a social media strategy she’s actually helping us implement. We are very fortunate to have had such a rising star supporting us!”

Prior to interning with PRSA FTL, Gilcrease served as a communications intern for NSU’s Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts within the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center. In this role, she also gained experience with social media management, marketing, content creation and branding.

“I think the biggest takeaway from these internships was the importance of making connections,” Gilcrease said. “The reason I was offered these internships is because I made a good impression on someone either through conversation or my work, usually both. I wasn’t thinking of what a person could do for me when I made those connections either. I was being genuine or doing good work because that’s how I am. So I’ll keep doing that and I’m sure it’ll get me far.”

Gilcrease recently launched her own marketing company called Instrstellr.co, which specializes in social media management and brand identity development.

“Chanel is a standout student who has a very bright future in strategic communications,” said Whitney Lehmann, Ph.D., APR, assistant professor of communication for the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts and faculty adviser for NSU’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

NSU Welcomes Three New Members to Its Board of Trustees

NSU is proud to announce three new members who have been appointed to its Board of Trustees – and while they may be new to the Board, their involvement with NSU is well established. Rita Case, James Donnelly, and George Platt, III were appointed and confirmed on Monday, October 12 and will serve for a three-year term.

“These new members are champions for NSU who have long been supportive with their time and resources and will be an excellent addition to our Board of Trustees,” said Charles L. Palmer, NSU Board Chair. “They join a notable group and will continue the board’s prestigious mission by guiding the important decisions that support our students, faculty and staff.”

The new board members and their respective accomplishments include:

Rita Case, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rick Case Automotive Group

Rita Case is widely known as a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Rick Case Automotive Group. The Rick Case Automotive Group and the Cases have been recognized with countless awards in business and are a consistent benchmark for success. Recognized as leaders in the auto industry, the Cases have received numerous dealership recognitions including National Dealers of the Year by Sports Illustrated, Time, USA Today magazines, as well as from the American International Automobile Dealers Association and the National Automobile Dealer Association. Within the numerous awards received, the Rick Case Automotive Group recently collected the highly prestigious Honda President’s Award Elite again in 2019 which recognized their ability to not only sell volume but also to uphold top standards of service.

Ms. Case also contributes to the community on a philanthropic level and is a supporter of the American Heart Association, Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Cleveland Clinic Florida, EASE Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Holy Cross Hospital, Humane Society of Broward County, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Museum of Discovery and Science, Nova Southeastern University, University of Miami Health System, Women in Distress, and many others.

She is a member of NSU’s Fellows Society at the Diamond Shark level. Ms. Case and her late husband Rick Case were also the recipients of NSU’s 2019 Excellence in Community Service Award, which recognizes superior professional engagement activities in the community. The NSU Arena was renamed the “Rick Case Arena” in 2017 to honor the family for their years of commitment to the University. In 2019, Ms. Case was inducted as part of the 30th class of the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame at the Huizenga School of Business & Entrepreneurship, alongside Rob Kornahrens and Arlene Pecora.

Recently NSU and the greater South Florida community lost a champion, Rita’s husband Rick Case. Among the many areas of involvement, Rick was very large presence at NSU. He provided support both financially and with his time serving on several committees as well as the Board of Trustees. NSU is thrilled that Mrs. Case will be continuing their family’s legacy at NSU by agreeing to be a member of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine Charter Class 100% Pass Rate Step 1 Exam

The results are in! The Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine’s (NSU MD) Charter Class had a 100% pass rate on their United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 on their first attempt, exceeding national average scores. The college is led by Dean Johannes Vieweg who had a special message for the students, “You work so hard to make a good income and build a great career, but you do it for yourself. That’s not life. You go out and seek those people who need your help and make their lives better. You become THE leader who can absorb all that negativity surrounding us. You become THAT person who inspires, equips, and encourages those around you to collectively pursue something bigger than yourself. And when you realize that you have changed someone’s life and because of you, this person becomes a different, better human being, THAT is the day when you live.”

The mission and vision of the college aligns with the seven core values the faculty, staff, and students integrate through innovation in education. Executive Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Paula S. Wales, Ed.D. had a openhearted message to the college and charter class, “I am so proud of our charter class, the faculty who designed the curriculum and taught them, the staff who helped support the charter class every step of the way, the university for supporting our growing college, and the Dean for leading us through another milestone”. NSU MD is proud to congratulate the charter class students.
