Halmos Undergraduate and Faculty Present at the American Astronomical Society

This June, Halmos faculty member Stefan Kautsch, Ph.D. and marine biology major and physics minor Kyle Hansotia virtually presented at the 236th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS). Kyle and Dr. Kautsch presented the concept of mass distribution in space and how to instruct students on the concept. In addition to the presentation, Dr. Kautsch served as a judge for the conference’s

Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Student Awards. This award is for an achievement in astronomical research made by research students. The key factor in deciding the recipient will be that the work contributes to the advancement of the science of astronomy. The award consists of the Chambliss medal.

The AAS was established in 1899 and based in Washington, DC. The membership of about 7,700 consists of individuals whose research and educational interests lie within the broad spectrum of subjects now comprising the astronomical sciences. The society is the publisher of the Sky & Telescope magazine, as well as several scientific journals.

 

 

Fischler to Host Six Week Facebook Live Series Parenting During a Pandemic, Aug. 3

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice will be hosting a six week Facebook Live series called, Parenting During a Pandemic, beginning June 29th at 7:00 p.m. The first episode will focus on educational alternatives to traditional schooling. The series will be hosted by, Dr. Maribel Del Rio-Roberts.

CAHSS to Host Virtual workshop “Civil Liberties, Black Lives Matter, and National Security”, July 9

The Department of History and Political Science (DHPS) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites you to a virtual workshop, “Civil Liberties, Black Lives Matter, and National Security,” on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 7:00pm. Charles Zelden, Ph.D., professor in DHPS will lead the workshop with Aprille McIntosh, 2020 graduate of the program in National Security Affairs and International Relations. They will discuss our freedoms as Americans, racial justice, and national security. You will also learn about the master’s program in National Security Affairs and International Relations.

Zelden is a regular commentator on politics and current events for local media outlets.  He has provided extensive commentary and analysis of Presidential elections and midterm elections on TV, radio, and print. His areas of scholarship include American Legal and Constitutional History; Civil Rights, Voting Rights, and Election Law; and the Judicial Process.

Summer 2020 Dollar$ and $ense Newsletter Now Available

Enrollment and Student Services (ESS) has published the Summer 2020 issue of the Dollar$ and $ense student newsletter. This issue provides students with information relating to 2020-2021 academic year updates, answers to questions regarding financial aid grants disbursed under the Federal CARES Act, and more.

Education Alum Named Provost and Vice President of Instruction at the Community College of Baltimore County

Joaquin Martinez. Ph.D., graduate of NSU’s Fischer College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, has been named Provost and Vice President of Instruction at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). He will join CCCB on July 1, 2020.

Martinez has held a high-level leadership position at Miami Dade College (MDC). He currently serves as the district Vice Provost, with oversight for institutional effectiveness across all eight Miami Dade College (MDC) campuses. Prior to his current role, Martinez also held leadership positions at MDC for the past ten years, which include time as President of two MDC campuses, Wolfson and Hialeah, Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, Associate Provost of Student Achievement; and Dean of Faculty and Student Services, Martinez was the founding Director of the School of Education at Albizu University, a comprehensive university offering doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees that emphasized service to diverse communities, with campuses Puerto Rico and Miami.

Dr. Martinez earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Modern Languages from Middlebury College, in Vermont. He earned his Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Administration and Supervision at NSU’s Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice and his Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Research Methodology at Florida Atlantic University. He is also a past fellow of the American Association of Community Colleges’ National Community College Hispanic Council program at California State University, Long Beach.

 

CAHSS Faculty Co-authors Op-Ed “George Floyd: The Eyes of the World are Watching Now” in Daily Maverick

Mary Hope Schwoebel, Ph.D. faculty in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) co-authored an Op-Ed with Erin McCandless, Ph.D. The op-ed entitled, “George Floyd: The Eyes of the World are Watching Now, “was published on June 8, 2020, in the Daily Maverick, a South African online newspaper.

Schwoebel’s areas of interest include peacebuilding and state building, peacebuilding and development, gender and conflict, culture and conflict, and the interactions between religious and indigenous systems of governance and conflict resolution and international interventions. She teaches such classes as Facilitation, Culture and Conflict: Cross-cultural Perspectives, and Practicum I.

CAHSS Graduate SGA Hosts Virtual Conference “Healing the Divide: A Talk on African Americans and Race Relations

On Thursday, June 11, 2020 from 11:00am-7:00pm, the Graduate Student Government Association (SGA) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), hosted a virtual conference titled, Healing the Divide: A Talk on African Americans and Race Relations.

Facilitated by the SGA, the conference fostered lively discussion and exchange of ideas. It featured the following speakers and topics:
