Dateline Health Episode Featuring Osteopathic Medicine Faculty Duo Wins Telly Gold Award

Dateline Health, NSU’s public service television show hosted by Frederick Lippman, R.Ph., Ed.D., chancellor, Health Professions Division, special projects, won the People’s Telly Gold prize in the 41st Annual Telly Awards competition for the episode “Coronavirus Update.” Being selected as a Gold Telly winner is the standard bearer of excellence in the industry.

“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as a recipient of the People’s Telly Gold award in such a competitive industry,” said Rita Silverman, M.P.S., Dateline Health executive producer. “I have produced many episodes with topics close to my heart during the past 15 years. However, being able to raise awareness and provide an unbiased and informative presentation about COVID-19 in such a timely manner to the public was a win in itself.”

The award-winning episode was taped on February 3 when there were only 11 reported cases in the United States. The episode aired on February 17—two weeks before the first confirmed cases in Florida were reported.

Lippman, who determines the topics discussed on Dateline Health, is innately inquisitive about emerging health concerns, techniques, and innovations. Consequently, when he learned in mid-January that COVID-19 had reached the United States, he decided to tape a segment to enlighten the public. Two faculty experts within the KPCOM were then solicited to share their insights—Bindu Mayi, Ph.D., M.Sc., professor of microbiology, and Naushira Pandya, M.D., CMD, FACP, professor and chair of the Department of Geriatrics.

“This is what drives us every day to give our best—the desire to educate our community on infectious disease threats and how our citizens can prevent getting infected,” said Mayi, who has previously appeared on Dateline Health to discuss the Zika virus, sepsis, and flesh-eating bacteria. “It is gratifying and immensely satisfying that Dr. Lippman recognized the enormity of COVID-19 as it was just beginning to unfold.”

Dateline Health—a six-time Telly Award recipient—is a 30-minute program dedicated to promoting the community’s overall health and well-being. The Telly Awards honor high-caliber stories created by the world’s best agencies, production companies, animation studios, television stations, and more.

“What the Dateline Health episode underscored was not only an early awareness of the potentially serious impact of COVID-19 in the United States and worldwide, but also the need for preventive measures at a community and health care level,” Pandya explained. “It is very important that we continue to keep the quality of compassionate patient care and safety in the forefront.”

Welcome to the Family: NSU Sharks Sign Brinson to 2020-21 Roster

Head coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry and the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball staff are excited to announce the signing of Patricia “Pistol” Brinson, a 5-4 freshman point guard from Central Christian High School in Sharpsburg, Ga.

“Pistol is a scoring point guard who produces on both ends of the court,” explained Freeland-Curry. “She has been a vocal leader for Central Christian and helped them win a lot of championships. Pistol is crafty and creates shots for herself and teammates easily. This season, Pistol showed a willingness to get out of her comfort zone to become a strong scoring threat from the point guard position. Defensively, she pressures the ball well and anticipates off the ball to make defensive plays.”

During her senior season at Central Christian, Brinson averaged 21.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 5.0 steals per game while recording a 56 percent shooting percentage from the field and 35 percent from deep. She led her team to a 29-7 overall record, and ultimately the program’s third DI-A Georgia State Championship title.

Education Alum Named “Junior College Adjunct Educator of the Year”

Anthony Price, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice (FCE&SCJ), was named the Junior College Adjunct Educator of the Year for the Lake Country Region, by the President of Georgia Military College. He was recognized for outstanding achievement, exceptional performance, and innovative contributions to the teaching profession at Georgia Military College during the academic year 2019-2020.

Price is a retired educator who served more than 35 years in K-12 education.  He has had unique and varied experiences in his career, spanning time in New York, Virginia and Georgia.   While Principal at Hilsman Middle School in Clarke County, Georgia, the school received the Governor’s Silver Award. Only 1 of 22 schools at that time received the prestigious award, which recognized students who met or exceeded standards in all four content areas in a school that was considered high poverty with high minority enrollment. He also started a Career Center, which was the first JROTC program for middle school students in conjunction with the high school and led the school’s first authorization for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Under his tenure, Cedar Shoals High School, a high poverty school in Athens, Georgia, was named by the Washington Post High School Challenge Index as being among the top 8% in the nation out of 22,000 high schools. Additionally, the school was also selected for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Program in conjunction with Piedmont College. The Georgia Department of Education named the school an “AP Honor School” because of the access and performance of an underserved population. He also created and initiated the first ninth grade academy at the high school and developed an extensive summer companion program for rising ninth grade students to ease the transitional difficulties of leaving middle school and entering the ninth grade.  Finally, Price’s leadership led to the school’s authorization to become an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program for ninth and tenth graders.

He earned his Doctor of Education in 2006. Price also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the educational leadership program at FCE&SCJ. He is married to FCE&SCJ’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner, Noris Price.
