NSU Black Law Student Association to Hold Justice Walkathon, June 12

On behalf of NSU BLSA, a BLSA Statement Release has been posted on the BLSA webpage that highlights the tragic deaths that have taken place, due to systemic racism and police brutality. We urge our community to stand with us in unity during these times, as we fight for equal justice, and end systemic oppression.

NSU BLSA will be holding a virtual justice walkathon (5k) on June 12, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $10 to join, and all proceeds will go towards funding the BLSA competitions team. We are equipping young black men and women with the necessary skills and knowledge they need to enter the legal workforce to battle injustice.

Participants will be able to join the event via Nike Run Club App.

Additionally, BLSA will be selling shirts that read “Black Skin Is NOT A Crime” throughout the school year and all proceeds will be given to a non-profit organization whose goal is to end police brutality.

We hope that our NSU Law family will stand with us and support our fundraiser.

Please see the attachments and link below to register for a shirt.

The KPCOM’s International Medical Outreach Club (IMOC) Executive Board displayed its compassion by donating $5,000 to the Broward Health Foundation. The funds were donated to provide COVID-19-related support in the Broward County community.

“Although our club is typically internationally minded, the IMOC Executive Board recognized the need to provide assistance right here in our community, and this was the best way we could think to make a difference,” said second-year student Neil R. Sood, IMOC president. “This donation will be instrumental in protecting frontline health care providers, as well as making sure each patient gets the best care possible.”

CAHSS Faculty Authors Book, The Public Relations Writer’s Handbook

Whitney Lehmann, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Writing and Communication in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), has written a book, The Public Relations Writer’s Handbook, published by Routledge.

“I have taught Public Relations Writing since 2013 during my time as a doctoral student at the University of Miami. While I love the text that I previously used for the course, it was published in 2009,” Lehmann said. She wanted to create an updated work for PR students, practitioners, and educators that covered digital/social media. She indicated that her journalism experience was valuable in learning how to write as a PR practitioner and how to best pitch stories to the media.

“Learning the fundamentals of journalistic writing, in my opinion, is key to understanding and succeeding at writing for public relations,” she said.

Lehmann’s book is divided by topic, with the media relations section covering how to create press releases, pitch stories, and create media kits. The storytelling section covers news and feature writing, interviewing and creating bio sketches. A digital media section outlines writing for emails, the internet, and social media. The remaining sections cover business/executive communications and writing for events.

Lehmann plans to use the book in her fall Public Relations Writing class, and said the book is under consideration for use at the University of Miami’s School of Communication, where she earned an M.A. in Journalism and a Ph.D. in Communication.

“I think it would be so cool to have my alma mater adopt the book,” Lehmann said.

Although social media is constantly evolving, Lehmann emphasized the importance of constructing content with a conversational tone that engages the needs/wants of the audience. Social media will be the focus of her next book, Let’s Get Social: Social Media Writing and Strategy. She was a finalist for the 2018 Communicator of the Year by the Public Relations Society of America Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter. In 2019, the chapter named the Department of Writing and Communication as its Department of the Year for Lehmann’s work establishing and advising the NSU chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. She teaches courses such as Mass Media, Public Relations Campaigns, and Social Media Theory and Practice.

A Message from President Hanbury on Recent Events

This past Sunday, a peaceful protest began, as all people in this country have a right to do. Although the protest began peacefully in the early afternoon, by evening the peaceful protest turned unruly in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Even though we experienced some property damage, everyone is safe. Since these protests occurred throughout the nation, it is clear that meaningful dialogue and justice reform needs to be implemented and not just discussed.

As we are all aware, Diversity stands as one of NSU’s eight Core Values. As a minority-majority university, I feel the pain of our united family. Violence is never the answer. While there is a lot of anger and frustration, there must also be compassion, understanding, and the desire to listen to each other with mutual respect.

We do need to unite, in the spirit of all of NSU’s Core Values, and find peaceful and substantive solutions.

Take care, be peaceful, and be safe.

Sharks Shine Academically with Program-Best Winter Semester to Cap Record-Setting Year

The winter semester provided more evidence that nothing can stop a determined Shark, as NSU student-athletes not only extended the program’s gold-standard academic tradition, but showed perseverance in excelling at record levels in spite of this semester’s obstacles. The Sharks produced a program-wide 3.40 grade point average for the program’s highest winter semester mark, coupling with the fall’s 3.27 to earn the highest annual departmental GPA on record at 3.33.

Of NSU’s 17 NCAA Division II intercollegiate programs, 16 squads posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA, with 80 percent of student-athletes individually exceeding a 3.0. Closing out the 2019-20 academic year with a perfect semester, a program-record 38 student-athletes garnered a 4.00 GPA and 59 Shark student-athletes graduated during the 2019-20 academic year. There were 90 student-athletes who earned a spot on the NSU Director’s List above a 3.80 GPA, while 223 Sharks were named Scholar Athletes with a GPA of 3.25 or better.

“While this semester proved to be unusual and filled with unexpected challenges, it should come as no surprise that our Shark student-athletes again demonstrated their determination and resilience with their record-setting academic performances,” Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services and Student-Athlete Support Rachel Fineberg said. “I am so proud of each and every one of our student-athletes for their commitment to academic excellence. Congratulations to our recent Shark graduates! We look forward to the day that we can welcome you home and celebrate with you and your loved ones.”

The Shark leaders in the winter hailed from women’s swimming with an NSU-high 3.68 GPA for a new program semester-best, en route to a new top annual GPA. Taking the lead spot for the fifth consecutive semester, the men’s soccer team also posted its best academic year to date thanks to a 3.56 winter semester GPA that again paced all men’s programs.

Conflict Analysis and Resolution Alumna is Guest Services Manager for Spirit Airlines in Baltimore

Marina Stonewall, M.S., PMP,

Marina Stonewall, M.S., PMP, a 2006 graduate of the master’s program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), is Guest Services Manager for Spirit Airlines at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. The Guest Services Manager supervises, monitors, and directs station personnel. Prior to her current position, Stonewall was Luggage Resolution Manager for Spirit Airlines in Miramar.

Of her education at NSU, Stonewall indicated: “I am using my degree as a an employee of Spirit Airlines as a skill set to coach my team in managing conflict situations between team members or between team members and the general public working.   I started as the Manager of Luggage Resolution in Miramar, FL before moving to Maryland for the Guest Services Manager role at BWI airport; the skills can be used universally across various business sectors. As an example, since graduation I have worked as a federal contractor at the Pentagon, for a non-profit, and now an airline.  I am also a business owner, M Power Fitness, LLC, which allows me the opportunity to use negotiation skills when speaking with potential clients.  The ability to use the resources I have learned as a student at NSU towards the things I love – travel and fitness – has been the best part of recognizing what I wanted to be when I grew up.”

In addition to her degree from NSU, Stonewall earned a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Montevallo, and PMP (Project Management Professional) from the Project Management Institute.
