CAHSS Faculty participates on Panel at Broward College North Campus

Ransford Edwards, Ph.D

Ransford Edwards, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) was a participant on a panel, “Green New Deal: What it is and is Not,” held at Broward College North Campus.

Edwards’ regional areas of focus are the Caribbean and Latin America. His work appears in Class, Race, and Corporate Power and he has been a reviewer for the journal Disasters. His teaching interests include quantitative research methods, political economy, and political film and fiction. He is the faculty advisor for NSU’s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, National Political Science Honor Society.

CAHSS Faculty served as Panelist for Broward County Cultural Division’s 2021 Cultural Diversity Program

Bill Adams, D.M.A., faculty in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), served as a panelist for Broward County Cultural Division’s 2021 Cultural Diversity Program. To represent the diversity of people living in Broward County, the grant program is designed to support events such as Rhythms of Africa (Embrace Music Foundation), Danceport Ballroom Dancing (CID-UNESCO), Diwali Festival of Lights (Indian Regional and Cultural Center of Florida), and We Drum in Peace (Japan Arts). The grant panel will review grant requests totaling $167,000 and recommend funding these organizations to the Broward County Commissioners.

As an arts administrator, Adams serves on panels, which recommend funding for Broward Cultural Division’s Cultural Investment Program, the Cultural Diversity Program, and the Cultural Tourism Program. He has been the artistic director of the Renaissance City Men’s and Women’s Choirs as well as South Florida Chorale Arts, Inc.

CAHSS Alum is Advisor at Harold Washington College-City Colleges of Chicago

Jennifer Vogel, M.S.

Jennifer Vogel, M.S., a 2014 graduate of the College Student Affairs program in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), is a College Advisor in the Academic Advising Office at Harold Washington College, a part of the City Colleges of Chicago. In this position, she coordinates New Student Orientation and First Year Experience programs while advising students on academic, career, and transfer goals.

Previously Vogel was the Student Services Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After graduating from NSU, she was the Athletic Academic Coordinator at NSU.  While she was a student, she was a graduate assistant for Special Events and Projects at NSU. In addition to her NSU degree, Vogel has a B.A. in History from the University of Florida.

Education Alum Publishes Second Math Book

Alvin Haywood, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham, S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, published his second book, Students Loving Math: What’s Reading Got to Do With It?.

Haywood was born in Vallejo, California, and attended public schools there from kindergarten through the community college level. Upon transferring to San Jose State University (CA), received undergraduate degrees in social work and psychology, a master’s degree in education, and both teaching and administrative credentials. After retirement from 34 years of elementary and middle school teaching and overcoming a bout with cancer, Dr. Haywood enrolled in FCE&SCJ’s doctorate program. He graduated in 2015.

Last year, he authored his first book, Cultivating Early Reading Development: Reaping the Benefits of School Success.

NSU Attends Broward County Public Schools Caliber Awards

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education & School of Criminal Justice (FCE&SCJ) attended the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Caliber Awards ceremony at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center on Thursday, January 16, 2020. The annual event recognizes and celebrates BCPS outstanding Teachers, Principals, Assistant Principals, and School-Related/District Employees, which included FCE&SCJ alumna, Dr. Miranti Murphy, from Boulevard Heights Elementary School, in the Teacher of The Year category.

FCE&SCJ was a platinum sponsor of the event and awarded a tuition discount to the four winners and twelve runners-up if they enroll at the college.  Dr. Kenneth Rockensies, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at FCE&SCJ presented and promoted the Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice to over 1,300 attendees. Dr. Leonard Jacobskind, Director of Graduate Admissions at FCE&SCJ, was interviewed by the BCPS to discuss NSU’s longstanding support of the Caliber Awards. Additionally, FCE&SCJ Drs. Troy Robinson, Angie Su, Jia Borror, Michael Gaffley, Linda Lopez, and Ms. Kristin Bobineaux were in attendance.

 

 

Meet Jim Rooney at the Alvin Sherman Library

His book “A Different Way to Win: Dan Rooney’s Story from the Super Bowl to the Rooney Rule” details his father’s long and successful career in sports, business and philanthropy as told through stories of those who worked alongside him. Released in November 2019, the book quickly became an Amazon Best Seller and was selected by President Obama to be one of 38 on his 2019 Favorite Book List.

NSU Host 2020 Forum of Florida Alumni Associations Conference

The office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving hosted the 2020 Forum of Florida Alumni Associations at Nova Southeastern University on Thursday, January 9 and Friday, January 10. FFAA is a state-wide yearly conference, where Alumni Relations and Annual Giving professionals meet, share insights, new ideas, and learn from industry experts.

The NSU Alumni Relations and Annual Giving team hosted eight informative sessions with fundraising professionals and alumni relations experts at the University Center Club Room and the Museum Plaza building. They offered walking tours of our state-of-the-art Davie campus, hosted an entertaining happy hour at Rooftop on Las Olas Boulevard, and shared lunch at the NSU Art Museum in Downtown Fort Lauderdale.

NSU Celebrates Black History Month: All that Jazz Art Exhibition

“All That Jazz” features more than 20 black-and-white photographs taken by William P. Gottlieb of eminent jazz musicians and singers, such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. The exhibition also includes colorful photographic works by Pete Turner featured on vintage jazz album covers.

Criminal Justice Professor Co-Authors Two Books

Jennifer Allen, Ph.D

Jennifer Allen, Ph.D, Professor at NSU’s Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, has coauthored two books, The SAGE Guide to Writing in Policing: Report Writing Essentials and The SAGE Guide to Writing in Corrections.

 Focusing on building confident report writers across the field of policing, The SAGE Guide to Writing in Policing: Report Writing Essentials, trains students in a wide array of concepts, best practices and writing skills that can be applied both academically and professionally. Conversely, The SAGE Guide to Writing in Corrections, focuses on writing skills specific to the correctional profession, while giving students a deeper understanding of technical and academic writing concepts and information literacy.

Allen has been published in the areas of restorative justice, juvenile delinquency and justice, youth programming, police crime, and police administration and ethics. Additionally, Allen is also the coauthor of The SAGE Guide to Writing in Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Administration: A Service Quality Approach, and Juvenile Justice: A Guide to Theory, Policy, and Practice.
