NSU Participates in United Way of Broward County’s 27th Annual Day of Caring

Recently, NSU proudly participated in United Way of Broward County’s 27th Annual Day of Caring event by packing 300,000 meals alongside 500 fellow volunteers from various organizations. The packaged meals were delivered to 25 food banks across the county, to help to offset the need among food insecure families. In commemoration of UWBC’s 80th Anniversary participants also engaged in a t-shirt contest where the team with the best design was recognized at the event.  We are proud to announce that NSU’s t-shirt designed by the Office of Publications and Creative Services brought home the winning prize. CAHSS Faculty Present at the 2019 Feminisms and Rhetorics Conference

Writing and Communication Center (WCC) Faculty Coordinators, Kelly Concannon (College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Associate Professor of Writing) and Janine Morris (CAHSS Assistant Professor of Writing), presented at the 2019 Feminisms and Rhetorics conference at James Madison University, November 13-16, 2019. Their presentation, “Mindful Mentorship, Self-Care, & Fostering Graduate Student Well-Being in the Writing Center,” focuses on a month-long mindfulness project the two conducted in fall 2018 with CAHSS Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media Master’s student Nicole Chavannes and alumna Veronica Diaz (both WCC graduate assistant coordinators at the time).

Their presentation focused on the effects of a four-week project Concannon, Morris, Chavannes, and Diaz undertook to examine how performing self-care and mindfulness practices affected mentorship and leadership positions. The presentation concluded with acknowledging the benefits and challenges of practicing mindfulness and self-care as mentors and provided attendees with strategies to enact in their own writing centers.

Concannon stated, “The conference allowed us to share our experiences cultivating mindfulness in the writing and communication center and to create collaborations with faculty and students who were additionally invested in feminist practices.”

The mindfulness project is also the focus of a co-written article by Concannon, Morris Chavannes, and Diaz that will appear in a forthcoming issue of WLN: A Journal of Writing Center Scholarship.

CAHSS and Alvin Sherman Library Host National History Day Workshops

The Center for the Humanities in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), in collaboration with the Department of History and Political Science (DHPS), and the Alvin Sherman Library, hosted the National History Day Workshops for 8th to 12th grade students. Students learned about various history topics from DHPS faculty, and about research from librarians in the Alvin Sherman Library.

David Kilroy, Ph.D., Interim Chair of DHPS enthusiastically said,

“It was a wonderful event.  Several faculty members in the Department of History and Political Science spent the best part of two hours brainstorming with the students.  The theme for this year’s National History Day project is ‘Breaking Barriers’ and the variety of topics among the students who came was pretty wide. Fortunately the range of our faculty’s expertize enabled us to provide assistance for all those who attended.  I think the students went away happy and motivated.”

Alvin Sherman librarians Charlene Cain and Lisa Ellis taught students about research. The library said of the event: “The Alvin Sherman Library was pleased to collaborate with NSU’s Department of History and Political Science for the National History Day event. Librarians engaged students with their research topics by showing them how to locate primary sources and utilize all of the resources available to them through our joint-use library. Students were encouraged to use our library’s Ask A Librarian services and seemed very excited to find sources for their topics.”

According to Andrea Shaw Nevins, Ph.D, Director of the Center for the Humanities, and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs in CAHSS, “Several parents expressed to me appreciation that their students had this opportunity to work with NSU faculty and staff. We hope to continue this event as part of the various series offered by the Center.

Wishing You Love, Peace and Joy

To our NSU family:

At this special time of year, we want to express our sincere appreciation for belonging to a community of people who are passionate about keeping NSU student-centered and focused on academic excellence. Together, we are helping drive NSU forward in exciting and innovative ways.

We hope you have a safe and joyous holiday season. Hug your loved ones, make new memories, and take some time to rest and recharge. We wish you nothing but the best as you embark on 2020.

Sharks Spread Joy to the Rick and Rita Case Boys & Girls Club

Nearing the end of the holiday season with the community in mind, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) led the way as the NSU Athletics Department collected and donated more than 100 toys to the children at the Rick & Rita Case Boys and Girls Club. Earlier this week, the men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to the club to deliver the toys, spending about an hour chatting and playing with the kids.

Here is what a couple of the NSU student-athletes had to say about their experience:

Sarah Kelly – Women’s Basketball
“It was an awesome experience to actually meet the kids we collected the toys for. Seeing how excited they were that we were there was priceless!”

Mike Moore – Men’s Basketball
“It was a great experience to be able to give back to the community and see how much of an impact we can make in a child’s life. It excited me, and gave me a warm feeling to see them all so happy. One kid I will remember is Jose. The minute I walked in, he came straight up to me and we instantly connected. Before we passed out the gifts, he asked for the soccer ball so I made sure to save it just for him. We spent the rest of the time together playing games and having fun.”

Felipe Souza – Men’s Basketball
“When I was in middle school, I was a part of the Boys & Girls Club! Coming back as a college athlete, and seeing how much of an impact we made, was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.”

Jordan Tully – Women’s Basketball
“Overall it was an awesome experience! Too often we get wrapped up in our own lives so it was nice to spend time in our community, specifically at the Boys and Girls Club. The kids were awesome and hopefully we can work something out so they can not only meet us but come support us at our home games.”
