Plan Ahead, Get a Jump on the 2024 Election

The 2020 presidential elections saw the highest voter turnout since 1900. Will this year’s candidates achieve the same level of support when voters go to the polls on November 5?  According to Charles Zelden, a professor of history and politics with NSU’s Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, people will do more than just pick a new president – they will shape the future of a nation.

“Harris and Trump offer more than mere policy differences. They each represent distinct and contrasting conceptions of our nation — of its structure, functions, and place in the  world. Our choices in this election will determine the future that we get — not just for the next four years, but potentially for a generation,” said Zelden, who specializes in voting rights, election law, civil rights, and judicial politics.

So, what can you do to participate in this year’s once-in-a-lifetime election? Professor Zelden offers these suggestions.

1. Participate. The choices made in this election are important, let your voice be included in the nationwide dialogue over our future.
2. Pick your issues. Think about what’s important to you, maybe it’s the economy or health care.
3. Talk to others. This is a collective choice we’re making in the presidential election.

4. Have faith in the democratic process of elections. Accept the outcome with as much good grace as you can.

As the election approaches, it is also important to plan ahead of time. Check your voter registration status. Consider options for early voting. Doublecheck your polling location as recent weather may have changed where you vote.  Understand what forms of voter ID and other documents you may need.  Above all, take advantage of the right to vote.

Sharks Men’s, Women’s Basketball Defeat Barry University

Shane Hunter led the second-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks men’s basketball team to victory over Barry University.

Led by a double-double (26 points, 14 rebounds) from Shane Hunter, the second-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks men’s basketball team defeated the Barry University Buccaneers 88-80 on Wednesday night, Feb. 21, at the Rick Case Arena.

The victory marks the Sharks’ 56th consecutive home win, dating back to February 2020.

The Sharks improved to 21-2 overall and 15-2 in the Sunshine State Conference. They’ve won 13 consecutive games against the Buccaneers, dating back to November 2018.

The women’s basketball team has been on a run of its own, taking down the Barry Buccaneers 89-55 at the Rick Case Arena on Wednesday afternoon and pushing their win streak to 19 consecutive games. The women are 21-3 overall and 16-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.

No. 1 Men’s Basketball Team Continues its Winning Ways

Six Sharks scored in double figures, as top-ranked Nova Southeastern defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 112-89 in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday evening from the Rick Case Arena.

Isaiah Fuller and GianFranco Grafals each scored 24 points, while Shane Hunter (20), MJ Iraldi (15), Trey Doomes (14) and Ryker Cisarik (12) scored in double figures.

No. 1 Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball won its 43rd consecutive game, 43rd straight Sunshine State Conference game and 48th consecutive contest at the Rick Case Arena.

Men’s Basketball Continues Streak, Celebrates Success

The Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball team won their 45th straight home game on Wednesday evening from the Rick Case Arena. The Sharks defeated the Southeastern University Fire 96-53.

Prior to the game, NSU Athletics honored the 2022-23 Men’s Basketball National Championship team with the presentation of their championship rings and banner unveiling. In the game, the Sharks were led by four double-digit efforts from Shane Hunter (16), MJ Iraldi (14), GianFranco Grafals (14 points), and Isaiah Fuller (13).

Sharks Women’s and Men’s Basketball Are Back!

The Women’s Basketball team will kick off their 2023-2024 campaign at home on November 10 at noon against Auburn Montgomery which will be followed by the annual Homecoming Game Saturday, November 11 at noon as the Women’s basketball team takes on the University of Montevallo. Fans are encouraged to White out the Tank and students will receive a limited belt bag giveaway.

The reigning 2022-23 National Championship Men’s Basketball team will have their home opener against Southeastern University on Wednesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. Join various Sharks Partners for a pregame tailgate starting at 5 p.m. followed by a pregame ring ceremony and a Banner Unveiling to commemorate the 2022-23 Men’s Basketball National Championship. Continue the Championship Celebration at halftime as we honor the 2022-23 Women’s Swimming and 2022-23 Men’s Golf National Championships. Fans are encouraged to White out the Tank and students will receive a limited Hungry For More Rally Towel.

NSU Assesses Newly Drafted Florida Panther Players

HHP Faculty, students, and alumni, recently provided the NHL’s Florida Panthers Hockey Club with preseason physical assessments of newly drafted players.

This year, the Florida Panthers asked the Department of Health and Human Performance to assist the Florida Panthers with physical assessments for newly drafted players.

Students and alumni of the sports science (M.S.) and exercise and sport science (B.S) programs aided Tobin Silver, Ph.D., professor, and Corey Peacock, Ph.D., professor, and the Florida Panthers’ Sports Performance team in evaluating newly drafted hockey players.

The students had a chance to provide comprehensive performance assessments including Wingate testing, VO2 max testing, postural assessments, and upper body strength. They were able to provide these assessments while being provided direction by Mike Joyce, Florida Panthers head strength and conditioning coach, Tim Wittenauer, Florida Panthers director of sports performance & rehabilitation, and Chris McLellan, Ph.D.,  Florida Panthers vice president of sports performance. Silver and Peacock have provided this opportunity to students for 11 consecutive seasons.

Emma Krause, M.S. graduate student, said, “I was extremely thankful for the opportunity to learn from Tim, Mike, and McLellan. They guided us through their assessment philosophy and allowed us students to learn through an unforgettable interactive experience.” Additionally, the students and staff were able to review the data and understand the application of performance testing.

Talia Thompson, M.S. graduate student, said, “It was great getting to work alongside professionals in the field. Hands-on experience is the best way to apply what we have learned in the classroom, and I am thankful to have had this opportunity to gain experience in professional sports.”

Men’s Golf Team Wins NCAA Division II National Championship

WARREN, Ohio – For the third time in program history, the Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Golf team has won the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Sharks defeated Oklahoma Christian 3-2 in the final round of match play from the Avalon Lakes Golf Course.
NSU Men’s Golf previously has won the National Championship in 2012 and 2015. The men’s golf national title is the third NCAA Division II National Championship that NSU has won during the 2022-23 season, joining the Women’s Swimming and Men’s Basketball programs. The national championship is the 11th team national championship in Nova Southeastern University athletics history.

After trailing by just one-stroke after eight holes, Josep Serra recorded a par on nine, while Oklahoma Christian’s Armijo double-bogeyed the hole, giving Serra the lead. Serra maintained his advantage throughout the back-nine, earning a one stroke victory for the first NSU point.
Michael Hay provided a steady performance throughout the championship match, entering the back-nine tied with OCU’s Pulcini. With just two holes remaining, Hay approached the tee box on 17 trailing by two strokes. Hay, unbothered by the pressure, easily parred 17 before finishing off an incredible birdie putt on 18 to seal the second match point for the Sharks, putting NSU at the cusp of the title.

Will O’Neill’s match-up didn’t need the same level of dramatics as Hay’s contest. O’Neill concluded his collegiate career in dominating fashion. After the front-nine, O’Neill led by three strokes but after the 12th hole, O’Neill’s lead reached nine strokes and he led by as many as 17. O’Neill clinched the third and decisive point in the Sharks national championship victory, finishing off NSU Men’s Golf third national title.
