NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Receives $1.6 Million Gift from The Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant Foundation

Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale received a $1.6 million gift from The Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant Foundation to endow an art curator position and provide funds for the Museum’s youth education programs. The impact of this gift to the Museum will be magnified thanks to NSU’s newly established endowment challenge that matches interest on all new endowments up to 5% through 2025. (NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is a division of Nova Southeastern University.) The Museum has initiated a nationwide search to fill the curatorial role.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Nancy Bryant and Jerry Taylor for this outstanding gift, especially during these challenging times, and in recognition of their support the position will be named the Bryant-Taylor Curator,” states Francie Bishop Good, chair of the Museum’s Board of Governors.

“We are deeply appreciative of Nancy and Jerry’s major gift to NSU Art Museum. Once again, they have led the way in support of the Museum by being the first to contribute to the Museum’s new endowment challenge,” said Dr. George L. Hanbury II, president of Nova Southeastern University.

“Nancy and Jerry have repeatedly demonstrated their strategic support of the Museum, and in 2015, they provided the initial funding to launch our Museum on the Move program, which has provided thousands of Broward County School students with free field trips to tour the Museum’s exhibitions,” states Bonnie Clearwater, the Museum’s director and chief curator. “This new strategic gift once again demonstrates the couple’s foresight and it will help make it possible for the Museum to continue organizing compelling exhibitions, build an exceptional art collection and provide high caliber educational programming.”

Nancy Bryant stated, “Beginning with the Museum on the Move program that we helped fund, the Museum has opened its doors to school children in a meaningful new way; it started a trajectory that perfectly fits our foundation’s mission.  Our new grant supports an additional curator to ensure that the Museum plays a significant role in increasing Broward County students’ academic performance and also allows the Museum to focus on its future exhibitions and offerings for art lovers at all levels.  We encourage more donors to join us and help the Museum open its doors wider.”

NSU Welcomes Three New Members to Its Board of Trustees

NSU is proud to announce three new members who have been appointed to its Board of Trustees – and while they may be new to the Board, their involvement with NSU is well established. Rita Case, James Donnelly, and George Platt, III were appointed and confirmed on Monday, October 12 and will serve for a three-year term.

“These new members are champions for NSU who have long been supportive with their time and resources and will be an excellent addition to our Board of Trustees,” said Charles L. Palmer, NSU Board Chair. “They join a notable group and will continue the board’s prestigious mission by guiding the important decisions that support our students, faculty and staff.”

The new board members and their respective accomplishments include:

Within the numerous awards received, the Rick Case Automotive Group recently collected the highly prestigious Honda President’s Award Elite again in 2019 which recognized their ability to not only sell volume but also to uphold top standards of service.

Ms. Case also contributes to the community on a philanthropic level and is a supporter of the American Heart Association, Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Cleveland Clinic Florida, EASE Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Holy Cross Hospital, Humane Society of Broward County, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Museum of Discovery and Science, Nova Southeastern University, University of Miami Health System, Women in Distress, and many others.

She is a member of NSU’s Fellows Society at the Diamond Shark level. Ms. Case and her late husband Rick Case were also the recipients of NSU’s 2019 Excellence in Community Service Award, which recognizes superior professional engagement activities in the community. The NSU Arena was renamed the “Rick Case Arena” in 2017 to honor the family for their years of commitment to the University. In 2019, Ms. Case was inducted as part of the 30th class of the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame at the Huizenga School of Business & Entrepreneurship, alongside Rob Kornahrens and Arlene Pecora.

Recently NSU and the greater South Florida community lost a champion, Rita’s husband Rick Case. Among the many areas of involvement, Rick was very large presence at NSU. He provided support both financially and with his time serving on several committees as well as the Board of Trustees. NSU is thrilled that Mrs. Case will be continuing their family’s legacy at NSU by agreeing to be a member of the Board of Trustees.

The World of Anna Sui
February 27 – September 19, 2021

This major retrospective exhibition explores the glamorous and eclectic world of one of New York’s most beloved and accomplished designers. Anna Sui has become known for creating fabulous original clothing inspired by intensive research into vintage fashion and popular culture. The exhibition ranges from early looks such as exuberant Carnaby Street schoolgirl outfits worn by supermodels Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell in Sui’s first runway show in 1991, to the cowboy and cheerleaders modeled by Gigi and Bella Hadid during her Spring/Summer 2017 Americana-themed collection. Born in the suburbs of Detroit, Sui joined New York’s cultural underground at an intensely creative time in the 1970s, forming important relationships in the worlds of fashion, photography, art, music and design. The exhibition looks at Sui’s artistic journey through her creative process, collections, interiors, and collaborations. Items on view will also include fashions worn by Sui’s personal style icons who include Anita Pallenberg and Jane Holzer, along with her distinctly graphic textiles as well as those created with prominent partners including Zandra Rhodes and Barbara Hulanicki. The World of Anna Sui is curated by Dennis Nothdruft. The exhibition was originally displayed and organized by the Fashion and Textile Museum, London and was also presented in Shanghai, Tokyo and New York.

The presentation of The World of Anna Sui at NSU Art Museum is generously sponsored by The Douglas A. Hirsch and Holly S. Andersen Family Foundation in honor of Jane B. Holzer. Additional support provided by The David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation.

Eric N. Mack: Lemme walk across the room
March 6 – Fall, 2021

Lemme walk across the room, the large-scale installation by New York-based artist Eric N. Mack (b. 1987) that premiered at the Brooklyn Museum in 2019, is being reimagined for NSU Art Museum’s grand second-floor gallery. Comprised of textile-based works, hung, mounted and draped in conversation with the museum’s architecture, Mack’s installation expands the boundaries of painting, sculpture, and fashion, dynamically reflecting and framing the rich visual experiences of the everyday as it also acknowledges the history of abstract (expressionist) painting.

Eric N. Mack: Lemme walk across the room is organized by NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale based on an exhibition originally presented by the Brooklyn Museum. The Brooklyn Museum presentation was curated by Ashley James, former Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum (currently Associate Curator, Contemporary Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum).

NSU Makes Significant Gains in U.S. News and World Report 2021 College Rankings

For 2021, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has jumped up 19 spots and is now ranked 227 in the United States. This is the second largest increase by a Florida institution of higher learning compared to last year.

“It’s a great day to be a shark,” said NSU President Dr. George Hanbury. “Receiving such recognition shows that NSU is on its way to becoming a preeminent research university that provides its students with a myriad of educational opportunities. We’re equipping students with an edge they can use in their professional and personal lives. But rest assured, our work is not done – it will never be done as we continually strive to be better every day.”

U.S. News & World Report ranks schools according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence, such as graduation and retention rates, assessment of excellence and student selectivity. Scores for each measure are weighted to arrive at a final score.

“Moving up 19 spots in one year is no small feat,” said Don Rudawsky, Ph.D., NSU’s Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness. “These rankings reflect the changes in our admissions standards and support of traditional undergraduate students that began to hit a tipping point in 2014. With our retention rate at nearly 80 percent and rising, it’s clear NSU is providing what today’s students are looking for.”

NSU’s student-faculty ratio is 17:1, and nearly 74% of its classes has fewer than 20 students. The rankings listed the most popular majors at NSU as: Health Professions and Related Programs; Biological and Biomedical Sciences; Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Psychology; and Parks, Recreation, Leisure, and Fitness Studies.

Some of the NSU highlights include:

  • 8% increase in Pell Grant student graduation rates (43% to 51%);
  • Social Mobility rank improved to 113  from 165;
  • Alumni giving up from 2% to 3%;
  • Maintained status as an A+ school for “B” students, and having a high diversity index.
