The Fischler Academy Hosts Inaugural Schooling Sharks Showcase

IMG_2222 (2)

The Schooling Sharks Showcase is the culmination of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), Fischler Academy’s Schooling Sharks Project, in which the first year undergraduate students presented their original lesson plans to a team of panelists, including NSU University School’s Associate Head of Academic Affairs, Dr. Elizabeth Brennan, Head of School at North Broward Preparatory and Fischler College Alumna Elise Ecoff, and Kathleen Howard, Science Teacher at Tropical Elementary.

The Schooling Sharks Project is a co-curricular experiential learning project designed to connect aspiring educators to the art and science of teaching. Through this unique program, students had the opportunity to work closely with teacher mentors, develop positive relationships with fellow Fischler Academy teammates, and share their love of learning with students throughout South Florida.

In addition to partnering with Broward County Public Schools and NSU University School on the Schooling Sharks Project, The Fischler Academy’s students were able to spend additional time in the classroom through field placement. FCE’s special partnership with NSU University School allowed the Fischler Academy students the opportunity to work in an innovative JK-12 environment during their first semester as undergraduates. This partnership would not be possible without NSU’s University School commitment to developing meaningful experiential learning opportunities and the dedication of its faculty and Samantha Nelson, Director of Experiential Learning at the NSU University School.

The winner of the Schooling Sharks Showcase was team “LITerature”, and their teacher advisor was Ms. Elizabeth Scarborough of NSU University School.  The members of the group are as follows: Vanessa Montes Castro, Tianna Harris, Akshitha Balachandar, Giselle Perez, Alexandra Hoffman, Bianca Oliveira. The team created a lesson plan featuring an escape room activity where students would need to unlock various types of figurative language in order to achieve their ultimate goal. The team will travel to San Diego and present their lesson plan at the Sanford Inspire Summit at National University in the Spring of 2019.

NSU AAUW Branch Host “E-STEAM Project for Girls”

Pic 4

On January 16, 2019, the students from the Pace Center for Girls participated in their fourth session in the “E-STEAM Project for Girls”. This was a particularly exciting session as the girls visited the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC) and the NSU Oceanographic Campus. In the morning, they met with Meghan McGlone, MEEC Program Coordinator, who taught the girls about the sea turtle’s nesting behaviors, how to recognize their track patterns in the sand, and how the hatchlings find the ocean. The girls enjoyed a hands-on activity with a large shiny shell from a giant turtle. Winifred Verna, AAUW student chapter vice president, was also in attendance.

Dr. Maureen McDermott (AAUW/FCE) took the girls downstairs to the pool to see a presentation with MEEC’s permanent resident Captain, a green sea turtle who dives with the assistance of weight therapy.  Captain captivated everyone when eating a lettuce lunch, first above the water and then swimming down to eat lettuce leaves anchored in a device on the pool’s floor.

After visiting the MEEC, AAUW member and Halmos College Director of Academic Support and Administration, Melissa Dore, Ed.D., took them around the Oceanographic Campus, where they examined a manatee’s skeleton and toured a lab with non-living coral. After visiting the outdoor coral nursery, they worked inside with MS student Dayna Hunn on sorting her small, but fascinating, crabs. It was a day they will truly never forget!

Sheli Muniz in DFT Crisis Management Class with Dr. Pei-Fen Li

Students in the Department of Family Therapy’s class in Crisis Management in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) were given the assignment of reaching out to local community leaders and exploring how they manage crisis. The class is taught by Pei-Fen Li, Ph.D., faculty in DFT. Third year DMFT doctoral student Nicole Linardi and second year DMFT doctoral student Lauren Padron invited NBC6’s Morning News Anchor Sheli Muniz to address Crisis Management and what that looks like in her line of work—the news. She opening up the conversation on internal and external crises experienced and managed by her and her news team at NBC6. Other related issues such as the advocacy, self-care, and mental health were discussed in managing these crises. The importance of bridging the gap between the stigma of mental health and the public’s need in seeking services was also discussed during this talk. Doctoral student, Rachel Merlin, LMFT, had the opportunity to be interviewed by NBC6’s very own “Man in the Mix”, Brandon Lopez, who bravely discussed his own struggles with anxiety and depression in an effort to shed light on mental illness, reduce stigma, and provide resources for our local community during NBC6’s Mental Health Awareness Week.
