NSU Receives Funding to Address Nursing Shortage

Nova Southeastern University has been awarded more than $3.5 million in funding from the State of Florida ($1.75 million) as well as three healthcare partners ($1.75 million) – HCA/East Florida, Baptist Health/South Florida, and Memorial Healthcare System – to address our state’s critical nursing shortage. NSU will use this funding to provide dozens, if not hundreds, of student scholarships, mentorship opportunities, clinical faculty appointments and equipment upgrades that will continue to put NSU at the forefront of nursing education.

In 2022, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 2524, creating the Linking Industry to Nursing Education (“LINE”) funding program. The LINE Fund was created to incentivize collaboration between nursing education programs and health care partners to combat the growing nursing shortage in the state. The Legislature allocated $19 million for LINE funding and of that amount, $4.6 million was earmarked for private colleges and universities, via a competitive grant process. Nursing programs seeking funding are required to partner with, and obtain funding from, a healthcare provider. The State – through the Florida Department of Education – then matches the healthcare partner funding on a dollar-to-dollar basis.

In October 2022, NSU’s Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing submitted its LINE Program application for $1,762,621. This amount was to match a commitment of funds from private donors:   $500,000 from HCA, $1,062,619 from Baptist, and $200,000 from Memorial Healthcare System. On December 16, 2022, the Department of Education issued Prioritized Funding List, scoring the 26 applications from private colleges and universities that applied for funding. NSU tied for the second-highest score among 26 private colleges and universities and received the third-highest award amount of $3,525,242 as a result of the match.

On February 9, 2023, the Department formally issued its award notification to NSU for the State’s matching funds. The College of Nursing is working diligently to implement its clinical adjunct faculty recruitment measures, purchase and integrate new equipment, and – most importantly – to identify and begin issuing scholarships to eligible NSU students in partnership with HCA, Baptist, and Memorial.

NSU Launches New Off-Campus Housing Website

NSU’s University Housing is providing additional resource options for our students that won’t be able to live on campus, our graduate students who are also navigating the private leasing market, as well as NSU’s faculty and staff. We are excited to launch our brand new off-campus housing website, www.offcampus.nova.edu partnering with Apartments.com. The site will exclusively serve students and staff of NSU. Those with an NSU login will be able to sign up and access the site. Apartments.com will continuously be monitoring the site, reviewing and posting new property listings, and ensuring safety among users. The site is officially live, and we are excited to see the amount of listings grow and develop over the next year. You have the option to search for listings, create a roommate profile of yourself, and search for potential roommates that are affiliated with NSU based on the profile characteristics.

There will also be representatives from many of the properties from this website on campus with more information about their community at the NSU Housing Fair on Tuesday, March 21. The fair will be held in the Spine of the Don’t Taft University Center, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

College of Psychology Receives ASCA Recognition

On February 1, 2023, the College of Psychology’s M.S. in Counseling: School Counseling concentration earned national recognition through the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Specialized Professional Association (SPA) under the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Per ASCA, their school counselor preparation program standards, “are a unified set of principles guiding school counselor preparation programs in training effective future school counselors in areas of professional practice and ethical behavior.”

NSU is the first-ever program to be awarded this national recognition. Attaining this specialty recognition was an essential component of maintaining CAEP accreditation as an advanced program, and it required the School Counseling program to demonstrate that they met each of the ASCA School Counselor Preparation Program Standards. In May 2022, the program was also granted the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accreditation with the Fischler College of Education & School of Criminal Justice.

The School Counseling concentration is one of five options offered as part of the M.S. in Counseling program. The concentration, which consists of 48 credit hours, is offered online. As part of the curriculum, students attend two residential institutes on campus.

More information about the ASCA SPA can be found HERE.

Health Foundation of South Florida Gives NSU $1 Million Grant

The Health Foundation of South Florida recently announced that it is investing $2 million in two regional universities to advance health equity in underserved communities in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Nova Southeastern University and the University of Miami will each receive a $1 million grant to name and launch unique initiatives that will bring together multidisciplinary experts from across their respective institutions and the community to inform the development and implementation of innovative and community-based programs and collect and evaluate data – all aimed at identifying and address the root causes of health inequity across South Florida.

NSU’s Julie A. Jacko, Ph.D., is the Principal Investigator and Project Director for the grant and François Sainfort, Ph.D., is the Co-Principal Investigator.

As part of the investment the universities will forge partnerships and coordinate with regional health systems and community organizations to support the adoption of promising interventions.

The award was made to the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine and specifically, to its Department of Population Health Sciences. The grant will involve NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship and clinical partners including NSU Health, Memorial Healthcare System, as well as value-based primary care provider Cano Health.

“We believe this is groundbreaking for our region, and an important step toward informing, shaping and implementing population health efforts that can ultimately help us achieve health equity,” said Loreen Chant, president and CEO of the Health Foundation of South Florida.

The investment aligns with all three of the Health Foundation’s three focus areas: working at a systems level to improve access to healthcare in uninsured and underserved communities, advance the integration of social needs and clinical care delivery, and foster economic stability and other community conditions that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
