Facilities Management Hosts First Pete Witschen Field Day

Peter “Pete” J. Witschen, former VP of Facilities Management at NSU

The Office of Facilities Management at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) held its inaugural Pete Witschen Field Day to celebrate the life of former university leader Peter J. Witschen.

Otherwise known as “Pete” by his colleagues, Witschen began his career at NSU in 2008 and served as the vice president of Facilities Management from 2012 to 2015. Witschen aided in the construction of notable buildings like the Parker building and Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center. His work at NSU created a legacy, but sadly in 2015, Witschen passed away from a rare type of cancer at the age of 65.

The Pete Witschen Field Day was spearheaded by Daniel J. Alfonso, the current vice president of Facilities Management and staff member Lela Fairchild. Alfonso and Fairchild collaborated on this project by creating an interactive outdoor field day that supported the Pete Witschen Scholarship Fund.

Although the day was meant to be celebrated on June 4, originally Witschen’s birthday, the event was held on Friday, June 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the AutoNation football field.

“It’s been a very stressful year for everybody, especially those who have lost family members and friends due to COVID-19. This is a great opportunity to bring everyone together and celebrate the fact that we’ve gone through this whole year, and we’ve been able to maintain the campus and ensure NSU, as a whole, is running smoothly,” Alfonso said.

The Office of Facilities Management is comprised of 187 staff members and about 70 of those employees participated in the field day event.

“It’s about getting out there and having fun, while at the same time raising money for the Pete Witschen Scholarship Fund,” Fairchild said.

The field day games ranged from a football throwing contest to Jenga and even a candy counting contest. Alongside these games, the Alumni Relations and Annual Giving (University Advancement) team were present to cheer on the spirit and generosity of attendees.

“To me, this is a great opportunity not only to raise funds for scholarships, but to get our employees out of the office and onto the field where they’ve been working for a year without a whole lot of opportunity to talk in-person with each other,” Alfonso said. “We work in facilities, and I tell our folks that we create the environment where research, teaching and learning takes place.”

Alfonso emphasized the importance of camaraderie in his department and how they’re busy planning and preparing for the upcoming fall semester.

The inaugural Pete Witschen Field Day is set to become an annual event for the employees of Facilities Management and will continue to serve as a commemorative day to honor the unit’s beloved former vice president.

Session Will Provide Details on COVID-19 Vaccines and Emerging Variants

Johannes W. Vieweg

During an “Ask the Expert” presentation, Johannes W. Vieweg, M.D., FACS, the dean and chief academic officer for the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, will address the public health value of the COVID-19 vaccines, information on the recovery plan to manage the production, distribution and administration of the FDA approved vaccines, and the new emerging COVID-19 variants. The presentation will be on Wednesday, July 14 at 12:30 p.m.

Public health officials are working to learn more about how easily the new emerging variants can spread, whether they could cause more severe illness, and whether currently authorized vaccines will protect people against them. COVID-19 has exposed a changed world, which requires educating our community in order to help people better navigate the changes.

Help Us Make Fall 2021 Look More Like Fall 2019

If you’ve been vaccinated, click here to voluntarily report your vaccination status to NSU and support our effort to create a better, safer on-campus experience this fall. If we hit our 80% goal of vaccinations for on-campus students at each of our campuses by August 1, we will be able to have more events on campus without the need for face coverings or social distancing.

Reporting your vaccination status is as simple as logging in with your NSU ID and answering a few quick questions.

If you are regularly in contact with students, please encourage them to voluntarily report their vaccination status to help us achieve this goal on time.

Also to note:

  • As announced in an email by the president, BlendFlex will not continue in the fall and all classes will be in-person again. If we don’t reach the 80% goal of on-campus students at each campus reporting they’ve been fully vaccinated, we will be back in the classroom but with safety measures still in place.
  • The 80% goal is not cumulative – each campus must individually have 80% of on-campus students reporting that they’ve been fully vaccinated so that we can end the safety protocols and have no masks.

Do your part and click today to help us make Fall 2021 look more like Fall 2019. As NSU Sharks, we can all work together to make this vision a reality.

The Carter Project on Display Now at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale

In 2016, Miami-based artist Christopher Carter developed an elaborate plan for a highly personal home, studio and exhibition space. The ecologically-sensitive environment would serve as a living laboratory for all his design and artistic projects. During the design and construction, Carter followed the same deliberate process that he would use when creating one of his sculptures. Completed in 2020, this innovative architectural assemblage located in Miami’s North Wynwood neighborhood, is the subject of a new exhibition opening May 15 at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. The Carter Project, on view through January 9, 2022, examines what Carter describes as “the largest, most comprehensive functional structure I ever dreamed to make.” The exhibition is curated by NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater.

Carter rarely uses anything new. Rather, he chooses to use recycled woods, metals, glass, resins and other discarded objects, that when united, challenge traditional concepts in innovative ways, pushing materials and objects out of their intended purpose into new and surprising vernaculars. The result is a consistent and direct design that displays a balance between form and function. The live/work/exhibition space reflects Carter’s connections to Afrofuturism and the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, which embraces imperfections. Its design evokes a Northern California loft ideal whose carbon footprint-reducing structures were constructed with industrial and reclaimed materials, including six used shipping containers that house some living areas and art production studios. “I think of it as an adult treehouse or fort for the different facets of my art practice,” Carter notes.

The multi-use structures and property, which are represented in the exhibition (through videos, photography, drawings and a 3-D printed model), reflect Carter’s ideal use of space. Its multiple locations for introspection, privacy and a sense of solitude, buffer its inhabitants from environmental pollution and serve as a filter to the outside noise and activity. Yet, they do not completely isolate them from the neighborhood surrounding the property, which in the last five years has seen gentrification, mutation and stagnation as well as boundless optimism, positive opportunity and growth.

Bonnie Clearwater noted, “Having worked with other artists who ventured into architecture, such as Frank Stella, Jorge Pardo and Julian Schnabel, I was intrigued by the idea of documenting and exhibiting Christopher Carter’s process in an exhibition since he first shared his vision with me in 2016.  He approached the concepts of structure, environment and sustainability with the creativity and freedom of an artist. We hope that The Carter Project will inspire others to question conventions and imagine new solutions to living in today’s environment.”

Augmented reality features in the exhibition will create enhanced opportunities for visitors to explore The Carter Project’s interior and exterior spaces.

Christopher Carter was born in Albuquerque, NM and was raised in Boston, MA. He currently lives and works in Miami, FL. Infused by a blend of ethnic and urban influences, Carter’s bold and organic sculptures strongly reflect his African American, Native American and European heritage. His assemblages embody power and energy accentuated by the source materials he selects for his creations. Carter has an MFA in Sculpture from the University of California, Berkeley and a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). His work has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions, galleries and art fairs, and is included in private and public collections including the National Museum of African American History and Culture-Smithsonian in Washington, DC. For more information please visit: thecarterproject.miami and christophercarter.art
