Coffee and Conversation at the Alvin Sherman Library

2019-Lit-Live-Beck-Dorey-Stein-Digital-mass

Join us over coffee for a little conversation with award winning author, Beck Dorey-Stein. In 2012, she was just scraping by in DC when a posting on Craigslist landed her, improbably, in the Oval Office as one of Barack Obama’s stenographers. The ultimate DC outsider, she joined the elite team who accompanied the president wherever he went, recorder and mic in hand, eventually traveling to 45 countries around the globe. After leaving her post in 2017, she turned her journal into her first book, From the Corner of the Oval.  Get inspired.  Free and open to the public.  Please RSVP at: lib.nova.edu/Beck.  NSU Alvin Sherman Library 2nd Floor, Cotilla Gallery. This is part of the 2019 Literary Feast Authors Series for the Broward Public Library Foundation.

NSU Fort Myers Campus Holds Ninth Annual Project SEED Event

ProjectSeedEnd

The Nova Southeastern University Fort Myers Campus Physician Assistant (PA) class of 2020 recently planned, organized, and then carried out a very successful Project SEED (Serving Everyone, Embracing Diversity) event. Project SEED is centered on the NSU core values and has become an event for the students, faculty, and staff at the Fort Myers Campus to rally behind. The Fort Myers Campus community overwhelmingly supported this year’s event by generously donating to a clothing drive organized by Project SEED. Forty-five boxes of gently used clothes and shoes were gathered at the campus and then delivered to the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee, FL as a part of Project SEED. This is where the old items from the campus go for resale to support the Early Childhood Education Program, After-School Enrichment Program, and Tutor Corps Program all run by the Guadalupe Center.

This year, the organizers embraced the directive set forth by George L. Hanbury, II, president and CEO, Nova Southeastern University to adopt an Interprofessional Education (IPE) model. The Fort Myers Campus Project SEED students worked together with the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine students at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus to adopt the IPE goal set forth by Hanbury.

The 2019 Fort Myers Campus PA Student Organization continued the best practices of the past, which included gloves and protective glasses donations, blood pressure and glucose testing, nutrition booth, sports equipment donations, children’s activities, dental hygiene, mosquito awareness, HIV screenings, and bike donations. The bike donations have become an important part of the health fair as they are a primary means of transportation for many of the residents of Immokalee.

Another added feature to this year’s event was a computer give-away. Working with the Office of Innovation and Information Technology (OIIT) at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus, 13 old NSU computers were reformatted and then distributed through a raffle to the attendees at Project SEED. What is old to NSU is a new beginning for some of the Immokalee residents.

Black History Month Kicks off in February – Get Ready for African Presence 2019!

Face To Face

NSU’s celebration of Black History Month begins on Friday, February 8 with the opening reception of the 16th Annual African Presence Art Exhibition.  The event begins at 6:30 pm and will be held in the Rick Case Arena at the Don Taft University Center on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus.

This year’s exhibition, “Face to Face: Art through Haitian Eyes,” features Haitian art, on loan from, and curated by the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. The exhibition will be open Feb. 8 through March 3 in the Cotilla Gallery, Alvin Sherman Library.

During the reception, we will highlight the power of service and community as we recognize the works of the Urban League of Broward County. Additionally, we will honor black Greek organizations, including NSU’s undergraduate chapters, for their contributions to the communities they serve.

The evening includes refreshments, giveaways, musical entertainment by NSU’s Riff Tides acapella group, guest performers and more. The reception culminates with the viewing of the exhibition in the gallery.

Space is limited.

CAHSS Invites You to the The Theory of Creativity Art and Design Senior Exhibit

2019 Senior Exhibitition The Theory of Creativity

NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is pleased to invite you to “The Theory of Creativity Art and Design Senior Exhibit,” held February 20-March 6, 2019. Each year, students enrolled in ARTS 4995 Senior Project within the Department of Performing and Visual Arts (DPVA) get to craft their own exhibition. As a group they collectively select a name and theme, design promotion materials, and market it. This exhibition serves as an annual opportunity for graduating students to curate a culmination of their work while at NSU in a gallery setting. This exposes their pieces on a public scale, and allows them to openly discuss their artistic intentions to viewers. The exhibit opens on Feb. 20th 2019 and runs through March 6, 2019, in Gallery 217, located on the 2nd floor on the north end of the Don Taft University Center.

The opening reception is on February 20 from 5:00-7:00pm in Gallery 217. Admission is free and open to the public.

For more information, call 954-262-7620, and please visitwww.cahss.nova.edu/departments/pva.com for all of the upcoming events.
