Students Learn from Virtual Interprofessional Education Event

Rebecca Simon, B.S., a graduate assistant at the NSU clinic for the Department of Speech-Language Pathology, preparing materials for the IPE event.

EXSC 4100 Adapted Physical Activity students from NSU’s Exercise and Sport Science major enjoyed a virtual interprofessional practice education (IPE) event on April 13, 2023.

The speech-language pathology students in SLP 6015, Clinical Processes worked with their instructor Jillian Yaw Ching, M.S., CCC-SLP, and associate professor, Tambi Braun, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, to review a clinical case and different diagnoses that SLPs treat.

The students worked in teams, and they also were able to share how they would create an intervention plan for functional activities for the hypothetical patient. Georgia Monique Mokha, Ph.D., LAT, ATC, CPSS, CSCS, professor, emphasized to all students the value of working as a team for future patients and clients.

Health & Career Fair Connects Students, Community

Nova Southeastern University’s Tampa Bay Regional Campus hosted a FREE Veterans Affairs Health & Career Fair on Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3400 Gulf to Bay Boulevard in Clearwater, Fla. The fair was open to veterans who reside in the Greater Tampa Bay Area to honor their service and commitment to our community.

The event offered veterans and community members, as well as military and non-military students, an opportunity to meet with local organizations who will showcase their employment opportunities and/or services. Several NSU health departments – such as our international dental program, physical therapy, and occupational therapy – were on hand to provide FREE health assessments or general healthcare information. The dental program was able to sign up one of the community members for a dental screening.

The event had more than 2,000 views on social media posts specifically on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook, collectively. Bryan Williams with CareerSource Pinellas had the event posted on its internal portal and an email blast was sent to 10,000 of their contacts who are affiliated with the organization.

All our local military bases were contacted as well. It was a real pleasure to have the MacDill Air Force Base Color Guard here to kick the event off. It was also nice to hear from our community organizations how they were pleased with the event and able to make great connections with our faculty, staff, and students.

“It was also nice to hear our students enjoyed networking with one another in and outside of their programs, learn about the various degrees we offer, as well as make great connections with our local recruiters from the various companies who may be their future employer,” said Michael Abraham, Assistant Director III, with Student Recruitment & Enrollment Management at NSU’s Tampa Bay Regional Campus.

As Earth Day Approaches, NSU’s Sustainability Roots Run Deep

From left, VP of Facilities Daniel Alfonso; Students Joseph Dubner, Caleb Siguenza, Aylen De Simone, and Tatum Hedrick; PPD Ground Supervisor Jeff Heard; President George L. Hanbury II; and Sr. Controls & Energy Engineer Jonathan Miller.

Office of Facilities Management, Physical Plant, Student Sustainability Coordinators (SSC) in collaboration with NSU student Sustainability Clubs are working to increase community awareness and drive sustainability initiatives across campus every day.

This year, the initiatives of these teams have increased the University’s ranking from Bronze to Silver in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Ratings System (STARS) with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (aashe) https://stars.aashe.org/. Marked NSU inaugural designation of Bee Campus USA. Completed projects and research to reduce energy waste in lab spaces and exterior lighting, as well as reduce our domestic water demand by transitioning to greater use of recycled water for irrigation and industrial needs.

NSU established the Community Garden complete with 26 assigned plots of varying sizes, and an open green space to meet, relax, and enjoy. And the year is not yet over.

On April 24, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m., NSU will hold its annual Arbor Day event in the library quad with a tree planting at 1 p.m. to celebrate its sixth year of recognition as a Tree Campus USA. Come out and join us at the event. There will be food trucks, vendors, clubs, games, and Mako Radio.

While Earth Day (Saturday, April 22) happens once a year, for Nova Southeastern University every day is Earth Day. Having a campus wide Arbor Day celebration is a great way to show support for Earth Day and is one more small thing our sustainability teams do to help lead the community with a green thumb.
