NSU Delivers Extra Special Veterans Day Celebration

Nova Southeastern University and the Office of Military Affairs held a special Veterans Day Celebration on Friday, November 11, 2022, on the courtyard fronting the William and Norma Horvitz Administration Building on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus.

The occasion also served as dedication ceremony for the new “Forman Field at the NSU Armed Forces Service Flag Plaza” outside the Horvitz Administration Building. The plaza will be renamed the “U.S. Military Service Plaza at Forman Field,” paying tribute to the family responsible for the land on which NSU now sits.

The Forman family owned a significant plot of land in Broward County for farming decades ago, well before Nova Southeastern University was a vision. During World War II, the U.S. government bought a swath of the land to construct an airfield for military training. When the war was over, the government sold the land back to the Forman family.

The Forman family then used the land to create an “Education Corridor,” which now encompasses NSU, Broward College, and the Florida Atlantic University campuses.  The celebration builds on the connection of the Forman family land, the military base that was once here, and their gift of the land for the education corridor.

The event was held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with Mission Barbecue providing lunch on site and a VIP luncheon and tours held at the Alan B. Levan NSU Broward Center of Innovation on the fifth floor of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library.

NSU, Patel Family Celebrate International Dental Program

Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) College of Dental Medicine on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, thanks to the continued support of Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel, unveiled its expanded International Dental Program at its Tampa Bay Regional Campus.

“Nova Southeastern University’s relationship with Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel continues to grow, with our students and communities being the biggest beneficiaries,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President and CEO. “Expanding and basing our International Dental Program to the Tampa Bay/Clearwater area is just the latest example of that thriving partnership.”

The Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel International Dental Program at NSU Tampa Bay Regional Campus means the university is the only one in Florida with a “stand-alone” program.

To celebrate, NSU held a special dedication celebration has been planned with about 200 attendees, including Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel, NSU President and CEO Dr. George Hanbury as well as special invited guests, including local and statewide elected officials and business and community leaders.

 We’ve all heard stories of people moving to the United States who have advanced degrees but cannot get a job in their chosen profession because they lack degrees/licensing/certifications needed in our country.

NSU’s Dr. Kiran and Pallavi Patel International Dental Program is designed to address that very issue – many of these students are working in the dental field, but just not as dentists (they are working as dental assistants, etc.) This program is specifically designed to help these students obtain the needed degrees and certifications so they can begin practicing dentistry in the U.S.

“Providing a second opportunity for international dental students is something I’ve wanted to do for many, many years” said Dr. Kiran Patel.

NSU’s International Dental Program began in 1997 at its Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus. In the past, NSU, like other colleges and universities, found a spot for international students in their dental program when space became available.

Now, thanks to the financial support from the Patels, this program will be based at NSU’s Tampa Bay Regional Campus and is expanding to provide space for even more students. When fully enrolled, the Drs. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel International Dental Program will provide instruction for more than 100 students.

Hall of Fame Event Honors Regional Business Leaders

On Tuesday night, October 11, 2022, Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship held hits 33rd annual Entrepreneur and Business Hall of Fame event to celebrate the accomplishments of three exceptional leaders: Joe McDonnell, CEO/chairman of Great Innovations LLC; Mario Murgado, president & CEO of Murgado Automotive Group; and William M. Murphy, president of Douglas Management & Realty, Inc.

This year, the event returned to the Rick Case Arena on NSU’s campus for an induction dinner event, co-chaired by past Hall of Fame inductees James Donnelly, founder and CEO of The Castle Group; Keith Koenig, co-founder and CEO of City Furniture; and Alan Levan, chairman of BBX Capital.

Joe McDonnell

For years, Joe McDonnell’s product inventions have not only saved thousands of Americans lives, they have also made many Americans literally – and figuratively – breathe easier. They also have helped many shop safer, and made homes shine and look new again. The founder of Great Innovations, iShopSecure, and For Life Products, this entrepreneur has spent his life creating products, and building brands including carbon monoxide detectors, an online identity authentication platform, and most recently manufacturing and marketing humidifiers, fans, and air purifiers in addition to many other consumer products. McDonnell has taken his many inventions to TV shopping networks, where he began promoting his Rejuvenate® cleaning and restoration product line which he launched in 1999 and remains very popular today at all the major home centers and hardware stores throughout the world.

Mario Murgado

Mario Murgado embodies the American Dream, arriving in the U.S. just short of his 4th birthday in 1966, during the Cuban freedom flights. Raised in Chicago with Midwest values that have served him throughout his life, in 1978 his family moved to Miami where his passion and love of cars guided him to work at Braman Imports. There more than 20 years, Murgado worked his way up from salesman to president and CEO, before starting his own dealership. Today with 41 years’ experience in automotive retailing, Murgado serves as owner, president and CEO of Murgado Automotive Group, one of the most successful auto-dealership groups in South Florida. Murgado generates over $1.2 billion in annual revenues and employs over 730 people in Florida, Illinois, and New Jersey, representing brands including Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bentley, Buick, Cadillac, Ferrari, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Maserati, Mazda and Volkswagen.

William M. Murphy

William M. Murphy built his career in the building industry. A licensed real estate broker in Florida and New York, Murphy is president of Douglas Management & Realty, Inc., a full-service real estate investment company he founded in 1990. Throughout his career in South Florida, Murphy has owned, operated and/or developed in excess of 3 million square feet of office, retail and industrial property, as well as 7,500 multifamily units. His investment and development projects in Fort Lauderdale include the Capital Bank Center, a 200,000 square foot office project; the 550 Building, a 100,000 square foot office project; Executive Court at Jacaranda and Executive Court at Cypress Creek, 90,000 and 60,000 square foot office projects respectively, among other signature South Florida developments.

The event featured a special presentation from past Hall of Fame inductee Armando Codina, executive chairman of Codina Partners, as well as a tribute to H. Wayne Huizenga. NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II and Dean Andrew Rosman also spoke at the event. Presenting sponsors for the 2022 Entrepreneur and Business Hall of Fame Induction were Great Innovations, LLC, and The Bergeron Family of Companies.

NSU Cares Fund Comes to Rescue During Disasters

During Hurricane Ian last month, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) closed its campuses in Tampa Bay, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Jacksonville, and continued to monitor weather conditions.

The NSU Cares initiative processed emergency aid requests following the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, which caused significant damage in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

In preparation for Ian, NSU jumped into action to provide emergency relief aid. We encourage you to donate if you can.

The NSU Cares Fund was established to help students, employees, and alumni in the aftermath of earthquakes, hurricanes, fire, and other unimaginable disasters. It is made possible by donations from alumni, faculty, staff, and community supporters.

NSU Makes Unprecedented Jump in National Rankings

For the first time in NSU’s history, the university has broken into the top one-half of all national, doctoral research universities in the 2023 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

With the ranking agency adding more new schools to the national research university category year after year – this year the total in our category has reached 440 out of the 4,000+ colleges and universities in the U.S.

Event in Orlando Allows NSU to Reconnect with Alumni

Nova Southeastern University recently held an event in Orlando for alumni from NSU’s College of Dental Medicine and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. Alumni from the region, NSU President and CEO Dr. George L. Hanbury II, Dean Elaine M. Wallace from the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Dean Steven I. Kaltman from the College of Dental Medicine attended the event, which was held August 4 at the Interlachen Country Club in Winter Park.

Maintaining connections with those who graduated is vital for a robust and vibrant university. Having pride in where you earned your degree is something NSU works hard to cultivate and nurture. To that end, the university’s Alumni Relations Department schedules events in various parts of Florida and the nation for alumni to meet, network and catch up on old times.

NSU Alum Sponsors Naval Ship USS Fort Lauderdale

The USS Fort Lauderdale, the first Navy ship named for the city

Over the weekend, NSU President George L. Hanbury II attended the commissioning ceremony for the USS Fort Lauderdale, the first Navy ship to be named for the city.

There he met with the ship’s sponsor, Meredith Berger. In addition to being Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations & Environment, Berger is also a Shark alum who earned her JD at NSU.

The nearly 25,000-ton Fort Lauderdale is 684 feet in length. Four diesel engines can power the ship to speeds in excess of 22 knots, and it will homeport at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Va.
The future USS Fort Lauderdale is the 12th San Antonio-class ship, designed to support embarking, transporting, and bringing elements of 650 Marines ashore by landing craft or air-cushion vehicles. A flight deck hangar further enhances the ship’s capabilities, which can support the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

Students Place Third in American College of Healthcare Executives Contest

Our Complex Health Systems graduate students team of Samanta Gomez, Tania Perez and Abby Stout placed third at the 2022 American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) of South Florida Graduate Case competition. This was the first time a team from NSU competed in this event, and what a great result!

Tania, Samanta and Abby did a marvelous job and set a high bar for their fellow students to surpass next year! Professor Timothy Page, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Eleanor Lawrence, Psy.D., provided invaluable mentorship to the students in the CHS program.

Congratulations and thank you for your hard work and dedication!
