Physical Distancing May Be New for Humans,
Not So Much For Whale Sharks

When it comes to physical (social) distancing, humans could learn a thing or two from whale sharks. Seeing one in the ocean is a rare occurrence, indeed, and a big deal – so much so that a recent sighting off the west coast of Florida made several news reports.

For a group of research scientists, “Rio Lady” is one whale shark that shows just how physical distancing works. She was originally ‘tagged’ in 2007 and hadn’t been seen since her tag popped off a few months later. That was until 2011. And she’s since been “re-tagged,” this time with a satellite tag that is showing some remarkable results.

NSU Coronavirus Update: Commencement and Emergency Funding

In the latest update from NSU President Dr. George Hanbury, it was decided that NSU commencement ceremonies would be rescheduled for a later date or, for some professional degree recipients, via remote events. Dr. Hanbury assured the NSU community that degrees would be officially conferred, as usual, based on satisfactory completion of all degree requirements.

Dr. Hanbury also announced that NSU was recently informed that the university would receive $3.5 million intended solely for NSU students who are currently enrolled in the winter term and can document financial hardship due to the pandemic. In addition to government funding, NSU has created a university-based fund, the NSU COVID-19 Student Support Fund, that is being contributed to by alumni faculty, staff, fellow students, NSU donors, and friends.

More information on commencement or on how to apply and qualify for federal or NSU COVID-19 Student Support Fund financial assistance are available in the President’s full memo at nova.edu/coronavirus.

2020 Match Day Celebrations Go Virtual

While the principle of Match Day remains the same, as anxious fourth-year medical students across the country hold sealed envelopes awaiting the verdict of their next medical journey, the NSU Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine class of 2020 did things a bit differently this year.

Due to social distancing precautions Match Day celebrations were canceled, leaving graduate students to host their own remote ceremonies. While it may not have the same feel, social media efforts led by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and the NSU-KPCOM Student Government Association kept everyone in the loop with their interactive Match Day social media campaign.

By using the #MatchDay2020 and #NSUMatch hashtags on their Instagram stories and posts, along with a variety of templates, images of proud students were shared holding their phones, signs, and loved ones as they stated the residency and location they will be going to. Likes and congratulations poured from classmates and students throughout the KPCOM, making the event filled with the same joyful energy—with a twist.

The KPCOM is proud of its D.O. graduates, as 231 expected spring graduates matched with residencies out of 237 for nearly a 98 percent match rate—exceeding the national average. More than 100 graduates will remain in Florida for residencies, with the rest spread out in more than 20 states and the Washington, D.C., area.
