Mako Media Students Are Journalists Awards Finalists

From left, Paulina Riojas, Bryce Johnson, and Santiago Diaz Finochietto.

Sponsored by the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts, NSU’s student-run TV station, Mako TV, was announced as one of two finalists in the TV Magazine section of the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists contest. The Men/Tal Stigma documentary illuminates the issues surrounding men’s mental health through interviews with specialists, students from Nova Southeastern University, and individuals affected by mental illness.

Santiago Diaz Finochietto, Director and Co-executive Producer of the documentary and senior international student at NSU, said that “when the team sat down to discuss the topic of the documentary, we figured that it was best to go for something that affected us all and was close to us, and going for men’s mental health turned out to be a great decision. I think it is time to break those barriers and assumptions imposed on us in the early years of our life.”

Mako TV started to work on this documentary in early December and submitted the final product by mid-January. “Although we had our ups and downs, we really enjoyed the process of making this documentary. We believe we did a great job, and hopefully, we not just win but have more to come,” said Paulina Riojas, Co-executive Producer.

Chris Delboni, Director of Mako Media, said that “I am extremely happy for the team. I think we have a great chance to win this contest, but despite the result, I am excited and grateful for what our students experience.”

On Saturday, April 22, 13 Mako Media staff will travel to Orlando for the awards ceremony at the Rosen Centre Resort.

Students Film Police Recruitment Commercial

A group of criminal justice students from NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice and members of NSU’s Sociodrama Club: Stage for Change, had the opportunity to take part in a unique project: filming a commercial.

The students, along with School of Criminal Justice Associate Professor, Grace Telesco, Ph.D., were asked by Davie Police department to film a recruitment commercial.

Telesco is no stranger to working on short productions, having worked on commercials while serving as an officer with the New York City Police Dept and produced the instructional film “Run, Hide, Fight” detailing what one should do when in a mass shooting situation for the NSU Community.

Telesco enlisted the help of several Sociodrama/Criminal Justice students, including Shannon Hetzel, Laila Horton and Alejandro Suarez, along with her work study students. She also enlisted the efforts of Dan Deien, who also helped with “Run, Hide, Fight.”

The theme of the video is “Live, Work, Play,” and includes beautiful shots of South Florida while demonstrating the day-to-day activities of Davie Police.

”We’re attracting, you know, a particular candidate to come to the police department to live here, where it’s beautiful and there’s so many things to do,” Telesco said.

The students are working in all stages of the creation: pre-production, production, and post-production.

“The writing of the script, the creation of the call sheets, location selection, site surveys – they are responsible for all of that,” Telesco said. “Scheduling all of the cops, scheduling and interfacing with the Davie Police Department, to get all of these cops on the set to do what we want them to do, so that it looks real not staged.”

The work doesn’t stop there. The students have helped in other aspects of the commercial as well, including sound, lighting, flying drones and even acting cameos.

Many are just learning this for the first time. The students all volunteered for the duties and despite the hard work, they are enjoying the process.

“We’ve had a lot of an awful lot of fun, but it’s been an awful lot of work. It’s early hours, get up call is at 8 in the morning, go all the way until 4 with very little breaks and they aren’t getting credit,” Telesco said. “They love working together. They like working with me. We get excited about a lot of stuff so that’s why they’re in it.”

The commercial is expected to be completed in the coming months.

Halmos Faculty Presents at African Studies Conference

Ismael Muvingi, Ph.D., second from right, and other presenters at 2022 African Studies Association

Ismael Muvingi, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS) in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS) presented at the 2022 African Studies Association conference held in Philadelphia.

Muvingi’ s presentation was part of a panel on Urban Africa and the COVID-19 pandemic. His presentation addressed the paradox that global health forums including the World Health Organization predicted that due to poor health infrastructure and limited resources, Africa would suffer catastrophic impacts from COVID-19.

In fact, Africa had the lowest infection and fatality rates from COVID-19 and the scientific world remains mystified as to why. Muvingi’ s presentation was an analysis that attributed the low impacts to the collectivist nature of most African communities and experience dealing with epidemics; factors largely ignored and even contested by the scientific world.

Muvingi is the faculty adviser to the African Working Group. His academic interests include human rights, African politics, and transitional justice with a special focus on Africa.

Dental Medicine Faculty Receives Dental Materials Honor

Sibel Antonson, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.B.A.

Sibel Antonson, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.B.A., was this year’s recipient of the Peyton-Skinner for Innovation in Dental Materials Science Award from the International Association for Dental Research, Dental Materials Group.

This award is dedicated to senior scientists who have made significant contribution to innovation throughout their dedicated life to dental materials.

Antonson was nominated by Dr. Jack Ferracane, Professor and Chair of Department of Restorative Dentistry at Oregon Health and Science University, and the recipient of the Wilmer Sauder Award.

“In 2001, Dr. Sibel Antonson challenged the physics of the centuries old principle of finishing and polishing procedures, and with a unique formula, found a way to eliminate polishing pastes from resin composite clinical procedures,” he said. “She was able to determine the perfect match of abrasive materials for finishing and polishing resin composites in a single step. Since the market introduction of PoGo in 2001, many one-step finishing and polishing products have been developed by other dental manufacturers. However, to date, none of them have matched the performance of PoGo. Since its launch, a large body of independent scientific data from many sources has been generated to validate the consistent and reliably successful performance of PoGo. Even 20 years later, unmatched performance has been shown under various conditions, with different resin composites, and by different operators.

“It is evident that her innovative nature and tremendous work ethic has resulted in a career full of definable achievements that have contributed greatly to the delivery of improved oral health care around the world. She has truly been a pioneer in the field of dental materials, similar to the namesakes of this award.”

Currently, Antonson serves as Assistant Dean for Research and Development at NSU College of Dental Medicine.

WCC Director and HCAS Faculty Co-Author Book Chapter

Kevin Dvorak, Ph.D., and Mario D’Agostino, Ph.D., co-authored “Afterword: Reflecting on Post-COVID Experiential Education and Learning” in Diverse Pedagogical Approaches to Experiential Learning, Volume II: Multidisciplinary Case Studies, Reflections, and Strategies (edited by Karen Lovett). Dvorak is the Executive Director of the NSU Writing and Communication Center (WCC) and a professor in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts (DCMA) in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. D’Agostino is an assistant professor of writing in DCMA.

“Reflecting on Post-COVID Experiential Teaching and Learning” uses the authors’ experiences in the WCC and DCMA classes to explore how teaching practices changed during the pandemic and apply lessons learned to future teaching contexts.

According to Dvorak and D’Agostino (2022), “[n]ow, a year into the pandemic, with an eye on returning to some sense of normalcy, we offer ideas for the future of [experiential learning], based largely on adjustments colleagues have made to their programs and how the global workforce has rapidly evolved in response to the coronavirus.”
