Halmos Faculty Member Honored as Grammy Voting Member

Jessica Muñiz-Collado, M.F.A.

Jessica Muñiz-Collado, M.F.A., faculty in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center, has been accepted as a Grammy voting member for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (The Recording Academy). Muñiz-Collado joins the ranks of other voting members including Aerosmith, John Legend, Lil Nas X, Queen, BTS, and Beyonce. She indicated that she is humbled to receive this honorable recognition from such a prestigious music academy.

Muñiz-Collado is a published and commissioned composer. Her compositions have been reviewed by Percussive Arts Society: Percussive Notes Magazine and have been performed throughout the United States, Canada, Afghanistan and Argentina. Notable performers include members of the Diane Moser Big Band, legendary jazz tubist Howard Johnson, the Callithumpian Consort percussion trio, members of Bang On A Can and Asphalt Orchestra, the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra (Alberta), and the Spokane New Music Ensemble.

In addition, she has worked as a media composer for large-scale media projects, including several Fortune 500 companies and a Super Bowl commercial. Muñiz-Collado composed music for MundoFox’s television series Los Golden Boys (produced by Oscar De La Hoya and Mario Lopez), award-winning COPILOT Music, Killer Tracks Production Music, Odyssey Earth Films, award-winning N.N. Media Productions, Open Door Film Productions, award-winning INC24 iMagination productions, and award-winning director Luis Argueta.

At NSU, she taught courses in composition, music production, and percussion. In addition, she directed the Mako Band, NSU Pep Band, and managed NSU Mako Records. Muñiz-Collado is the NSU’s faculty advisor for Grammy U, which is designed help the next generation of collegiate musicians get connected with music industry professionals.

Law Professor Honored as a 2021 Top Black Educator

Olympia Duhart

Olympia Duhart, a professor in the Shepard Broad College of Law, was recently recognized as one of South Florida’s Top Black Educators of 2021. Duhar is the college’s associate dean for Faculty & Student Development and a full-time faculty member.

Duhart was also recognized by the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) at its biennial conference. Duhart received the ALWD Outstanding Service Award. The award is given to ALWD members who contribute extraordinary national service to the organization. ALWD’s mission is to support the legal writing community as teachers, scholars, and leaders.

Criminal Justice Professor Co-Authors Book on Juvenile Justice

Jennifer Allen, Ph.D., professor at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, coauthored the book, “Juvenile Justice: A Guide to Theory, Policy, and Practice,” Tenth Edition.

The book illustrates the practical realities of the juvenile justice system and the most current topics in the field. Students will learn about the history, process, and theories of the juvenile justice system, and gain access to the latest crime measurements while exploring important issues such as community-based sanctions, treatment and rehabilitation, gangs, and international youth crime.

Allen has been published in the areas of restorative justice, juvenile delinquency and justice, youth programming, police crime, and police administration and ethics. She is also the coauthor of The SAGE Guide to Writing in Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Administration: A Service Quality Approach, The SAGE Guide to Writing in Corrections, The Sage Guide to Writing in Policing, and The Sage Guide to Writing in Criminal Justice Research Methods, and Research Methods and Statistics in Criminal Justice: An Introduction(upcoming).

COM Outlook Wins Two PRSA PRestige Awards

The Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine’s venerable COM Outlook magazine received first-place honors in both the Magazine and Periodicals and the Writing categories at the Public Relations Society of America Tampa Bay PRestige Awards ceremony held November 3. The PRestige Awards recognize outstanding public relations programs and tactics by Florida practitioners and organizations and is open to both PRSA members and nonmembers.

In addition to COM Outlook winning the top award in the Magazine and Periodicals category, the article “Fellowship Fun: Inquisitive Alumna Savors Grey’s Anatomy Stint,” which appeared in the spring 2021 issue, received the top prize in the writing category. The article was written by Scott Colton, B.A., APR, director of medical communications and special projects for NSU’s Office of Printing and Publications.

This is the second year in a row that COM Outlook earned the first-place prize in the PRestige Awards competition.

Ecology Journal Appoints HCAS Faculty to Editorial Board

J. Matthew Hoch, Ph.D.

In October 2021, HCAS environmental faculty member J. Matthew Hoch, Ph.D. was officially added to the editorial board of Oecologia. Hoch is a marine and wetland ecologist and evolutionary biologist. His current work concerns ecological effects of the restoration of the Everglades. In the past he has worked on sex allocation and reproductive dynamics of barnacles, including the functional morphology of their penises. Other projects have included soft-sediment community ecology in salt marshes, the effects of the restoration of Cadmium pollution in Foundry Cove and the dynamics of sex change in slipper snails.

Oecologia is a prestigious, upper-tier journal that publishes innovative research from across the entire field of ecology.  Distributed by Springer, this journal is one of the most highly cited journals in ecology.

Halmos Faculty Appointed to Sustainability/Resiliency Board

Mary Hope Schwoebel

Mary Hope Schwoebel, P.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCRS) in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS), was appointed to the Sustainability and Resiliency Advisory Board in Plantation by Councilmember Horland. This new board was established to advise the Plantation City Council on issues such as climate change.

Schwoebel’s teaching and research interests include peacebuilding and state building, peacebuilding and development, gender and conflict, culture and conflict, and facilitation.

Osteopathic Students Receive Recognition at AOF Honors Gala

Janelle N. Torres

On October 22, 2021, third-year Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine students Aakangsha Jain and Janelle N. Torres received significant recognition at the American Osteopathic Foundation’s Virtual Honors Gala.

Torres was one of five recipients of a $10,000 William G. Anderson, D.O., Minority Scholarship, which honors minority medical students who are working to eliminate health care disparities and to enhance patient-centered care for all. Torres said her background as the first-generation daughter of minority immigrants instilled in her a “commitment to giving back to others through service.” Her KPCOM leadership roles include serving as president of the Pediatrics Club, executive secretary of the Hispanic Osteopathic Medical Student Association, and executive secretary of the Students for a National Health Program club.

Aakangsha Jain

Jain received the Presidential Memorial Leadership Award, which honors osteopathic medical students who are making strides toward becoming top student leaders by motivating people and organizations to move from where they are to where they need to be. Jain’s KPCOM leadership activities include serving as treasurer of the Student Government Association and national liaison officer for the Student Osteopathic Surgical Association. She previously served as president of the KPCOM’s Sigma Sigma Phi chapter, managing the largest community service organization on campus.

Del Rio-Roberts Featured in One Day Digital Magazine

Maribel Del Rio-Roberts, Psy.D.

Maribel Del Rio-Roberts, Psy.D., Associate Professor, Department of Human Services in the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, was featured in an article by One Day Digital Magazine, a publication of Teach for America, on Creating Safe and Supportive Schools for Students.  She was included with other panelists and provided her expertise in supporting the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students with disabilities during the pandemic.

Del Rio-Roberts is a Licensed Florida Psychologist who specializes in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and families. She has also served as a mental health consultant at the Special Olympics of Florida, Miami-Dade County’s Early Head Start/Head Start Programs and for the State of Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) as well as specializes in the diagnosis of learning disorders, autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and developmental evaluations.

Teach For America works toward the day when every child will receive an excellent and equitable education.

Conference Features Health Care Sciences Faculty Member

Jennifer Bergstrom was invited to present at the Annual Cross-Disciplinary Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Conference.

On October 2, 2021, Jennifer Bergstrom, M.S., CCC-SLP, assistant professor and clinical supervisor, in the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences Department of Speech-Language Pathology, was a featured presenter at the Annual Cross-Disciplinary Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Conference in Sao Paulo Brazil, “Journey in AAC Practical Theory”.

October is International AAC Awareness Month, AAC is used by people who cannot rely on their speech to meet their communication needs. SLPs use AAC strategies to assist those having difficulty communicating via speech due to congenital and/or acquired disabilities occurring across the lifespan.

Dean/Professor Emeritus Receives Distance Learning Award

Honggang Yang, Ph.D., dean and professor emeritus from the former NSU College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), was honored by the Florida Distance Learning Association. He received the award for Innovative Leadership in Distance Learning in Higher Education.

Yang designed and implemented the Residential Institute (RI) in 1999, still used by the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS), RI brings distance learning students to campus twice a year to engage in on-campus learning, attend keynote lectures, and participate in working groups and social activities. In addition, he implemented other programs such as the Campus Diversity Dialogues.
