Nova Singers Holds Coral Summer Sing, Aug. 27

Come see what it’s like to sing with us and consider auditioning to become a member of Nova Singers! We will be singing some music planned for our 2019-2020 season. You’ll get a taste of what rehearsal is like and have the chance to meet fellow choristers. Auditions follow at noon. The summer sing will be held from 9:30 a.m. – noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 SE 15th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale.

Nova Singers is Nova Southeastern University’s premier community chorus. Now in their 43rd concert season, the all-volunteer choir includes approximately 140 members—ranging from NSU undergraduate students to senior members of the local community. Nova Singers serves as musical ambassadors for the university as they sing around the country and abroad. The choir’s previous performance destinations include Carnegie Hall and Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Nova Singers’ repertoire ranges from the classics and Broadway hits to modern composers’ original works.

WHAT: Reception, Inauguration, and Installation of NSU’s Sigma XI Chapter (The Scientific Research Honor Society)

WHERE: NSU’s Carl DeSantis Bldg., 3rd Floor Sales Institute, 3300 S. University Drive. Fort Lauderdale

WHEN: 3 p.m. Thursday, September 19

WHY: Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society is more than 125 years old with chapters all over the world. More than 200 Nobel Prize winners have been members. Sigma Xi has a long-standing history of service to the field of science and engineering. The organization is a source of scholarships/grants and conferences, publications and other resources.

NSU submitted a petition to Sigma Xi beginning two years ago and through an extensive review process has been granted the honor of having a Sigma Xi chapter installed. At this installation, we will also be inducting new members. Having the NSU chapter of Sigma Xi puts us among the ranks of more than 500 chapters in North America and around the world. Membership in this International organization has exceeded 100,000 members. NSU is becoming one of these noted chapter members.

Miami Dolphins Training Camp Schedule & Road Closure, Aug. 10

The Miami Dolphins training camp is opening to the public this Thursday, July 25. All visitors attending these practices will be asked to park in the Alvin Sherman Library parking garage.

In addition, a section of Perimeter Road in front of the Miami Dolphins training field will be closed on the:

  • Saturday, August 10 | 9:40 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

The road will be closed to accommodate tents and activities for fans who come to the practice.

Any vehicles heading eastbound toward the closed road will have to turn into the HPD Garage or the CCR circle. There will be traffic staff assisting.  (See attachment for additional clarification.)

NSU Art Museum to Host Creativity Exploration: Going With the Flow, July 13

Learn about the Japanese paper marbling technique called suminagashi, and make your own papers while mindfully “going with the flow.”

Creativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of creative exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler, a specialist in mindfulness education.

Free Health Screenings for Amputees, July 13

NSU’s Physical Therapy department in the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences will be co-hosting a Mobility Fair on Saturday, July 13 from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  This is a free event open to the public providing health screenings to individuals with amputations.  Featured topics include residual limb screening, mobility screening, adaptive equipment, advancements in prosthetic technology, and recreational therapy.  The event will take place in the Health Professions Division Building, 2nd Floor PT & OT Lab.

College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association Recognizes NSU for Academics

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) has named the NSU’s men’s and women’s swimming teams to its Scholar All-America team for the spring 2019 semester.  A record 480 institutions were named on the list.

In addition, the CSCAA has named 1,221 swimmers and divers to the Scholar All-American Team for the 2018-19 season. The award recognizes students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and competed at their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

As a team, the women finished with a 3.54 GPA, the highest GPA posted by the squad in program history, and back-to-back semesters with a 3.50 or higher. The men posted a 3.10, which marks the fifth-consecutive semester above a 3.0 GPA for both teams under head coach Ben Hewitt‘s tutelage.

CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart noted: “Coach Hewitt has built the type of program we want every team to have – one that competes for championships, produces quality graduates.”

A total of 16 NSU swimmers earned the CSCAA Scholar All-America distinction. From the men’s team, five were named to the First Team while on the women’s side, seven earned First Team honors and four earned Honorable Mention honors.
