Learn More About Your Family History at the Alvin Sherman Library 2019 Summer Genealogy

What is your family’s story? Have you ever wondered why you are what you are? Learn the stories of your family history by learning the basics of genealogical research.  Find out what makes your story a part of the American story.

This six week series serves as an introduction to basic genealogy research. Attendees will learn best practices,  how to search sources, and strategies in doing genealogy research. Topics covered include the U.S. Census, vital records, immigration research, military research, and a variety of other resources. We encourage you to sign up for all classes.

NSU Alvin Sherman Library to Host Out of This World Dance Party!

Paint the Universe Art Exhibit Featured at the Alvin Sherman Library

The Gold Coast Watercolor Society is the premier watercolor club in South Florida, and several members have been nationally recognized for their work. The  “Painting the Universe” exhibit coincides with the Alvin Sherman Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories.”The exhibit is FREE and open to the public from Saturday, May 4 – Saturday, July 13, 2019

Circle of Friends Annual Meeting

Join us for “Sherman’s Golf in the Library“– A “HOLE” lot of FUN! – May 18

Join us for some mini-golf fun as the Circle of Friends for the NSU Alvin Sherman Library hosts their annual fundraiser. Something new and different this year, “Sherman’s Golf in the Library” on May 18-19, 2019. All proceeds raised will benefit the NSU Alvin Sherman Library.  The course will feature 18 “customized” holes weaving through the stacks on the first two floors of the Library, themed after favorite children’s books!  Invite your friends, family, neighbors, business associates, etc. to join you for this unique and fun event, and take a shot at a hole-in-one!

  • Kick-off event: Saturday, May 18th at 6 p.m. Cocktails, entertainment, and dinner and a chance auction – win fabulous prizes!! $100 per person (Adults only please!), with a voucher for one person to enjoy a round of mini-golf the next day.
  • Sunday, May 19: 10 am – 4:30 pm, Open to the public – golfers of all ages, for a unique Mini Golf experience! Admission is just $5 per person.

Alvin Sherman Library to Host the 27th Semi-Annual Book Sale

The Alvin Sherman Library will host its 27th Semi-Annual Book Sale, Wednesday, April 10 – Saturday, April 13. The presale is open April 10 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. for NSU faculty, staff and Circle of Friends members only.

The book sale offers a wide assortment of gently used hardcover and paperback titles (fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, children’s books, and specialty) as well as some non-print materials (CDs, DVDs, blu-rays, video games, audiobooks, etc.). Most items will be $3 or less and a great way to add to your own personal collection while supporting the “Donald E. Riggs Library Education Assistance Fund.” Cash and checks only, please. No scanners allowed on presale day.

NSU Libraries Celebrate National Library Week: UC Takeover

Join the NSU Libraries as we celebrate National Library Week during our annual UC Takeover! Visit the Don Taft University Center spine on Thursday, April 11, between noon and 1:00 p.m. to play games, enjoy popcorn and candy, and win prizes!

At each table, you’ll have the chance to interact with library staff to learn about this year’s theme “Libraries = Strong Communities” as we showcase all of the free resources that you can access. Hamilton Programs at the Alvin Sherman Library

Enjoy a four FREE programs about Alexander Hamilton being conducted in conjunction with the Alexander Hamilton: Immigrant, Patriot, Visionary Exhibit.  The Exhibit features a collection of books, newspapers, art and acts of Congress that tell the Hamilton’s story as well as a traveling exhibition from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Alexander Hamilton’s Legacy – Sunday, March 17 | 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Adam Levinson, Esq. explores Hamilton’s extraordinary legal legacy, including Hamilton’s reports to Congress as the nation’s first Secretary of Treasury.

Isaiah Thomas: Revolutionary War Patriot and Publisher – Sunday, March 24 | 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

David Wells Roth, an American figurative painter, was commissioned by the Union Oyster House in Boston, to paint a series on Isaiah Thomas’s activities in Boston relating to the developments of the American

Revolutionary War. He’ll talk about Isaiah Thomas and his work.

Alexander Hamilton: The Man vs. The Musical – Sunday, April 14 | 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rand Scholet, compares and ranks Hamilton’s contributions with seven other Founding Fathers. The speaker has a number of photos and personal anecdotes from his five-year relationship with the musical and its

creative genius, Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as Hamilton author Ron Chernow that inspired the musical.” And singing may be heard…

The Power of Today’s Glass Lecture at the Alvin Sherman Library

Circle of Friends of the NSU Alvin Sherman Library invites you to The Power of Glass, a lecture on art glass by Davira S. Taragin. Writer, author, lecturer and curator Ms. Taragin is one of the country’s foremost experts on art glass. The event is in honor of Joan and Milton Baxt.  Mrs. Baxt was a lover of art glass who also served on the Board of the Circle of Friends and was a strong supporter of the library through her time and philanthropy.

Join us as we celebrate her life and the beautiful art glass which she generously donated to the library for all to enjoy. Reception generously sponsored by The Division of  Advancement and Community Relations and its free and open to the public.
