Acclaimed Writer Comes to Performing Arts Center Nov. 16

Lauren Groff, who has been called one of the generation’s “finest living writers” by The New York Times, will take the stage at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, to share her experiences, inspirations, and creative process that have contributed to her remarkable and award-winning writing career.

Attendees will be captivated by Groff’s reflections on the craft of writing and discussion on what influences and informs her best-selling works. “The Vaster Wilds,” Groff’s latest novel, has been praised by the Los Angeles Times for “reinventing the adventure novel” and promises to be a tense and riveting tale of survival.

Attendees can look forward to an engaging discussion about the book and the processes that inform her mastery of the historical fiction genre. This event will be moderated by former WPLG Local 10 news anchor Laurie Jennings.

Author, Conservationist, Adventurer to Hold Talk at NSU, Oct. 27

NSU Alvin Sherman Library is excited to welcome South African conservationist, surfer, businessman, author, filmmaker, and three-time Guinness World Record holder Chris Bertish. Bertish will be talking about his book “All In! The Atlantic Standup Paddle Crossing -93 Days Alone at Sea” on Friday, Oct. 27. The talk details his historic 2017 accomplishment of being the first individual to Stand Up Paddle (SUP) across the Atlantic Ocean, an arduous solo trip that spanned from Morocco, Africa to Antigua in the Caribbean. Bertish will also recall his experiences at sea which include but are not limited to, being hunted by a great white shark, being towed by a giant squid, and capsizing multiple times. Attendees will be equal parts enthralled by Bertish’s harrowing journey, and uplifted by his positive attitude which shows that one can accomplish anything that they put their mind to.

In addition to the Author talk with Chris Bertish, this event will feature a Q&A Session, and copies of All In! will be available for purchase.

Levan Center Called ‘Theme Park for Global Entrepreneurs’

Alan B. Levan I NSU Broward Center of Innovation and John Wenzveen, the center’s executive director, were recently featured in Global Miami, a monthly print and digital publication designed to serve as an information resource and hub for Miami’s booming international business community. The center was characterized as “A Theme Park for Global Entrepreneurs.” Global Miami is a leading source of intelligence about the people, companies, trends, and opportunities as a trade nexus for the Americas and beyond.

Alvin Sherman Library Presents ‘A Day for Children,’ Oct. 21

Nova Southeastern University is pleased to announce the return of the annual health literacy fair, “A Day For Children” on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event showcases free and low-cost health and wellness services for children from birth to 16 years of age. Health care education and activities for vision, medical, speech, behavior, and dental health as well as physical and occupational therapy will be provided through NSU Health Centers.

H.E.L.P Event to Help Veterans with Homeownership, Oct. 15

The Alvin Sherman Library and NSU Military Affairs Veterans Resource Center would like to invite you to a day of learning from VAREP (Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals) for the Homeownership Education & Literacy Program (H.E.L.P) on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023.  This full day workshop will detail the home buying process, VA Loans, payment assistance programs ,and much more.

Completing the H.E.L.P. course could result in up to an $80,000 down payment assistance grant and discounted bank fees in Broward County.

Powerful Film Documents Lynching of Rubin Stacy, Oct. 3

This documentary film, directed and produced by Tenile Brown, looks at history through the eyes of Anne Naves, the niece of Rubin Stacy. Anne recounts the events that led up to the lynching of Rubin Stacy.  There is power in this story.  There is an even greater power in telling untold family stories. There is a release for the kindred who are connected by blood and the community that holds space for them.
The Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center has a unique partnership with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners to provide access to its resources not just for NSU students, faculty, and staff but to anyone living, working, or going to school in Broward County.  As a university library and cultural center, the library has something for everyone.

Library Opens Door to Financial Literacy to Boys and Girls Clubs

Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library invited the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County to visit the library on Wednesday, July 12.

The “Fun and Financial Literacy” event featured a tour of the library, lunch in the gallery, and a book reading by NSU alum Franklin Renwick Jr. from his book “The Adventures of Fly’mingoo Banking.”

The boys and girls all received gift bags with a copy of Renwick’s book, which focuses on financial literacy for youth.

Beaches, Creatures, and Cowboys: June 18-Aug. 20

Movie producers have been making films in Florida almost since the dawn of the industry. For a short time in the early twentieth century, Florida even rivaled California as a place for movie making.

Explore the posters and lobby cards in this exhibit called “Beaches, Creatures, and Cowboys,” which depicts some of Florida’s most famous films from the early 1920s to the present. Embark on a captivating journey through time, capturing the magic and allure of movie production in Florida. Whether you are a film enthusiast, a history buff, of simply seeking an escape into the realm of cinematic wonders, this exhibit shares stories and splendor of Florida’s film industry and celebrates the rich legacy it has left behind.
