NSU Receives Funding for Early Detection of Breast, Other Cancers

The university has received $963,000 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to help detect genetic differences among women that may make some more vulnerable to cancers and other diseases.

“I am thrilled to announce these federal dollars headed to Nova Southeastern University for the purchase of cutting-edge instruments that will be used for the early detection of cancers and other diseases,” said breast cancer survivor U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who presented the check to NSU.

Disparities in health outcomes based on ancestry are well-established and, for most of today’s major diseases, show people of African ancestry suffer worse outcomes. African American women have a 41 percent higher breast cancer death rate than white women, even though their incidence of breast cancer is four percent lower. Other cancers and major diseases show the same trend.

“These funds will support critical research to help us recognize and understand genetic differences and enable doctors to intervene sooner with treatments,” said Dr. Harry K. Moon, president-elect, executive vice president, and chief operating officer of NSU.

Dr. Michelle Clark, dean of NSU’s Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy, noted NSU is well-positioned for this research, as South Florida is a community with a rich blend of people representing multiple cultures, countries, and socioeconomic groups.

“Through genetic and other analysis, NSU scientists will explore how differences among people at the cellular level may contribute to their likelihood to develop cancer and other diseases,” she said. “Understanding our differences will lead to better diagnoses as well as better treatment options and outcomes.”

Get Ready for Flu Season at On-Campus Pharmacy

NSU makes it easy to get vaccinated with our on-campus NSU Health Pharmacy in the Sanford L. Ziff Health Care Center (University Drive and SW 30th Street). Appointments are recommended (call 954-262-4550), but walk-ins are welcomed. The pharmacy staff can address any concerns or questions about the flu and COVID-19 vaccines, fill prescriptions, provide medication counseling, and schedule other vaccines. At the full-service pharmacy, you can also purchase over-the-counter medications and supplies.

“The seasonal flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over six months of age,” said Goar Alvarez, Pharm.D., C.Ph., FASCP, assistant dean of Pharmacy Services at the Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy.

The flu vaccine and COVID-19 vaccine and boosters have been formulated to protect you against this year’s anticipated viruses and variants. To save time, you can get flu and COVID vaccines during the same pharmacy visit.

Many health insurance plans cover the annual flu shot as preventive care. The same is true for COVID shots. Most NSU employees receive a 10% discount for on-campus pharmacy services when they present their Shark Card ID. NSU Health works with many health insurance plans. Check with your insurance carrier for coverage specifics.

“We offer a traditional community pharmacy with a ‘white glove touch,’” Alvarez said. “We’re focused on taking care of our faculty and staff.”

The Office of Human Resources is collaborating with the NSU Pharmacy and ICUBA to provide free seasonal flu shots to all faculty and staff enrolled in an ICUBA medical plan.

NSU Receives Approval by Top University Accrediting Body

Nova Southeastern University received notification from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) that our Fifth-Year Interim Report has been successfully accepted with no additional reporting requested.

SACSCOC is the body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. It serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices primarily among the diverse institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and certain other international sites approved by the SACSCOC Board of Trustees that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

The Commission also accepts applications for membership from domestic institutions in the other 39 states, as well as international institutions of higher education around the world.

College of Pharmacy Named for Barry, Judy Silverman

On Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, Nova Southeastern University renamed its College of Pharmacy the Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy.

NSU Board of Trustees Vice Chair and Chair of the NSU Health Professions Division Board of Governors Dr. Barry Silverman and his wife made a transformational gift to the university, with the goal of enhancing the growth and continued impact of NSU’s pharmacy program not only in Fort Lauderdale but also at our Palm Beach and San Juan, Puerto Rico campuses.

A crowd of more than 300 turned out for the unveiling of the college sign, including Pharmacy Dean Dr. Michelle Clark; President and CEO Dr. George L. Hanbury; and President-elect, Executive Vice President and COO Dr. Harry K. Moon; the NSU Board of Trustees, and a host of NSU faculty, staff, students and administrators.

“The Silvermans’ gift will aid the college tremendously in providing a world-class education to students, allowing them to achieve the NSU edge,” Dean Clark said.

FY2025 PRG and QOL Grant Cycles Now Open

The FY 2025 President’s Research Grant (PRG), formerly the Presidents Faculty Research Development Grant (PFRDG), and Quality of Life (QOL) grant cycles are now open! This year the application process will take place on Cayuse Sponsored Projects, NSU’s new grant management system. Applications are due via Cayuse no later than January 22, 2024, 5:00 p.m.. More information, as well as application instructions, can be found on the PRG and QOL websites, linked below. Through these programs, eligible faculty may apply for internal grants of up to $15,000 in support of a variety of research and scholarly activities. PRG and QOL are tremendous opportunities to obtain support for research and scholarship at NSU, and to build faculty research capacity that can be leveraged toward external funding pursuits.

Pharmacy Professor Keynote Speaker at Aging Well Summit

Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Benedict C. Albensi, Ph.D., has been chosen to be the keynote speaker at the upcoming 4th Annual Aging Well Summit. The event, dubbed
“Healthy Brains, Healthy Caregiving,” will be held November 11-12 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Madison, WI.
Professor Albensi, with NSU’s College of Pharmacy, will speak on “Are We Missing the Boat with Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Care.”

NSU Makes Strong Showing at SENDCon Regional Meeting

NSU Davie and Tampa campuses were well represented at the recent SENDCon meeting in Atlanta, Ga., with two of our colleges in attendance – Pharmacy and Psychology/Neuroscience.

SENDCon, which stands for the Southeastern Neurodegenerative Disease Conference, is a new regional meeting whose parent organization is the Alzheimer’s Association USA:  https://www.alz.org/sendcon/overview.asp. Last year (2022) the meeting was supposed to take place in Bonita Springs, but a hurricane canceled it. There were about 200 people in attendance in-person and another 200 or so who attended virtually at the 2023 meeting. There were several posters presented by NSU.

NSU Health Veterans Care Receives $5 million from the State

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, Florida state Sen. Alexis Calatayud came to the Alan B. Levan l NSU Broward Center of Innovation and presented a check for $5 million from the State of Florida to Nova Southeastern University’s NSU Health Veterans Care.

On hand to receive the check were Dr. Leonard Pounds, NSU’s Vice President of Clinical Operations; NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II; and Dr. Harry K. Moon, NSU’s COO, Executive Vice President, and President-Elect.

Interprofessional Education, Simulation to Open Gateway to Future of Health Care at NSU

For years, NSU has been raising the bar on health care in South Florida through interprofessional education and simulation. Our philosophy and practice have focused on training future professionals to interact with patients and collaborate as members of health care teams before practicing in real-life health care environments.

To enhance and expand our current world-class health care facilities, NSU Health is seizing the opportunity to put them under one roof at the future site of a brand new, standalone Interprofessional Simulation Complex, or SimCom.

This facility – spearheaded by EVP and COO Dr. Harry Moon and NSU Health – will serve as the cornerstone of NSU’s health care footprint on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus, strategically located near the health care colleges, NSU Health’s clinics, the Center for Collaborative Research, and the HCA University Hospital. The facility’s infrastructure will be used by students on campus as well as all regional campuses virtually. Slated to open in 2025, SimCom will be supported by NSU Health’s new Interprofessional Simulation Institute – led by Executive Director Dawn Wawersik. The Institute – which already oversees the administration and operations of simulation activities for the university.

These cutting-edge endeavors will culminate in a uniquely beneficial asset to NSU students, educators, and researchers across all our regional campuses, as well as the health care community and industry at large. The much smaller former Dolphins training facility building, previously considered to house SimCom, will be repurposed to address much-needed office and classroom space on campus.
