Fischler Professor Speaks on Wellness in our New Normal

Maribel Del Rio-Roberts, Psy.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Human Services at NSU’s Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, recently presented on wellness during Covid-19 through the Psychology Department at the Universidad Andina de Cusco in Peru on Friday, May 15.

Additionally, Del Rio-Roberts will be on a panel of wellness experts speaking to women in technology for the AnitaB.org South Florida Chapter on May 29, at 11:30 a.m.

Education Alum Appointed President of Morris Brown College

Kevin James, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice (FCE&SCJ), has been unanimously appointed the 19th President of Morris Brown College by its board of trustees. At age 42, he is one of the youngest college presidents in the country. He has served as interim President since March 1, 2019.

Over the past fourteen months, Morris Brown College has made tremendous progress under his leadership with accreditation, governance, rebranding of the institution, partnerships, and fiscal stability.

James is a native of Columbia, South Carolina. He has resided in Atlanta, Georgia since 2015, where he was the Interim CEO of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. James has over 20 years of experience in higher education as a senior level administrator, with positions at Strayer University and Herzing University as dean of academic affairs as well as a senior dissertation advisor at Grand Canyon University

James earned his Doctorate of Higher Education with FCE&SCJ in 2009.

 

Education Alum Authors Horror Novel

Brian Rick, graduate of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice authored the horror novel, “I Am Martin.”

Brian wrote his first novel at age 12 and drew more than 120 comic books throughout his teen years. At 14, while dealing with the typical teenage angst that afflicted so many of his generation, Brian created a character, an antihero named Martin. Additionally, he is the author of “Leaving Home,” a Science-Fiction short story set in the not too distant future. He later shared the story with the Vice-President of the United States. In 2016, while living close to numerous current and former Marines, Brian published “Some of Dad’s Stories,” a 43-chapter anthology about his father’s experiences in war and peace. “Some of Dad’s Stories” is now available at Barnes&Noble.Com.

He attributes his father as being the greatest influence in his life as well as his former Imaginative Writing professor and best-selling author, James Lee Burke. Brian also considers Stephen King, Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) and Michael Crichton to be his mentors.

Brian earned an M.S. from the Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice  in 1999. He and his wife, Angel, live in Lakeland, FL with their two dogs: Brandy and Sam.

Education Professor to Host Zoominar on Blended Instruction

Michael Simonson, Ph.D., Professor, at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice will host a short “zoominar” titled, Blending In – Returning to the Classroom by Mini-Blending your Class, via zoom on Wednesday, May 27 12:00 p.m. EST.

This session will explain one of the most popular ways to blend a course, known as MINI-flipping or MINI-blending, which involves identifying single concepts — the building blocks of course content — and recording that content for remote delivery. Face-to-face sessions, whether with the entire class enrollment or in a divided class, is then reserved for discussions and explanations–approaches that work when social distancing is required.

Simonson is a professor in the Instructional Technology and Distance Education program. He has authored four major textbooks dealing with distance education, instructional technology, instructional computing, and instructional media. His two most recent books received first place book awards from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.  He is also the founding editor of the Quarterly Review of Distance Education, Distance Learning Journal, and Proceedings of Papers presented at the Annual Conventions of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.

Education Alumna Receives City of Coral Springs MLK Monument Award

Bessie Cristwell, Th.D., graduate of NSU’s Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, received the Coral Springs Martin Luther King Jr. Monument Award earlier this year.

She was honored for many achievements, among them, her decades of work in assisting underprivileged children, helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships for youth struggling to pay for college and trade school, and helping create a day of learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cristwell has served on Coral Springs’ Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee for the past 25 years.

She is a retired school administrator and teacher and worked for four schools before being employed with the Broward School district office, specializing in multi-cultural education. She made sure children took learning about cultures and diversity seriously.

She earned her Educational Specialist Degree with the Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal justice in 1979 and a Theology/Psychology Th.D. from Brewer Christian College and Graduate School in 2005.

Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice Sends Hope and Positivity to its Students and Alumni

The faculty and staff at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice (FCE&SCJ) created two videos with messages of hope and positivity for their students and alumni. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice Receives Grant from National University System Sanford Programs

On April 21, 2020, Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Abraham S. Fischler College of Education & School of Criminal Justice (FCE&SCJ) extended its partnership with the National University System Sanford Programs for academic year 2020-2021 by receiving a grant of $141,500.

Established at the National University System, Sanford Programs are made possible through a generous gift from philanthropist and businessman Thomas Denny Sanford. NSU is part of a nationwide initiative that is introducing research-based PreK-12 initiatives (Sanford Harmony and Sanford Inspire, as applicable) in conjunction with schools and districts in the state of Florida. The content is based on the most current and accepted educational theory, so the focus is on practical implementation to develop skills in children who engage better in school and relationships in the long run.

With this grant, the new Sanford Inspire On-Demand Module curriculum will be embedded into the NSU’s Fischler Academy program.

Education Student Selected as a Fulbright Scholar

 

Re’Nyqua Farrington, student at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar.

Re’Nyqua started at NSU in 2016, majoring in Secondary English Education with a minor in Spanish, setting her sights on becoming a bilingual speaker and career educator. While studying at NSU, Re’Nyqua tapped into diverse educational opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. She has worked closely with the Farquhar Honors College as an Honors Advocate and Peer Coordinator, served twice as Peer Leader for the First Year Experience course,  worked as a Peer Writing Consultant and Fellow at NSU’s Writing Center, and volunteered as a reviewer for NSU’s literary journal Digressions.

Last winter, she studied abroad in Spain and learned about the opportunity to serve as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in the Fulbright program. After learning about the program, which perfectly merged her interests in education and Spanish, Re’Nyqua applied and received the news she was selected as a recipient of this honor in April. She is expected to begin her program in Honduras in January 2021.

Re’Nyqua was also a 2019 recipient of the U.S. Dept. of State Gilman Scholarship, as well as the 2016 Gates Millennium Scholarship.

Education Alumna Recipient of the 2020 Texas Association of School Business Officials Rise Award

Julie J. Guillory, Ed.D, has been honored as a recipient of the 2020 Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) Rise Award. The Rise Award is given to members who have participated in TASBO for 10-years or less and are becoming recognized leaders both at their district, community and within TASBO.

Guillory has served in education for 34 years. She joined the Fort Bend Independent School District in 2016 and is currently the Director of Student Attendance/PEIMS (State Reporting). She oversees the attendance for over 80,000 students spread across 81 campuses.

She was honored on March 5, during the 2020 TASBO Awards Luncheon at the 2020 TASBO Annual Conference hosted by the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.

She earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice in 2005. When she is not serving her district and the great State of Texas, Dr. Guillory is extremely busy in her church community as a faithful servant, state leader and volunteer.

Education Alum Named Superintendent of Bangs Independent School District

Joshua Martin, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice has been named the new superintendent for the Bangs Independent School District (Texas).

Dr. Martin has been a Texas educator for 18 years. In that time, he has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and Special Programs director. Recently, he was Chief Academic Officer at Farmersville Independent School District, in Farmersville, Texas. In each of these roles, he has been driven to work towards finding and cultivating the best within his students by mentoring teachers and campus administrators to provide the best learning environments possible.

Dr. Martin’s projected start date is April 16. He earned his Doctor of Education in 2011 with FCE&SCJ.
