Fischler College of Education Raises More than 3k for the Broward Heart Walk

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education, School of Criminal Justice team, One Beat One Sound, raised more than $3,000 for this year’s Broward Heart Walk.

FCE Team Co-Captains, Mona Lee Hutton and Tanisha Robinson, hosted a variety of events over the past month to raise funds. The events included dollars for dress down days, purchasing hearts to be hung in the halls, a raffle, and FCE’s Heart’s Behind Bars, where the faculty and staff paid to have administrators and supervisors “locked up.” “Bail” was raised by the detainees asking for bail money from fellow colleagues, family and friends. Additionally, FCE’s Puerto Rico team hosted and participated in a variety of events, including a Zumbathon to raise funds for the Broward Heart Walk.

Fischler College of Education Graduate Named Oconee Fall Line Technical College’s Vice President of Student Affairs

Saketha Adams, Ed.D.,  graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education, School of Criminal Justice (FCE) was named Oconee Fall Line Technical College’s (OFTC) Vice President of Student Affairs. Adams has served as the Dean in Student Affairs since 2016. Prior to that position, she led the adult education division for many years. During her tenure in adult education, she was selected as a state finalist for the Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year.

Adams earned her doctorate degree in educational leadership from FCE in 2013. Additionally, she is pursuing another Ed.D. program focusing on student retention under the direction of  Lisa Carbone, Ed.D,  at the Fischler College of Education.  Adams has a master’s degree in school guidance and counseling from Fort Valley State University and a bachelor’s degree in management from Savannah State University.

Fischler College of Education Hosts “What it Means to a be Shark” Tour for 5th Graders from Dillard Elementary

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education, School of Criminal Justice hosted 80 fifth graders from Dillard Elementary on Monday, March 18th for “What it Means to be a Shark” Tour.

The morning kicked off with a presentation from NSU’s Undergraduate Admissions Office, where the students learned about the different programs of study, as well as the various opportunities and amenities available to each NSU college student. Additionally, the students heard from two Admissions Ambassadors, who shared their personal NSU experience and why they are proud to be an NSU Shark.

The fun continued with a game of Shark Trivia, followed by a quick stop at the library and the Don Taft University. Yet, the highlight of the campus tour was a trip to the Leo Goodwin Senior Residence Hall, where the students were able to visit a dorm room and hear about living on NSU’s campus.  Many students were impressed with how close the university is to their homes and are looking forward to coming to college here one day. The day culminated with a pizza lunch and a surprise visit from Razor.

Education Graduate to Open a K-8 School

Kisha Bellande-Francis, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE) is currently involved in the process of opening a K-8 school, Legacy Academy of Innovation, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The school is slated to open in 2021, and will be a non-profit institution that will offer students with socioeconomic challenges an education beyond the traditional grade-based methods. The school’s goal is to provide disadvantaged children opportunities that will enrich their educational experience, thus leading them to higher levels of success.

Legacy Academy of Innovation will use a competency-based education framework. Competency-based education meets students where they are academically, provides opportunities for choice, and awards students credit for evidence of learning, not time spent studying a subject.

Bellande-Francis, Ed.D., earned her doctorate degree with FCE in 2018. Presently, she is an instructional specialist who develops the best instructional practices in 12 districts across 7 states.

NSU’s College of Education Hosted Alumni Event in Dominican Republic

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE) hosted an alumni event on Saturday, February 16 at the Santo Domingo Sheraton Hotel with over 230 alumni and guests in attendance.

Guests enjoyed a buffet dinner, entertainment provided by a Dominican folkloric dance company, and a singing ensemble from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), the first university in the Americas, founded in 1538. Featured guest speakers at the event included FCE alumna, Dr. Zoraima Cuello, Vice Minister of the Presidency, and current FCE doctoral student, Mr. Jose Alejandro Aybar, President of the Dominican Republic University Presidents Council.

FCE Hosts Child Protection Conference

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), School of Criminal Justice hosted The Child Protection Conference: Building Resilience in Changing Times on Friday, February 22nd. The college welcomed attendees from various areas including, Child Protection Services, Law Enforcement and School Counselors to NSU’s Don Taft university Center Performance Theater for an informative and insightful day featuring an array of experts.

Ronald Book, Chairman of the Lauren’s Kids Foundation, served as the keynote speaker, and was introduced by his daughter, Senator Lauren Book. Additionally, the conference featured a special presentation from Assistant Professor Grace Telesco, Ph.D., and NSU’s sociodrama club. Other speakers included Co-Commander of the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children, Sgt. Thomas McInerney, and Tony Sparks, a retired military patriot and co-founder of the nonprofit, Phantom Rescue.

Fischler College of Education Hosts Take Your Child to Work Day

The Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), and the School of Criminal Justice, hosted a day of fun filled activities on Friday, February 2, as part of the annual “Take Your Child to Work” day.

In the morning, the children received a special talk on drones from FCE Professor, Michael Simonson, Ph.D. and visited the Alvin Sherman Library for its program, Build It! Make It! Play It!. After lunch, the children participated in a “Turtle Talk” from NSU’s Marine Environmental Education Center and a received visit from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Van, where children had the opportunity to learn about fingerprinting and gathering crucial evidence after a crime happens.

Each child in attendance was awarded a certificate in celebration of this special day.

 

Fischler College of Education (FCE) Graduate Publishes Journal Article

Ellen Driber HassallDr. Ellen Driber-Hassall, Ed.D., graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE) has recently published an article with her business partner in the Journal of Aging and Social Change, V9, 11, 2018, Identification of Older Adult Barriers to Activity. The article discusses how the researchers began to identify older adult barriers to activity. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, they were able to expand the knowledge of and awareness concerning barriers to activity older adults may face in the course of their daily lives. The research may be of value to those working with this population, decision makers, and older adults themselves.

Ellen completed a 20 year career as an administrator in higher education.  She and her business partner have created and presented numerous national and international seminars on gerontological topics. Additionally she served in the Air Force for 13 years as an aircraft maintenance officer.

NSU Alumni Spotlight: Fischler College of Education (FCE) Alum Recognized as Star Superintendent of the Year

Jeff Eakins

Jeff Eakins, graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), was recognized by the by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations as the 2018 Star Superintendent of the Year.

Jeff received the award for his exemplary leadership and was amongst many nominees for championing community and business involvement in education through his local education foundation. He was nominated by the Hillsborough Education Foundation.

Jeff earned his Master’s in Educational Leadership with FCE in 1995.

The Fischler Academy Hosts Inaugural Schooling Sharks Showcase

The Schooling Sharks Showcase is the culmination of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), Fischler Academy’s Schooling Sharks Project, in which the first year undergraduate students presented their original lesson plans to a team of panelists, including NSU University School’s Associate Head of Academic Affairs, Dr. Elizabeth Brennan, Head of School at North Broward Preparatory and Fischler College Alumna Elise Ecoff, and Kathleen Howard, Science Teacher at Tropical Elementary.

The Schooling Sharks Project is a co-curricular experiential learning project designed to connect aspiring educators to the art and science of teaching. Through this unique program, students had the opportunity to work closely with teacher mentors, develop positive relationships with fellow Fischler Academy teammates, and share their love of learning with students throughout South Florida.

In addition to partnering with Broward County Public Schools and NSU University School on the Schooling Sharks Project, The Fischler Academy’s students were able to spend additional time in the classroom through field placement. FCE’s special partnership with NSU University School allowed the Fischler Academy students the opportunity to work in an innovative JK-12 environment during their first semester as undergraduates. This partnership would not be possible without NSU’s University School commitment to developing meaningful experiential learning opportunities and the dedication of its faculty and Samantha Nelson, Director of Experiential Learning at the NSU University School.

The winner of the Schooling Sharks Showcase was team “LITerature”, and their teacher advisor was Ms. Elizabeth Scarborough of NSU University School.  The members of the group are as follows: Vanessa Montes Castro, Tianna Harris, Akshitha Balachandar, Giselle Perez, Alexandra Hoffman, Bianca Oliveira. The team created a lesson plan featuring an escape room activity where students would need to unlock various types of figurative language in order to achieve their ultimate goal. The team will travel to San Diego and present their lesson plan at the Sanford Inspire Summit at National University in the Spring of 2019.
