Graphic Design USA Magazine named two Art + Design majors in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts “2022 Students to Watch” in its February issue. Victoria Kuzmicki and Tristen Trivett both have concentrations in graphic design and were spotlighted by the national publication’s annual feature showcasing rising stars from top design programs in the country.

“Tristen and Tori are exemplary designers determined to use their creative skills to address social disparities and prompt thoughtful responses,” said Miriam Ahmed, Ph.D., assistant professor of graphic design for the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts in the Halmos College. “They both deserve this industry-wide recognition.”

In 2021, NSU Art + Design majors Vivian Duran and Sol Santecchia were also named GDUSA “Students to Watch” and NSU was named a 2021 GDUSA Top Graphic Design School.

Pen to Purpose: Cultivating Writing as a Brand of Professionalism, April 11

Join us on Monday, April 11th, at 6:30 p.m., in-person at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library’s Cotilla Gallery on the 2nd Floor, or online via Zoom for this semester’s final discussion in the Pen to Purpose series.  This author series, founded by Professor Efrat Friedman, is the result of a collaboration between the NSU Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts and the Alvin Sherman Library, and is sponsored by the Circle of Friends. You will not want to miss this compelling conversation with Malcolm Mitchell.

Mitchell was the former wide receiver for the New England Patriots, and the rookie who helped the Patriots win Super Bowl LI. For years Mitchell’s life revolved around his athletic pursuits and he devoted little attention to books or writing. The focus, however, changed while recovering from knee surgeries when Mitchell made time to pursue higher literacy levels and joined a book club. He eventually created the “Share the Magic Foundation” to promote literacy to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and “Read with Malcolm,” which introduces book ownership to students, and works to improve literacy in schools.

Mitchell is also the author of the children’s books, The Magician’s Hat and My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World which encourage a positive association with literacy and the idea that books promote growth and opportunity.

NSU Library’s Circle of Friends is the community support arm for Alvin Sherman Library. The funds raised are used to enhance the library’s services, materials, and programs. With more Friends, we can make an even greater impact, so why not consider becoming a member? For more information about Circle of Friends, please call 954-262-4593, email libdev@nova.edu or visit http://sherman.library.nova.edu/cof.   To become a member or renew, please click here.

Graduate Assistant Coordinator Partners with Story Booth

Bianca Oliveira

Bianca Oliveira, NSU Writing and Communication Center Graduate Assistant Coordinator (GAC) and M.A. student in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts’ Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media program, partnered with NSU’s Department of Humanities and Politics’ (DHP) community series, Story Booth, in collecting stories from the student body and community during Banned Books Week of the Fall 2020 semester, September 28 – October 2, and 2021 Carnival season, February 16 – March 16.

As the former undergraduate English major ambassador of DHP, Oliveira worked with Aileen Miyuki Farrar, Ph.D., DHP Associate Professor and Associate Chair, to encourage students to tell their stories. Fall 2020’s installation of Story Booth, “Ban Me,” asked participants to consider the constraints and liberties of censorship. Responses were posted to the Story Booth website, accessible here. Oliveira’s contribution was featured in the 18th volume of Digressions, NSU’s literary and arts journal. The Winter 2021 “Carnival” Story Booth asked students about the carnivalesque. Participants joined a Zoom recording booth to speak about their experiences with Carnival; Oliveira spoke on the history and cultural impact of Brazil’s Carnival. You can access all students’ stories here. Other Story Booth themes have included “Book to Film Adaptations,” “Two-Minute Memoirs,” “A Collaborative Truth,” and “Haunted Histories,” and “Friendship.”

The Story Booth series fosters community at NSU through literature and language, asking questions that prompt participants to create their own stories. Each Story Booth story helps connect the NSU community across the disciplines and cultures by sharing unique experiences of the authors. When asked how Story Booth relates to her work at the WCC, Oliveira asserts that “we need to question how we interact with others. When students visit the WCC, consultants are assigned roles larger than 45-minute tutors. Being cognizant of this can allow us to holistically assist those who seek our help.”

To learn more about Story Booth, you can visit their website at https://nsudhp.wixsite.com/storybooth.
