NSU Unveils Interprofessional Simulation Complex

NSU President George L. Hanbury II speaks to the media during the groundbreaking of NSU Health’s Interprofessional Simulation Complex.

On Tuesday, November 29, 2022, Nova Southeastern University unveiled NSU Health’s Interprofessional Simulation Complex on the site of the Miami Dolphins former football training facility. The special groundbreaking ceremony was attended by more than 100 NSU stakeholders, key officials, students, and supporters.

Dr. Harry K. Moon, NSU’s Executive Vice President and COO, speaks to reporters.

Speakers at the event were NSU President George L. Hanbury II; Dr. Harry K. Moon, NSU’s Executive Vice President and COO; Terry J. Mularkey, NSU’s Vice President of Advancement and Chief of Staff; and Charles Palmer, NSU’s Board Chair and President and CEO of North American Company LLC in Fort Lauderdale.

At NSU Health SimCom, the combination of teamwork and technology will augment the educational experience, enrich clinical training, and accelerate medical innovations. The $56 million, 107,000-square-foot interprofessional complex will be used by NSU students, community groups, health care corporations, and practicing physicians for advanced training exercises, research, equipment demonstrations, and surgical scenarios.

From the mid-1990s until the summer of 2021, the Miami Dolphins NFL franchise honed their skills for the gridiron on Nova Southeastern University’s Davie campus in what was then a state-of-art football training facility. It seems only fitting that with the Dolphins’ relocation to a new facility adjoining their stadium that their former digs would continue its legacy in training: This time in the form of educating dynamic health care leaders.

NSU Health’s Interprofessional Simulation Complex will provide cutting-edge technology and advanced training for students across all health care disciplines. Open 24/7, this facility will help train people in multiple fields, including health care, law, technology and business.

“There’s not another one like it in the state of Florida,” said NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, adding that the center should open in spring 2024.

The NSU Health SimCom will offer more than 105 simulation spaces, including:

  • 3-D modeling/animation
  • Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality
  • Holograms
  • 16 human and fresh tissue stations
  • Operating rooms
  • Team-scenario venues
  • Inpatient skills labs
  • Outpatient exam rooms

College Hosts Site for Health Professions Regional Summit

ASAHP participants in collaborative working groups.

The NSU College of Health Care Sciences under the direction of Elizabeth Swann, Ph.D., ATC, FNAP, on June 3, 2022, hosted one of three sites for the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) Regional Summit.

From left, Elizabeth Swann, Ph.D., ATC, FNAP, executive director of the Center for Interprofessional Education and Practice, and Kristian Poitier, M.H.S.M., M.B.A, R.N., B.S.N., assistant vice president of the Academic Engagement and Strategies HCA East Florida Division.

This was an unprecedented engagement and collaboration between academic institutions and healthcare organizations joining together to create actions that will yield better health outcomes for patients. HCA Healthcare was our industry partner that provided discussion and feedback during the Summit.

Using the ASAHP Clinical Education Task Force recommendations as a foundation, more than 100 participants at the three locations engaged in intentional conversation about issues within the healthcare systems and what actions can be taken to make things better. Approximately 2/3 of summit participants came from ASAHP member academic institutions and 1/3 came from regional clinical partner organizations.

Throughout the day, each hub brainstormed on actionable ways to bring the patient voice more to the forefront and improve overall health outcomes. Ideas included– finding common ground and language to create a culture of collaboration, finding creative touchpoints for clinical rotations and mentoring, increasing student input, combining resources to increase productivity, and maintaining strong personal connections with patients and families despite expanded use of technology. The summit culminated in a virtual “Harvest Session”, where the three hubs shared their local dialogue on a national level.

Anthony Breitbach, Ph.D., ATC, FASAHP, FNAP, chair of ASAHP’s Interprofessional Task Force at Saint Louis University said, “By bringing healthcare practitioners into the conversation with academic institutions, we are able to have a measurable impact on the training for health care workers of the future.” After this successful event the college of Health Care Sciences is already working toward hosting the summit in 2023.

NSU’s New Department Specializes in Orofacial Pain

Good news! Nova Southeastern University now offers help to those suffering from temporomandibular disorders (TMDs).

Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine has opened a new Department of Orofacial Pain with Dr. Harold Menchel, DMD, as clinical director and Dr. Divya Kohli, BDS, MDS, as program director. The department is accredited by the American Dental Association.

NSU is the only university in Florida and one of two in the southeastern United States with an orofacial pain center.

At the practice at NSU, patients will be evaluated for temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), headaches, related neck pains, and neuropathic pains, and will be managed in an interdisciplinary setting with coordination of referring dentists and physicians.

According to the National Institutes of Health, TMDs are a group of more than 30 conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement.

There are three main classes of TMDs:

Disorders of the joints, including disc disorders.

Disorders of the muscles used for chewing (masticatory muscles).

Headaches associated with a TMD.
