NSU University School Students Visit and Explore NSU’s Office of Student Media

NSU University School 1st grade students got a hands-on look at NSU’s student-run media operations when they took an on-campus field trip to NSU’s Office of Student Media as a part of their unit on community. The students learned more about the entire NSU Shark community and how Student Media plays an important role in the educational and cultural life of students at NSU. The Lower School students had the opportunity to visit the Sharks United Television studio, Radio X, and The Current where they interacted with and learned from NSU students about hosting a radio show, creating a newspaper (and reading one), and producing a television show. The USchool students also visited the Alvin Sherman Library where they participated in a storytelling session and located their own library books.

NSU University School Students Conduct Bacterial Analysis

NSU University School’s Microbiology/Forensic Science Advanced Topics (AT) class allows students to learn complex and unique skills, strategies, and techniques throughout the school year.  Upper School students taking the class have been hard at work learning the intricate process of staining bacteria by placing bacterial smears on slides to stain, observe, and examine the different types of bacteria under the microscope. This is one of the many procedures they will learn this year including collecting and examining data, ballistics, and fingerprint and hair fiber analysis. NSU University School is one of the few schools in the state of Florida that offers this unique, hands-on course to students in grades 9-12.

NSU University School Students Get Creative with Innovative Challenges

NSU University School 4th grade students have already had the opportunity to participate in a number of innovative challenges this new school year. They have been programming cubelets to rock/wobble, creating their own worlds through an app on the iPad, coding spheros to complete various tasks, using strawbees to build complicated structures, and even getting creative and problem solving with legos. We look forward to watching their critical thinking skills improve as they continue to work with the 4th grade and Innovation Lab teams throughout the school year.

NSU University School Students Kick Off a New School Year

It’s the start of a new school year for NSU University School’s Sharks! Students in junior kindergarten through 12th grade have headed back to school for the 2019-20 school year.

Students kicked off the school year by participating in team-building and getting-to-know you activities while connecting with teachers, staff, and friends. Our New2U organization and school buddies helped welcome our new USchool students and helped them feel like part of our family.

NSU University School parents were also excited about the new school year and joined our University Family Organization (UFO) after drop off at a Back-to-School Coffee. Parents had the opportunity to reminisce with other USchool parents and talk about all the exciting events and activities planned for the upcoming year — one that is sure to be filled with innovative classroom lessons, engaging student activities, and lasting friendships.
