NSU University School Students Travel to China

NSU University School students, who take Chinese as a foreign language, had the opportunity to travel to China over spring break. USchool faculty accompanied the 23 Middle and Upper School students on the trip where they were all fully immersed into China’s culture and customs. Students explored China’s major cities and landmarks including the Great Wall of China. They also had the opportunity to interact with Chinese students at our sister school and they ate and cooked traditional Chinese food like dim sum. Travel opportunities like these encourage students to gain awareness of global perspectives and develop the interpersonal skills necessary to navigate new experiences with confidence, maturity, and flexibility.

NSU University School Writing and Communication Fellows Take Exclusive Tour of WPLG Local 10 News

NSU University Upper School students who were selected to be a part of our NSU Department of Writing & Communication (DWC) Fellowship Program recently had the opportunity to go on an exclusive tour of the WPLG Local 10 news station.

Jennings and Lang walked the DWC Fellows through the 24-hour day in the life of a journalist, showcasing the complexity of the news station. Our Fellows, who have demonstrated interest in the fields of journalism, broadcasting, and communications, were able to witness the organization, production, and delivery of news in action and left the station inspired and in awe of the talent and skill they observed.

NSU University School Students Enter First-Ever Nationwide NPR Student Podcast Challenge

NSU University School fifth grade students in Mr. Gingrich’s class had the opportunity to record original podcasts that could end up airing on National Public Radio (NPR). Students recorded their podcasts for the NPR Student Podcast Challenge at UStudio — our new TV and film studio in the AutoNation Center for the Arts. Students discussed social issues that were sparked throughout their civil rights unit for the chance to win the grand prize of having an NPR journalist visit our school and having those winning podcasts featured in segments on NPR’s “All Things Considered” or “Morning Edition” programs.

The competition challenged students and teachers from all over the country to produce podcasts that tell compelling stories, teach something important, and reveal the voice of a community. We are so proud of this group of students and wish them the best of luck as expert judges evaluate their work for information, structure, personality, and creativity. NPR will announce the winners at the end of April.

NSU University School Fourth Grade Students Pitch Their Own Business Ideas in Shark Tank Junior

NSU University School fourth grade students learned about the value of entrepreneurship during the Shark Tank Junior event. Students came up with innovative business ideas and pitched them to potential “investors” in front of an attentive audience. Students presented goals for their businesses, commercials, channels of distribution, advertising plans, and costs vs. profits.

“Key Mic” won 1st place for their efficient and kid-friendly keyboard design that has a built-in microphone to appeal to gamers. The team utilized the resources in our Innovation Lab to construct the functioning prototype. Students also had the opportunity to hear from real-life entrepreneurs. We thank the NSU University School parents who volunteered their time to provide feedback and inspire our students.

Following this event, our seniors concluded their month-long entrepreneurial program at a school-wide trade fair where they displayed their unique products and services. All event attendees received three chips to give to the companies they would most likely invest in after hearing their sales pitch.

NSU University School Students Receive a Visit From the Davie Police Department Mounted Unit and the Humane Society of Broward County

NSU University School third grade students recently received a special visit from The Davie Police Department mounted officers and horses and a K-9 therapy dog and handler. The visit was part of their “Animals as Heroes” thematic unit to help enrich their understanding of how animals help our community. Students had the chance to interact with the animals, learn about their responsibilities, training, how they help the community, and how they are cared for.

Students also had the opportunity to meet a representative from the Humane Society of Broward County who brought a therapy dog to school to educate the students about the importance of therapy dogs, the Humane Society of Broward County Animal Assisted Therapy Program, and the Humane Society’s mission, which is to provide shelter, aid, and responsible adoptions to animals in their care and to educate the community about respect and kindness to animals.

We thank the Davie Police Department and the Humane Society of Broward County for these meaningful experiences for our students.

award1

NSU University School sophomore Duncan Jurman and Upper School Science Teacher Chana Goodman were recognized for their work with our school’s butterfly vivarium by being presented with the Broward County Government NatureScape Emerald Award for excellence and best environmental practices in a school garden. This award recognizes businesses, municipalities, schools, government facilities, and homeowners that have created and maintained model Florida-friendly landscapes or completed exceptional projects.

The butterfly garden and vivarium are located just outside of the Middle School but all NSU University School students in grades junior kindergarten through 12th grade have the opportunity to interact with the butterflies as part of their curriculum.

The NatureScape award was recently presented at the annual Water Matters Day event, the county’s signature water conservation event where residents learn about local and regional water resources, how water is managed, and how Broward’s water managers are planning to meet our future water needs.

Congratulations on this special recognition!
