USchool Students Showcase Law Fellowship Experience

Upper School students in our Law Fellowship recently participated in a culminating experience where they argued a hypothetical case before the Supreme Court, showcasing the skills and knowledge they acquired throughout this collaborative program with the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law. Congratulations to Reagan Lowe who delivered the winning argument and runner-up Rayna Silver!

Over the past several months, USchool students worked closely with mentors from NSU law’s Moot Court Society and law Professor Heather Baxter who helped them learn the ins and outs of the court system, how to write persuasively, how to craft legal arguments for a brief, and how to prepare for and perform oral arguments.

University School Students Participate In Code Sharks

HPCC Systems presented an inaugural event called Code Sharks that introduced Middle and Upper School students in our Computer Science internship and robotics programs to the HPCC Systems Big Data platform and the supporting Big Data Language, ECL (Enterprise Control Language). Students were introduced to three public music datasets, and a series of challenge questions were posed for each one. In a seven-hour workshop session, students split into teams and answered as many questions as possible using ECL.

Teams were mentored by LexisNexis Risk Solutions staff and undergraduate students from the NSU College of Computing and Engineering. At the end, teams submitted their work to the judges, and trophies were awarded with prizes to the top three teams.

Congratulations to the winning teams!

University School Fourth-Graders Showcase Business Ideas

As part of their entrepreneurship unit, fourth-grade students showcased their creativity and entrepreneurial skills by developing an innovative product along with a business plan, marketing strategies, and a commercial. Students recently pitched their products and business ideas, in Shark Tank style, to teachers, classmates, and judges who selected the winning product.

This year’s fourth grade Shark Tank Jr. is Pet+ Paste founded by student entrepreneurs Nina and Kinley. To help pet owners save on vet costs, Nina and Kinley created Pet+ Paste, an emergency paste pet owners can have readily available that will save their pet’s life in case they eat/lick a poisonous toad or get into harmful chemicals.

During this year’s event, third- through fifth-grade students who were in attendance had the opportunity to hear from our keynote speaker Steve Greenberg, award-winning author, reporter, TV personality, game show host, and expert on innovation, new products, and technology.

We are incredibly proud of all our fourth-grade students for their creativity, teamwork, and hard work in developing their products and business skills.

Congratulations, Sharks!

University School Students Work on Innovation Challenges

First grade students have been working on various innovation challenges to prepare for Engineer It!, an annual engineering design competition for students in grades 1-12. As part of their innovation studies, students designed an egg drop container, built a bottle rocket, and used aluminum foil to make a boat that can float holding as many pennies as possible.

After finalizing their prototypes, students took their learning outdoors to put their designs to the test and enjoyed seeing all their hard work come to fruition.

University School Students Visit NSU’s Neuroscience Lab

Students in our Psychology Internship visited Nova Southeastern University‘s Neuroscience Laboratory in the Center for Collaborative Research where they dissected a sheep brain. Led by NSU neuroscience faculty member Dr. James Muñoz, students learned how remarkably similar the anatomy of a sheep brain is to the human brain.

Using their knowledge gained in our AP psychology course, students were able to identify brain structures and functions in real time during the dissection. Students also learned about Dr. Muñoz’s exciting research on gene therapy and neural stem cells and their potential applications to cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

USchool Students Celebrate Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, students across various grade levels celebrated Black History Month through a range of insightful activities. Below are just a few of the activities that took place:

  • In the Upper School, students had the opportunity to hear from several influential guests, including Marquise Francis, senior national reporter and producer for Yahoo News, and RaShauna Hamilton, Miami Dolphins senior director of community relations and youth programs, who shared their career journey and expertise. The Black Student Alliance hosted an event to unify the school and celebrate Black music and culture.
  • Both Middle and Upper School students visited the Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight exhibit in the Alvin Sherman Library at NSU where they connected the stories of African American achievements, overcoming adversity, and challenges to their classroom discussions.
  • Middle School students researched different Black figures and designed infographics highlighting each individual’s impact. QR codes were also displayed in the hallway to introduce students to Black biographies and music.
  • In the Lower School, students made posters highlighting impactful, historical Black figures as part of an interactive Black History Month display, learned about African culture, observed artifacts, and enjoyed a performance by Positivity Africa, an African fusion band.
